The story of Lyle Odelein III - Pt.1 - scarecrow noises
#1

With the new regression role out, I have realized that my player, Lyle Odelein III has been playing in the league for quite a while now. Drafted by the one and only St. Louis Scarecrows in S47, Lyle has been playing in the SMJHL/SHL for 16 seasons, 3 in the juniors and 13 in the big leagues. Now to get this out of the way, Lyle Odelein III is not retiring. He still has some game left in him and wants to get moving forward with this young team that has been built in New Orleans. He feels that he needs to do this, because when he first joined the New Orleans Specters, he had so many veterans on the team that help him along the way and together they won a Challenge Cup in S53. Lyle wants to do the same thing for his team mates now. He knows that he has lost a step or two and will continue to do so, but as long as he can still contribute, he wants to keep going.

The latest group of Specters in New Orleans are poised to be hitting their stride in the very near future and Lyle can not wait to see them all reach their full potential. But that is what is coming up, this media piece isn’t about what is to come, but what has already happened.

Part 1 - The early years

Way back in S47, Lyle was drafted to the St.Louis Scarecrows, a team that had just won their 3rd Four Star Cup in a row and were poised to make another run that very season.  Lyle was selected in the 2nd round by the Crows and found himself on the third pairing in St. Louis, learning from some of the best in the game. The Scarecrows were the best team in the regular season that first season for Lyle, but they couldn’t make it back to the finals, losing to the eventually champions in the semifinals. Would be the closest he would make it to raising the Four Star Cup in St. Louis.  That was disappointing for the young defender, but he did not let that hold him down. He learned as much as he could in the SMJHL and readied himself for the big leagues.

Speaking of the big leagues, Lyle was selected 8th overall in the S48 SHL entry draft by the New Orleans Specters. The Specters traded up to select Lyle, something that surprised the soon to be rookie, and in turn, made him devoted to this team for the rest of his life.  He said many a times that he would do everything in his power to make sure that they never regretted taking a chance on him and that he would be the best player and teammate that he could be. And he is still doing that till this day.

Now to take a closer look at the 3 seasons Lyle spent in St. Louis. As previously mentioned, that first season for Lyle saw the Crows lead the SMJHL with a record of 33-14-3. Nicolas Flemming was the Crows top scorer that season with 46 points (23 goals and 23 assists) followed closely behind Michael Fox and Nicolaj Muller, two players that Lyle would play again with in New Orleans. Personally, Lyle had an ok rookie season, recording 2 goals and 5 assists while averaging 6.27 minutes per game.  He also had  25 hits and 22 blocks, but the most interesting stat is his 15.38% shooting percentage, 2 goals of 7 shots doesn’t sound so bad!

With a bye in the first round, Lyle got his first taste of the St.Louis Scarecrow / Detroit Falcons rivalry in the 2nd round.  His first playoffs saw the two teams face off and the scarecrow noises were just too much for the Falcons, they lost to the Crows in 6 games. Next up was the Anaheim Outlaws, this was a hard fought series, going all the way to seven games, but they fell a bit short, losing that game seven 3-2.  Lyle finished those playoffs with 2 assists, 7 hits and 1 blocked shot. Anaheim went on to beat the Montreal Milita in the Four Star Cup finals.

S48, Lyle’s draft season, saw the Crows once again lead the league during the regular season. They had another 69 point season, recording the exact same record as the previous season, 33-14-3. This season saw Lyle take a massive step forward in his game. In 50 games, Lyle had 9 goals and 24 assists.  He made 87 hits and blocked 64 shots while averaging 21.54 minutes per game. He was also named an alternate captain for the Crows, along with his fellow 2nd year teammate Mika Kandinsky and their captain Nicolaj Muller.  Muller and Kandinsky dominated the league that season with 61 and 59 points respectively, finishing 1 and 2 in the scoring race.  Lyle himself finished in the top ten of defensemen scoring, hits, blocks and PIMs.

The playoffs saw the Crows having another first round bye and then a 2nd round match up with the 8th seed, Halifax Raiders. They started the series out well with a 4-1 victory, but game two saw the Raiders win in overtime and then they continued to win the next 3 games all by a one goal margin. Lyle has gone on record saying that these losses were some of the hardest in his career.  In those 5 games, Lyle had one goal and one assist, 8 hits and 10 blocked shots.  The Vancouver Whalers went of the win the Four Star Cup that season.

S49 was Lyle’s last season in St. Louis and the SMJHL. The Crows had dominated the regular season in Lyle’s first season, his third, not so much. St. Louis finished the regular season with 24 wins, 22 losses and 4 overtime losses, for 52 points. Lyle had a solid season leading the Scarecrows blueline, with 4 goals and 29 assists. He had 25 hits and 65 blocked shots, and averaged 22.27 minutes per game. Muller and Kandinsky were at the top of the Crows scoring, along with Barrett Blackwood.  The Crows dressed 10 rookies this season, with notables like Aron Hernadivic and Sasha Dangelchek.

With Lyle playing in his first 1st round playoff matchup, his oppenents were the Anaheim Outlaws, who gave Lyle his first taste of playoff defeat in his rookie season.  It was a back and forth series, and the Crows were on the brink of elimination in game 6, until the 2nd overtime period in which fellow blueliner, Noah Brusky scored the game winner. Set up for another game seven against Anaheim, the Crows came out on the right side this time, winning 4-3 and Lyle was a big part of that. Setting up 2 goals and receiving the 3rd star of the night.

The 2nd round matchup for the St.Louis Scarecrows were the Kelowna Knights.  St. Louis took the first and third game of the series, but the Knights took the next three and beat out the Scarecrows in 6 games ending Lyle Odelein III’s SMJHL career.  Lyle’s playoff numbers were 1 goal and 6 assists, 8 hits and 18 blocks in those 13 games. The Kelowna Knights went on to the Four Star Cup finals, but came up short against the Montreal Militia.

Lyle had hoped to bring a Four Star Cup home to St. Louis, but that just wasn’t in the cards.  He finished his career a Crow with a whole lot of great memories and friends who helped pave the way for Lyle’s SHL career.
Lyle’s regular season stats as a member of the St. Louis Scarecrow can be seen below:

Well, there you have it, a look back on Lyle Odelein III’s start as a professional hockey player. His three seasons in the SMJHL were a blast and his only regret is not being able to help win another Four Star Cup.  But his stint as a Crow brought him where he is today and he couldn’t have done it without his team mates and GM’s.  Special shout out goes to @Nictox, for being a great help and friend. Who knew that when he messaged a yet undrafted rookie “do you know what team has just three peated that could use a good active defenseman?”, that they would be together for the long haul. Thanks for everything Nic!

This concludes part 1 of the story of Lyle Odelein III stay tuned for the next installment as I take another stroll down memory lane and try to get my back account to a reasonable number!

One of the guys I really leaned on being around back when I joined NOLA, when some familiar faces left the team. You’ve become loved in NOLA and obviously made some good friends across sim leagues, I’m glad you can look back on your career (or the start of it in this article) with joy.

To the remaining seasons, friend.  Specters
