Important note: I might have been a few margaritas in on this thought process, but the idea still stuck the next morning. Also, as always, I will be wordy as I need the money. Charles Dickens was not actually paid by the word, but we are.

Over the last sixteen months as I have spent time with the glorious SHL, I have thought long and deep about ways it might be improved. With the whole regression decision, I mulled over a way to improve the whole character creation process. When I first built Zebulon Leavitt, I noticed the Player Build Tool looked a lot like any of the multitude of RPGs I have played over the decades. Hell, some of the attributes like Strength, Agility, and Speed can be found in many of those games

At its heart, the SHL is an RPG. No, not a Ruchnoy Protivotankoviy Granatomyot, rather a Role Playing Game. It is an idle RPG; you build a character, a few other users make some manipulations to you and a bunch of other characters, and then FHM gets to play Dungeon Master. And often roll a 1 for you on that breakaway. You know, the one that would have tied the game.

Early RPG games only had attributes. Later games expanded on this by adding different traits that gave advantages or disadvantages to. The Fallout games come to mind, they had traits that would give you something good and in turn something bad. For example, you could get a trait called “Sex Appeal” that “You've got the "right" stuff. Members of the opposite sex are attracted to you, but those of the same sex tend to become quite jealous.”

I am not making that up.

So why not add this idea to the SHL? Everybody often has similar players with similar attributes, what if there was something you could add to make them a little different? Something to give you a little boost but also knock you down a peg.

Folks, I give you the latest SHL feature idea:

Perks and Consequences.

I would have used Traits, but:

Bethesda, current owner of the Fallout license, often sues for trademark infringement.
I get paid by the word so “Perks and Consequences” pays triple what “Traits” would pay.

You, the reader: “Stop wasting my time with extra words and show me examples, you magnificent son of a bitch!!”

Live Fast
You gain TPE 10% faster than normal. You regress two seasons earlier than normal.

Roid Rage
You gain Strength and Speed 20% faster than normal. You start with 10 aggression, and gain 1 point in aggression every season. You cannot stay on a single team for more than 3 seasons.

Karlsson Syndrome
Your offensive stats above 16 cost 15% less. None of your defensive stats can go above 16, except for Defensive Read which cannot go above 13.

I’m a Goalie for a Reason
You earn TPE 10% faster for your first six seasons. Your puck handling and passing skills cannot go above 7.

Brave Idiot
You start with a 10 in Screening and Blocked Shots. Your Stamina costs 5 TPE extra per point over 15.

Johnny Hockey
When you hit 5 and 15 in Speed and Agility you gain a point immediately for that attribute. You can’t be taller than 5’9 and weigh more than 165 lbs. You cannot go over 16 for Strength.

Old Man’s War
You gain TPE 15% slower after your rookie season. You regress 15% slower as well. You also have a great mullet.
Sure, some of these are probably ludicrous and not well thought out, but you’ve got the idea now! Let’s see what you can come up with!

I felt personally attacked when you read my mind.

I think this Perks and Consequences package should be implemented post-haste! Here’s an additional one:

Maroon’d
You gain TPE towards strength 30% faster, but your stamina and speed combined can’t be higher than 24.
