101 on choosing a SMJHL team
#1
(This post was last modified: 01-11-2022, 12:29 PM by AJW.)

The title is misleading
The reason why this article will 100% not explain how to choose a SMJHL team when you are a FA is because I do not know how! I joined the SHL about 9-10 hours ago when most people were asleep. These were the peaceful hours of my discord DMs, a time to relax and read up on the SHL create a player guides. I watched the YouTube video and felt like I had a basic understanding of how the site works, it was nice. I actually did a lot of reading, how to earn TPE, what's the difference between money earning and TPE earning. I come from the VHL where the TPE system is different, we have a portal there even. A lot of similarities but not that similar at all.

Anyways fast forward to like two hours ago when my player was officially published. MY DISCORD WAS ATTACKED!!! The GMs of the SMJHL were looking for blood. I've never been pinged so much at the same time in my life with new discord messages flying around. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, it was nice to have all these teams interested in my player. But man, it was honestly a bit overwhelming, I could not keep up. At one point I was talking to five different GMs at once... FIVE. I am loving the attention and I am excited to keep talking to these GMs to figure out a home for my player though. But now we refer back to the misleading title, how the hell do I choose?

There are some very welcoming and nice people with a GM spot, it is so hard to favor one. A majority told me about contracts, most talked about the atmosphere in locker rooms, a good chunk talked about playing minutes. Most conversations were a bit similar but there has been some standouts. It first starts from the initial interaction in the DMs. Was the GM welcoming? Did they talk to me like a human being or did they just want me to sign? Can I actually have a good conversation with them that will hopefully reflect how talking in their locker room be? These are the questions I like to ask myself, I want to be a people's person. I told the GMs this, my main goal right now is not to score a million goals in my first season, or win a cup right away, my priorities are on having fun. I want to join a fun locker room, connect with people on this site and enjoy my time while playing. Man, winning is fun, but the majority of your time on this site is in the discord or on the forums chatting it up with other members. So when teams come to me flexing that they're going to win the next cup, it does not interest me all that much - I mean it interests me a little I can not lie, but it's not my number one interest.

So here's the big question that maybe you the reader can answer: What do I choose? Do I go for a team that has a warm and fun locker room, but my player will rot away in games? Do I go for a team with an average locker room but my player will do good? Or do I go against that entire paragraph I just wrote and choose a ghost town locker room team that will win me enough cups that you'll call me the Montreal Canadiens. I think the answer is pretty clear in my opinion - fun over everything. Like my dad always told me, "the first step in winning is having fun". You know what daddio, winning doesn't always mean having fun, but maybe I will listen to your good sayings. I guess we will see who I sign with tomorrow. I am having a lot of fun so far and everyone on this site has been really nice making it a great environment to be apart of.

Eliminate your two least favourite teams and then roll a 12-sided die.

"Do I go for a team that has a warm and fun locker room, but my player will rot away in games?"

If your team is having fun, then theoretically everyone should be updating. So even if you lose a bunch early on, in the later seasons, you should see a big improvement as a team. So definitely go to wherever you think will be the most fun. That's the reason we're all here anyway!

I'm gonna tell SFP I'm testing FA and I'll try this method. I've never done it before.

Being that you created like 12 hours ago, i can confidently say your player won't done a ton for the first season you're on a team.

That said, come to VAN we have whales or something

Your method can be eliminating the 19 teams you aren't already on and then rolling a 1-sided die.

Come join us in QCC, where all the fun is at!

But seriously, take your time to talk with everyone, and get a sense for what they value and where you think you'll enjoy spending your time. If the culture is fun, then your team members are likely to stay active, which means the team will improve and you'll contend. If there's anything that you think will make you less likely to stay active, be open about that and make sure that the team you're looking for is a good fit. Fun is the most important thing to focus on, and luckily that tends to line up with building a competitive player and team. Good luck and welcome to the league!

We GMs are just excited, as you seem like an awesome user who will be LR active, wants to have fun, and is already getting things done in the forums! You're right though, lots of great options to choose from, so my advice is to go with your gut! I hope that means Detroit, but even if it isn't, I know you're going to have a ton of fun in the league...it's the reason we are all here already and have stuck with it!

I'm sure any team will be lucky to get you. Already killing it with the articles. Good luck with your decision and I hope you find what you are looking for in a team.

It was real fun talking to you this morning before I got caught up in a bunch of work at work. Real talk. Follow your gut. It honestly doesn't matter which team you end up picking as long as YOU are able to have fun here. As the entry league GM's, its our job to make sure your introduction to the league is worth YOUR time and effort and above all, enjoyable to make it worth staying.

Good luck and have fun!
