It's difficult to pick lyrics from one song, but I'm going with Niner Gang from E-40. I don't know why but that songs gets me hyped for the games

to quote the great mike skinner

"hold it down boy
your head's getting blurred
you know you can't stop
thinking of her
by all means
you can vibe with this girl
but just don't mug yourself
that's right don't mug yourself"
(don't mug yourself)

or i could easily do
"i'm not trying to pull you
even though i would want to
i think you are pretty fit
you're fit but my gosh don't you now it"
(fit but you know it)

but fuck it i'll do both

A lot of lyrics from Eminem speaks to people. Off the top of my head any of his classics like Toy Soldiers would be a good place to start.

Step by step, heart to heart, left right left
We all fall down, like toy soldiers
Bit by bit, torn apart
We never win but the battle wages on for toy soldiers

I'm feeling extra gay tonight so here's some Car Seat Headrest lyrics.

"The people that I’ve talked to
And the books that I’ve read
And the TV shows and movies that I’ve seen

Are all I have to turn to
To learn how to live
But when? When? When? When?
When? When? When will I ever learn?"

Kimochi Warui (When? When? When? When? When? When? When?) - Car Seat Headrest

I could spend a while going into this song cause it's one of my favorites and there's a lot of relatable themes. These lines resonate with me as someone who has done a lot of time thinking about identity and who I am as a person, how much of it is me and how much comes from the media I consume or the people I associate myself with. Maybe there is no separation between those and myself at all.

"And pretty soon you'll find some nice young
Satanist with braces and one
Capital "O", significant Other
And you can take him home to your mother and
Say "ma, this is my brother" "

Beach Life-In-Death - Car Seat Headrest

Dont think I've ever been able to listen to this particular part of the song without crying. This is from the perspective of a gay man coming home with their significant Other and instead of telling his mother that they are dating, he tells her that he is his brother, his friend. Coming out to your parents can be a painful thing for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's easier to avoid the conflict and hide the truth.

"Sometimes all I really want to feel is love
Sometimes I'm angry that I feel so angry
Sometimes my feelings get in the way
Of what I really feel I needed to say"

Edit the Sad Parts - Modest Mouse

A bonus one because I love this song. Emotions and thoughts can be really, really confusing. A lot of anger, in particular, can come from not understanding what or why or how you're feeling. Not being able to understand how you yourself feel leads to being unable to communicate the ideas you really want to communicate. Maybe you have a clear idea of what you want to say, but conflicting and confusing feelings stop you from saying it.

If we are choosing some of my favourite song lyrics I am going to lyrics straight of the song Spaceman by the Killers. Now I personally have never battled depression but this song really hit a different way, and I really really love it. I honestly just love any song by the Killers tbh, but something about these lyrics just stands out, and really makes you understand to an extent what some people go through. That’s what I get out of it at least.

"It started with a low light
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed
And then they took my blood type
It left a strange impression in my head

You know that I was hoping
That I could leave this star-crossed world behind
But when they cut me open
I guess that changed my mind

And you know I might
Have just flown too far from the floor this time
'Cause they calling me by my name
And the zipping white light beams
Disregards the bombs and satellites

That was the turning point
That was one lonely night

The star maker says it ain't so bad
The dream maker's gonna make you mad
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
It's all in your mind"

Well now I'm back at home, and
I'm looking forward to this life I live
You know it's gonna haunt me
So hesitation to this life I give
You think you might cross over
You're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea
You better look it over
Before you make that leap

And you know I'm fine
But I hear those voices at night sometimes
They justify my claim
And the public don't dwell my transmission
'Cause it wasn't televised

But it was the turning point
Oh, what a lonely night

The star maker says it ain't so bad
The dream maker's gonna make you mad
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
It's all in your mind"

The star maker says it ain't so bad
The dream maker's gonna make you mad
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
It's all in your mind"

My global position systems are vocally addressed
They say the Nile used to run from east to west
They say the Nile used to run
From east to west

I'm fine but I hear
Those voices at night
Sometimes

The star maker says it ain't so bad
The dream maker's gonna make you mad
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
It's all in your mind"

The star maker says it ain't so bad
The dream maker's gonna make you mad
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
It's all in your mind"

It's all in my mind
It's all in my mind"

My favorite artist of all time is the great Bob Dylan, on of his all time greats is from Blowin' in the Wind:

Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Dylan was saying that the answer to these questions are out there, it just takes people getting together and finding them

Honorable mention to a Modest Mouse lyric I think about a lot:

In this life that we call home
The years go fast and the days go so slow
The days go so slow

Sometimes life just feels like this, you go by day by day waiting for something and then suddenly it's 10 years later. Depressing but reality sometimes

honestly i think my favorite song lyrics are from Yung Gravy's songs. All of them are so incredibly ridiculous yet rhyme so well and have such an incredible beat that it's impossible to not headbang in unison.

I had my first child in 2018 and at the time I was heavily spinning "A Black Mile To The Surface" by Manchester Orchestra. The lead singer, Andy Hull, wrote much of that album through the lens of becoming a first time father and it resonated with me HARD. I don't know if I can even pick just one line from the album but my absolute favorite track on the album contains a couple of bangers.

"I can not only see, but you stopped me from blinking
Let me watch you as close as a memory
Let me hold you above all the misery
Let me open my eyes and be glad that I got here"

This speaks to just the complete 180 in world view from focus on self to focus on your linage and offspring. I think It's damn beautiful. Like nothing matters, not even the misery that you've lived through. Because it all brought you to this moment where you're holding your child and all you want to do is cherish every second of the here and now.

"There is nothing you keep, there is only your reflection"

Again, this speaks about your legacy here on earth and how it's not about the things that you have or the work that you did, but it's about your 'reflection' which is your kids who look like you and are a 'reflection' of your parenting. That line hits me like a ton of bricks and makes me want to be the best dad I can.

Manchester Orchestra has been my favorite band for over a decade but I HIGHLY encourage anyone who has kids or is planning to have kids to listen to that album. It's a legit masterpiece.

The two lines that I listed are from the album closer "The Silence" if you'd rather just go that route.

They see me mowin'
My front lawn
I know they're all thinking
I'm so White N' nerdy

Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Can't you see I'm white n' nerdy
Look at me I'm white n' nerdy!
I wanna roll with-
The gangsters
But so far they all think
I'm too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
I'm just too white n' nerdy
Really, really white n' nerdy

First in my class here at M.I.T.
Got skills, I'm a Champion of D&D
MC Escher that's my favorite MC
Keep your 40
I'll just have an Earl Grey tea
My rims never spin to the contrary
You'll find that they're quite stationary
All of my action figures are cherry
Stephen Hawking's in my library
My MySpace page is all totally pimped out
Got people begging for my top 8 spaces
Yo I know Pi to a thousand places
Ain't got no grills but I still wear braces
I order all of my sandwiches with mayonnaise
I'm a whiz at minesweeper I can play for days
Once you see my sweet moves you're gonna stay amazed,
my fingers movin' so fast I'll set the place ablaze
There's no killer app I haven't run
At Pascal, well, I'm number 1
Do vector calculus just for fun
I ain't got a gat but I got a soldering gun
"Happy Days" is my favourite theme song
I can sure kick your butt in a game of ping pong
I'll ace any trivia quiz you bring on
I'm fluent in JavaScript as well as Klingon
Here's the part I sing on

They see me roll on, my Segway!
I know in my heart they think I'm
white n' nerdy!
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Can't you see I'm white n' nerdy
Look at me I'm white n' nerdy
I'd like to roll with-
The gangsters
Although it's apparent I'm too
White n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
I'm just too white n' nerdy
How'd I get so white n' nerdy?

I've been browsing, inspectin'
X-men comics you know I collect 'em
The pens in my pocket
I must protect 'em
my ergonomic keyboard never leaves me bored
Shopping online for deals on some writable media
I edit Wikipedia
I memorized "Holy Grail" really well
I can recite it right now and have you ROTFLOL
I got a business doing web sites
When my friends need some code who do they call?
I do HTML for them all
Even made a homepage for my dog!
Yo! Got myself a fanny pack
they were having a sale down at the GAP
Spend my nights with a roll of bubble wrap
POP POP! Hope no one sees me gettin' freaky!

I'm nerdy in the extreme and whiter than sour cream
I was in AV club and Glee club and even the chess team!
Only question I ever thought was hard
Was do I like Kirk or do I like Picard?
Spend every weekend
at the renaissance fair
Got my name on my underwear!

They see me strollin'
They laughin'
And rollin' their eyes 'cause
I'm so white n' nerdy
Just because I'm white n' nerdy
Just because I'm white n' nerdy
All because I'm white n' nerdy
Holy cow I'm white n' nerdy
I wanna bowl with-
the gangsters
but oh well it's obvious I'm
white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
I'm just too white n' nerdy
Look at me I'm white n' nerdy!

This here is concrete evidence that Weird Al is the best white rapper and I won't hear any arguments. It's very relatable too because I am first in my class at M.I.T.

Everybody was in it, from miles around
Down at the speedway, some kinda Elvis thing
Well I ain't no movie star
But I can get behind anything

I'm not usually a big lyric-listener in music. I'm more drawn to sounds because I'm usually working, playing games, or driving when I'm listening to music. Since I'm not focused, a lot of lyrics blend into their backing tracks and it's just a blob of sounds that I can take or leave. It's led to some bad realizations when I start trying to mumble lyrics along and find out that I don't like what the catchy song says. That said, I love the use of cadence, iambic pentameter, and dips into wordplay in "Be Prepared", Scar's song in "The Lion King".

Quote:My words are a matter of pride
It's clear from your vacant expressions
The lights are not all on upstairs
But we're talking kings and successions
Even you can't be caught unawares

And then later...

Quote:It's great that we'll soon be connected
With a king who'll be all-time adored
Of course, quid pro quo, you're expected
To take certain duties on board
The future is littered with prizes
And though I'm the main addressee
The point that I must emphasize is
You won't get a sniff without me!

"We're all made up of each other
From dust to dust to dust
You and me, the same, my brother
From dust to dust to dust"

I like these lyrics because they remind me about how in the grand scheme of things we're all the same and are just tiny parts of the same huge ecosystem of the universe.

A song that has always helped me immeasurably with loss, as it is specifically a song about coping with loss, is Machines by the Scottish band Biffy Clyro. In particular, this reminder that no matter how bad you feel, you can emerge from it as strong as before:

I’ve started falling apart, I’m not savouring life
I’ve forgotten how good it could be to feel alive
Take the pieces and build them skyward
