A Change For The Better


Playing in the SMJHL has been a big change for me in a lot of ways. From where I live, which is one of the biggest changes, who my friends are, and my lifestyle. Where I live has been the biggest change, as I am used to play in in Alberta, Canada. Once my hockey career started to pick up pace, I moved almost every year, playing on a new team at that same rate, and in my later years, I didn't even live with my own family! I moved in with a billet family at the age of 15, when I started to play farther away from home, as I did in Lethbridge. It made life so much easier living with another family, being closer to where I played hockey. But now since I have moved into the big city of St. Louis, I can gladly say my life has changed for the better. I have made many friends while in St. Louis, most of them from the Scarecrows, but some of them just from St. Louis. On my daily routine to the rink for the morning practice, I always stop at the same local diner. Randy, the owner of the diner, is always there to greet me in the morning, ask me how hockey has been going, and he always has a fresh piece of Avocado Toast waiting for me at my usual spot, always 6:30 sharp. My new elderly neighbor, Mrs. Gervais, is out in her front yard every night after practice tending to her beautiful garden, and she always tells me to come over and take some of her raspberries. I'll tell you, those are the best raspberries you will ever taste, even if you tasted every raspberry in the entire world. No one can beat those raspberries. I have grown a bond with the Scarecrows General Manager, Sparky, who helped me take my baby steps for my first few days in the SMJHL. Even SabresFan, Snussu, and my fellow rookie Joshua, have grown to be some of my dearest friends on the ice, and off the ice as well. But the biggest change for me is my lifestyle changes I have had to make. Now, with the opportunity to be drafted into the SHL next season, I am doing whatever I can do to get myself there. One of my biggest lifestyle changes I have had to implement is a major change to my diet. To be at the top of my game, I need to feel and look healthy. I have introduced a planner to stay on top of my diet, I include foods that help me, not harm me. I need foods that have a large amount of calcium,  iron, potassium, and fiber. I have the same set of meals every game day, including a Bran Cereal with Randy's special Avocado Toast for breakfast, a Salami Sandwich, loaded with lettuce, tomatoes, lots of salami, mustard, and mayo for lunch. For supper, I have a beautifully cut piece of tenderloin steak, with potatoes, corn, and peas. My snack throughout the day features a fruit smoothie, with some of Mrs. Gervais is famous for raspberries. All in all, the move to St. Louis has been a blast, and I hope to be with the St. Louis Scarecrows for many years to come. After the Scarecrows, the next stop for me is the SHL, and once I am there, I have it all to owe to my loving and supportive family, and to everyone from St. Louis who is helping me on my journey right now.
