The New Orleans Specters Playoff history (2x playoff media)
#1

For those of you that are newer to the SHL, it may seem like the New Orleans Specters have been near the bottom of the standings for ever, and you’re not wrong.  The majority of the current Specters roster have yet to experience the excitement of the SHL playoffs.  This hasn’t always been the case.  In this media piece I will be looking back at the history of the New Orleans Specters, their playoffs specifically.

Season 46

It has been almost 20 seasons since the New Orleans Specters entered the SHL alongside the Chicago Syndicate in S46.  The first season for the Specters was almost as good as it gets.  They made it into the playoffs and did not even have to play in the wildcard card round, they were able to rest up and wait for their first ever playoff opponent.  New Orleans history was made when the Los Angles Panthers and the New Orleans Specters met for the franchises first playoff game.

The first game didn’t go as planned with the with the Panthers winning the first contest with a score of 2-1, the Panthers scoring first in the 2nd period (Shouta Aizawa) and doubling their lead in the 3rd with a goal by Joshua Woodcroft.  The Specters didn’t go down without a fight, their first ever playoff goal came with under 5 minutes left in the game by Vasily Horvat.  They couldn’t muster another goal in the game and lost their playoff with a final score of 2-1.  The Specters were outshot 30-24 in the game and out hit with 20 hits for LA and 10 for the Specters.

Game number 2 had the same final score but a different winner.  The Specters struck first in the opening period with Specters legend Nicholas Williams scoring his first playoff goal as a Specter.  The Panthers answered back in the first and the teams went into the break all tied up.  Just five minutes into the second period, SHL legend Oisin Fletcher scored the eventual game winner making the score 2-1, which lasted the rest of the game.  The Specters dominated the shots in this game with the 51 shots on net to the 24 that the Panthers recorded. The Panthers played a bit more physically then the Specters again with 20 hits to 16.  This first playoff win for the expansion team was a great victory and left the Specters wanting more.

Game three saw the Specters heading to sunny California and they came with some gusto.  The first two contests between these squads were low scoring affairs, this was not.  The Specters lit the lamp 7 times in this game and the Panthers only found the back of the net 3 times.  Xavier Paquette opened the flood gates with the Specters first and second goal, followed by three unanswered goals by the home team, seeing the Panthers take a 3-2 lead half way through the second period.  The Specters answered after that and often.  3 more Specters goals came in the second with Nicholas Williams with his 2nd of the playoffs, DeMaricus Smyth got his first and Oisin Fletcher got their 2nd as well.  The third period had Fletcher netting their 2nd of the game (3rd of the playoffs) and Roman Augustus popping the Specters seventh of the match, the final of the game to make it end at 7-3.  The Specters outshot the Panthers again, 47-29 and the Panthers out hit them again, 18-16.

Looking to take both games in LA, the Specters Alex Andani scored the first goal of the game early in the first period but the Panthers tied it up shortly after.  The Specters came out flying in the third with Clint Eastwood scoring his first playoff goal as a Specter, followed by Roman Augustus and Oisin Fletcher.  The Panthers got another one back but it was too little too late.  The Specters took a commanding 3-1 series lead in a game where they were outshot 33-32 and out hit 17-14.

The Specters hoped to close out the series at home but that did not go as planned.  A 3 goal 2nd period by the Panthers was too much for the New Orleans squad.  The Panthers added another goal in the 3rd and the Specters avoided the shutout with Xavier Paquette erasing the goose egg in the final 5 minutes of the game.  The Panthers also controlled the shots in the game, topping the Specters with 40 shots to their 24.  And to add to the Panthers domination, they out hit the Specters again with 23 to 16.

Going back to LA was not great for the Panthers.  With their 2nd attempt to close out their first ever playoff series, they stumbled pretty hard.  The Panthers did not want to lose at home and they proved that to everyone.  They dismantled the Specters right from the go, scoring 2 goals in the first and a third in the 2nd.  The Specters tried to stay competitive with a goal from DeMaricus Smyth in the second period but a 3 goal 3rd period by the Panthers but the game well out of reach for the Specters who had Smyth score another goal, his third of the playoffs, in the final minute of the game.  The 6-2 loss on the road wasn’t at all pretty, the Panthers out shot the Specter 39 to 20 but the Specters out hit the Panthers for the first time of the series, 19-17.

A game seven was needed in the first ever New Orleans Specters playoff series.  The Specters were looking at their third attempt to knock the Panthers out, the team from La La land was looking to complete the comeback from being down 3-1 in the series.  The Specters opened the scoring early with DeMaricus Smyth scoring in the first minute of the game but the Panthers answered right back a minute later.  Vasily Horvat made it 2-1 for the Specters before the end of the first and that lead lasted until the about the half way point of the 3rd period.  The buzzer went to signal the end of regulation time and the Specters and Panthers were heading to sudden death overtime, the winner not only winning the game but the series as well.  It didn’t take too long, a Specters legend in the making, DeMaicus Smyth scored his second of the game, fifth of the playoffs, and secured the series for the
New Orleans Specters.  They had won their first playoff series.

Next up for the Specters were the Minnesota Chiefs.  The Chiefs faced the Calgary Dragons in their first match up and won the series in 6 games, so they were a bit more rested than the New Orleans Specters and it showed in the game one showdown. The Chiefs were out shot in the game by a wide margin, 37-19, but they made their shots count.  Scoring two first period goals and then one in the 2nd and 3rd, take the first game of the series 4-0.

The Specters bounced back in game number 2, Karl Hefeweizen scoring his first of the playoffs in the 1st period.  The Chiefs evened up to score in the second and the two teams finished regulation without another goal.  In the final 5 minutes of the overtime frame, Nicholas Williams scored his 3rd of the playoffs, giving the Specters the much needed win on the road to even up the series.  Aleister Cain was the deserving first star of the game however, stopping 43 of the 44 shots he faced.

Game three saw the series head to New Orleans, and it was an entertaining one for the hockey fans in the Big Easy, a 4 goal opening period started it all off, with both teams scoring twice (Roman Augustus 3rd and Adam Kaiser’s 1st).  The Specters netted two more in the second period, Kefeweizen and Fletcher finding the back of the net and the Chiefs added another one to end the 2nd with the Specters leading 4-3.  The third period had the two teams each score one more goal, Piotr Czerkawski scoring his first playoff goal as a Specters, giving the Specters a 5-4 win in front of the home crowd.

Game four had the Specters and Chiefs trade goals in the first and second period, the Specters Oisin Fletcher scoring his 6 of the playoffs.  The third period however was all the Specters, the great Jo Kurczewski scored his first two goals of the playoffs, sealing the win for the Specters and giving the expansion team a 3-1 series lead.
Heading into game 5 with a 3-1 series lead again, the Specters couldn’t seal the deal and were lit up by the Chiefs.  The Chiefs put 5 goals up to New Orleans one, scored by Xavier Paquette.  The tension was high after that game the Specters were now 1-4 in games were they could eliminate their opponents, they did not want this series to slip into another game seven match up.

Game six was the a very closely fought affair, with no goals in the first period from either team, it was Oisin Fletcher with their 7th goal of the playoffs scoring 1:37 into the second period.  That goal turned out to be the game winner as Aleister Cain earned the shutout and sent the Specters to the Challenge Cup final in their first season of the SHL, earning himself another well deserved first star of the game honour.

Having defeated the Hamilton Steelhawks and the Manhattan Rage along the way, the New Orleans Specters were matched up against the Buffalo Stampede in the final round.  Buffalo having better record, the series started out on the road for the Specters, in the home town of chicken wings.  The Buffalo Stampede opening up the scoring in the final series, scoring 2 minutes into the first frame.  But the Specters came to play in game number one and proceeded to score 3 goals in the first (Williams (4), Augustus (4), Smyth (6)).  They followed that up with three more goals in the 2nd (Paquette (5), Czerkawski (2), Kurczewski (3)).  The third saw Oisin Fletcher score his 8th of the playoffs and Buffalo scored the last goal of the game, making the final score 7-2 for the New Orleans Specters.

Buffalo did not want to head to New Orleans down 2 games to none and their intensity in the second game showed that. After a scoreless first, Nicholas Williams put the Specters on the board first with his 5th of the playoffs.  The Specters headed into the 3rd period with that slim 1-0 lead and the Stampede turned up their play, scoring 3 unanswered goals and taking the game with a final score of 3-1.

Game 3 was a back and forth tilt between the Stampede and Specters.  Buffalo got on the board first and the two teams traded goals after that, Sean Stevenson Jr scored his first for the Specters and Clint Eastwood got his second.  The first period ended with a 3-2 score in favour of the Stampede.  The Stampede scored first again in the second but the Specters followed up with two of their own (Kaiser (2), Physt (1)) tying the game heading into the third period.  Buffalo scored the only goal in the third and took the game with a final score of 5-4 and a series lead of 2-1.

Game 4 had Buffalo coming out really strong, scoring twice in the first period.  The Specters did not score their first goal until 5 minutes into the second period (Kurczewski (4)) and then two more by Czerkawski (3) and Hefeweizen (3).  Buffalo scored another goal at the end of the 2nd period, tying the game up at 3 goals a piece.  The third period was all Specters, DeMaricus Smyth scored his seventh of the playoffs and Joe Kurczewski scored his fifth and sixth of these playoffs, leading the Specters to a 6-3 victory. Tying the series at 2-2 in the process.

Game 5 was another close battle.  Buffalo scored first again but the Specters followed that with two of their own by Paquette (6) and Smyth (8).  The second period was all Buffalo with them scoring 2 goal and taking a 3-2 lead.  New Orleans wasn’t done though, Paquette popped his 2nd of the game at the start of the third period, his 7th of the playoffs and then Joe Kurczexski scored the game winner, his 7th of the playoffs and secured the 3-2 series lead.

Game six put the Specters in another familiar spot, they had the chance to knock out their opponent and win in all and they stated out amazingly, with DeMaricus Smyth scoring 2 goals in the first 5 minutes of the game (Smyth’s ninth and tenth goals).  Buffalo answered back though, scoring two of their own, tying the game at 2 a piece going into the 2nd period.  New Orleans scored first again with Joe Kurczewski scoring his 8th but Buffalo answered back 12 seconds later, tying it up once gain.  Buffalo then scored the go a head goal and held on to the lead until the final buzzer sounded, evening up the series and pushing the series to a game 7.

It all boiled down to this.  A do or die game between the Buffalo Stampede and the newest SHL team, the New Orleans Specters.  Game 7 was in Buffalo and the home team scored first, but the Specters answered back within a minute with their top goal scorer in the playoffs, DeMaricus Smyth scoring his 11th of the playoffs.  Buffalo scored another in the period making it 2-1 after the first.  The second period did not have any goals and the third period started with the Stampede up by one. The start of the third wasn’t kind to the Specters, the Stampede scored 2 goals in the first 5 minutes of the period, going up 4-1. The Specters scored their second of the game (Paquette (8)) but the comeback wasn’t completed.  Buffalo added another and the final was 5-2, the miraculous run of the expansion team was over.

Joe Kurczewski lead the Specters in the points department during the run, with 23 points, 8 goals and 15 assists.

DeMaricus Smyth lead all skaters in the SHL playoffs with 11 goals (tied with Oliver Konig).

New Orleans playoff appearances – 1 out of 1

New Orleans playoff record – 11 wins - 9 losses

Well, that is one season done, I’m going to try and stream line this a bit going forward, want to get this done while double media is still happening!

Season 47

The second season for the Specters saw them once again making the playoffs and avoiding the wildcard game while doing so.  This time around their first opponents were the Texas Renegades.  The Specters held the better record so they started the series in New Orleans.  The Specters started out great, especially Nicholas Williams who scored the games first two goals.  The Renegades got one back though and the first period ended 2-1 for the Specters.  After a scoreless 2nd period the Renegades turned it up a notch and scored two more goals taking the lead and the game in the final thirty seconds of regulation.

With the Renegades up 1-0 in the series, the Specters knew this was a must win at home.  Oisin Fletcher put the Specters on the board first but Texas turned it up again scoring 2 goals before the end of the first period. Fletcher lit the lamp again to start the period, tying the game.  But the Renegades scored again before the end of the 2nd frame.  Just past the halfway point of the third, DeMaricus Smyth scored for the Specters tying the game and forcing an overtime period.  The overtime period lasted one second past the eleven minute mark, with Texas legend, Andreas Kvalheim scoring the game winner and putting the Texas Renegades up 2-0 in the series.

After starting off losing the first two games, the New Orleans Specters knew they had to play better.  It took them about half of the first period for them to get their legs, but they got them.  Scoring 3 first period goals in the latter half of the period.  Roman Augustus with 2 goals and Oisin Fletcher with their 3rd of the playoffs. Fletcher found the back of the net again to start the third and then Texas’ got on the board.  Nicholas Williams answered shortly after with his third of the series, making the final score 5-2 and giving the Specters their first win of the S47 playoffs.

Looking to even the series up, the Specters took to the ice at home again.  The first period was a stalemate between the two teams and the 2nd period started just as the first did, 0-0. The Renegades opened up the scoring early with the first of the game but it took 45 seconds to answer back (Joe K (1)), and then again 46 seconds later and then one more time 1:30 after (Both goals from Paquette).  With 4 goals in the first 5 minutes of the game, the Specters came out of the 1st with a 3-1 lead. 30 seconds into the 3rd period had the Renegades score another early one to make it 3-2.  The Renegades then tied up the game at 3’s with 2:30 minutes left in regulation.  But overtime was not in the cards this night, Nicholas Williams (4) scored seconds after the game tying goal, regaining the lead for the Specters and sealing the victory and evening up the series at 2 games a piece.

Game five scoring was kicked off by the Renegades again but the Specters answered right back again.  Just over 30 seconds after Texas’ goal, DeMaricus Smyth scored his 2nd of the playoffs, then Oisin Fletcher netted his 5th of the playoffs putting the Specters in front for a few minutes before the Texans tied it up before the end of the first.  Oisin Fletcher popped two more goals in the first half of the 2nd period (numbers 6 & 7) and the first ever Specters playoff hattrick. Texas got another goal before the end of the 2nd but that was it for them. Piotr Czerkawski added one last one in the 3rd, his first of the playoffs, to make the final 5-3 for the Specters and giving them the 3-2 lead in the series.

Game six didn’t start out the best for the Specters.  The Renegades scored the only goal of the first and added another early in the 2nd period.  The Specters got their first of the game about half way into the 2nd period, Piotr Czerkawski getting his second of the playoffs.  Xavier Paquette scored his 3rd goal of the series tying the game in the third period, sending the two teams to overtime.  It was Texas who came out on top, scoring on the powerplay and sending this series to a seventh game, the third time in New Orleans short history they would face a do or die game seven.

Game seven started like the previous 3 games with the Renegades scoring first.  The Specters scored the next two (Kierkagaard (1) and Fletcher (8)) but the Renegades got their second goal as well and the first ended with a 2-2 tie. Joe Kurczewski scored his 2nd of the playoffs in the 2nd period, the lone goal of the frame.  With a tie game in a tied series, this was the last regulation period these two teams would play in. It was looking a lot like overtime was coming, until the last two minutes in which the Renegades scored twice, winning the game and the series, ended the Specters 2nd playoff run.

Oisin Fletcher lead the Specters with 12 points, 8 goals and 4 assists

Fletcher also finished 2nd in goals for the playoffs with 8 goals, only 2 behind the leader, while playing 10 less games

Playoff appearances – 2 out of 2

Playoff record – 14 wins – 13 losses

Looks like I’m going to try and stream line this even more!  I will skip most of the goal recaps and maybe focus on key games only.

S48

The Calgary Dragons were the New Orleans Specters first playoff opponents in S48.  They started out at home but dropped the first game to the Dragons with a final score of 4-3, a very close game that was won by a goal in the last five seconds of the game by the Dragons. Game #2 was a dominate performance by the Specters kicked off with four goals in the first period.  They Specters ended up winning the game 6-1, tying up the series with the Dragons. Overtime was needed to settle game three, and not just one overtime period.  38:55 minutes of overtime was played before rookie Jimmy Slothface ended the game in the Specters favour, taking a 2-1 series lead in the process.  Calgary came back strong in game 4 and beat the Specters by the same score they put up in game two, 6-1.  The Dragons victory tied up the series making it a best of three series. Game 5 was tied up 1-1 going into the third period but a four goal outburst by the Specters sealed the deal and they took the game with a final score of 5-2.  Game 6 had the Specters take control very early with a 3 goal first period which was too much for the Dragons to come back from, the Specters won the game 5-1 and the series was over with the Specters big win.

The conference finals had the Specters hosting the Winnipeg Jets for game number one. The Specters impressed their home fans during this game.  Scoring 2 goals in the 2nd period and adding another in the 2nd, the New Orleans Specters went into the final period up 3-0.  Winnipeg made it close, with 2 goals the start the 3rd, but the Specters scored a fourth and put the game out of reach, final score 4-2. Game #2 didn’t start great for the home team, the Jets scored 2 first period goals, which ended up being the only two goals of the game.  Winnipeg earned the shutout, stopping 27 shots from the New Orleans Specters. Game 3 in Winnipeg started out great for the Specters, 2 early goals by the visitors.  But Winnipeg answered back, many times, scoring 5 goals of their own and taking a 2-1 series lead. The Specters were the dominate team in the next game, scoring the first 4 goals of the game, winning the game with a final score of 6-2. The series was now tied at 2s. The Specters were the team to earn a shutout in game number 5, blanking the Jets 2-0. With a chance to close out the series, the Specters took the Jets the overtime on their ice, the Specters came out on the wrong side of this one, the Jets ended the game in overtime, sending the series to a game seven match up. The Winnipeg Jets came to play in the game. Even thought they were outshot 40-31, the Jets took it to the New Orleans Specters, winning the game and the series with a 5-2 win.

Oisin Fletcher was the Specters leading scorer again with seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 13 games.
