S63 DFA Bounties #4 - The Alternate Timeline
#1

The SMJHL finals are on their way, and we're slowly closing in on the off-season and SMJHL draft.

Before the real busy season starts, and you're going to be answering scouting messages from every team, it is time to sit back and relax a little. Dreaming about how your life would've looked without hockey.

Written Task: What would your player be doing now, if he or she hadn't pursued a career in hockey? (250 word min.) Graphic Task: Show us a picture of your player, doing what they'd do if they weren't a hockey player.

Reward: $500,000 for doing one of the above

Only current SMJHL Draftable Free Agents (S64 SMJHL Draftees, SHL class of S65) are eligible for this bounty.
There is no need to claim this anywhere. After grading the money should pop up in your account 'automatically'.
Deadline: Sunday, March 6 @ 11:59pm EST

If Hynek Heidinger did not travel from his hometown of Graz, Austria to North America to participate in the SMJHL and ultimately the SHL he would still be in Austria. Instead of a hockey player, Hynek would have taken up farming. He would have saved up to buy his own plot of land, buy some animals including sheep, chicken, goats and alpacas and he would raise them on his farm. Eventually he would find a girl, fall in love and they would raise their kids to be farmers. Hynek would sell any animal products he would use and make just enough money while surviving off the land. His wife would have an amazing garden where she would grow all sorts of fruits and vegetables. Eventually Hynek and his wife would grow old, living in the same farm house they got married in. The 5 kids would grow up and get tired of the farm life. One of them would move to Spain to start his career in bull fighting, two of them moved to North America to start a mouse taxidermy business together. The youngest child stayed to look after her parents while the oldest moved to Mexico to repurpose roads and train tracks.

Hynek and his wife watched on as all their kids spread out and started lives of their own. If you think of the story from the movie UP, that is basically the story of Hynek Heidinger and his wife. They loved eachother, grew old together, she eventually passed away, and sad music played in the background as Hynek reminisced about the past. Instead of hooking his house up to balloons and flying away Hynek just watched TV all day everyday until he died of a broken heart. That is the life of Hynek Heidinger if he had not become a professional hockey player, so good thing he is.

Obviously M’Baku would still be an athlete even if he hadn’t picked hockey! He’s never had interest in doing anything else. He was a fine student, and probably could have gotten into any university he wanted with his parents’ connections in the business and scientific worlds. That never fit Baku, though.

From an early age, Baku took to sport. He loved to run around and compete. The childhood dream for many never faded in his mind, and he did everything he could to be a professional athlete. Early on, he thought, like many, he would be a futball (“soccer”) star. He always enjoyed the more physical sports, and once he hit puberty and started being able to build muscle, he loved working out. He watched as many sports—any sport—as he could, figuring out ways to take the footwork from basketball or futball and apply it to rugby or American football (and eventually hockey). His parents, both very successful in their careers, were able to provide Baku any opportunity he could want to develop his physical gifts.

With his size, strength, and competitive drive, Baku likely would have ended up a playing American football. He’s built like a GD ISFL linebacker or edge rusher already, it’s not hard to imagine him knocking a quarterback’s teeth out on a blitz. His skillset plays much better to the defensive side of the ball than offense, and I would be shocked if he wasn’t an All Pro player someday. If he turned to basketball like his childhood friend, Chinyelu Sani of the Detroit Generals, I think he would be one of the most fearsome rebounders in the league. He doesn’t have the height to be a true center, but with his strength and tenacity, he would be a ferocious rebounder and defender at power forward. Through hard work, I could see him having at least a decent shot, too.

In summary, there’s no question that M’Baku Olubori was built to be a professional athlete.

If Jolmi Koviu, the undrafted Simulation Major Junior Hockey League forward prospect, wasn't able to pursuit his lifelong all time dream of being a professional hockey player in the Simulation Hockey League he would probably be a game show host. The reason that professional hockey athlete Jolmi Koivu would prefer that he would be a game show host if he wasn't a professional hockey player is because Jolmi Koivu is a very generous person. Jolmi Koivu is a very generous person and this would affect his ability to be a good game show host because he would be very genuinely happy giving away money to people, in this case contestants that deserve it, and that passion would show through the TV and potential and current viewers alike would show how passionate he is for the type of media. Also, Jolmi Koivu is all about being in the big spotlight, hence his reason for becoming a professional hockey player, that and his undeniable talent for the game of hockey, but the allure of the spotlight would make him perfect for the job. Overall, future professional hockey league player Jolmi Koivu would make a perfect game show host because he is a very generous person and has a burning desire to be in the spotlight. That is why Jolmi Koivu would be a perfect gameshow host and why he would choose that career path if he for some reason didn't get drafted even though he is a perfect hockey player who is good at every facet of the game.

If Shiny Shuckle hadn't been exposed to a Team Rocket lab accident, he never would have decided to pursue a career in hockey. Contrarily, Shiny Shuckle was a promising Toughness Contest competitor in early levels. He had the moves, he had the accessories, he had the Bold nature. Most importantly, he had the Intangibles, those nerves of steel that made him seem bigger than his actual frame. If not for that fateful day in some Game Corner basement or another, he might have won a second Contest and then continued a path to stardom, wowing audiences the world over with his Rock Slide and Gastro Acid.

But perhaps he could have been more of a battler. He most likely would have, had he stayed with his original trainer. They'd have done the typical Pokemon things; having adventures, meeting new people, and getting into battles. While Shuckle's a good anchor with his ridiculous defense and special defense stats, Power Trick made the meta some years back as a way to deal a ton of damage all at once with some set up ahead of time, especially in partner battles. Perhaps with the right team around him, Shuckle could have done the Pokemon battle equivalent of war crimes, levelling a team's heavy hitters with over 1,000,000 hit points in damage in a single move.

Or, more heartbreakingly, maybe Shiny Shuckle was destined to be a PC Box museum piece. Stuck in a virtual environment, never growing, never exploring, always remembering distantly that he'd once been something for a brief moment.

If Tom Taylor weren’t waiting to be drafted in the SMJHL or even playing hockey professionally, he would still be in Japan trying to spend as much time as he could with his family and friends. Not only that, but Tom would also be focusing most of his time on his second favourite sport, soccer. Soccer is a popular sport in Japan. Taylor was a great soccer player growing up and throughout his teenage years when he used to play it back in Japan. Tom had so many talents and skills. He also was a multi-sport athlete, but he mainly excelled in hockey and soccer. When Tom was younger, he didn’t know which sports path he would take more seriously to be his main sport as he loved both sports, but ultimately, Tom chose to play hockey for his family and his opportunities. Tom was a soccer star in Japan. He was a very flashy player as he modelled his game after Neymar, his favourite soccer player. Tom was a very skillful player, and he knew how to excite the crowd. If Tom were never to play hockey professionally, he would be playing soccer professionally somewhere else in the world for a massive club as he was too skilled not to be signed or scouted by any teams worldwide. He is a determined and motivated player. He would have been an exciting player that any team would’ve appreciated the qualities he would’ve brought to their team and locker room as he was destined to great soccer player.

Tommy Westbrook (But this time i upd is a man of many talents. What would he be doing if he was not playing hockey? Let me tell you, it would be pretty crazy. Buckle up for this one steve. He would be doing probably something involving food, like grapes maybe? Like he would probably open up one those winery places where they make the wine. He would produce some nice wines for people all around the world can enjoy and drink. But thats not the only endeauvour that Tommy Westbrook (but this time i upd would persue. He has something of what we like to call spunk. He would be a golfer who could hit balls so hard because of all the slap shot training he does. He could absolutely hit a golf ball over 350 yarsds. With those amrs? Yeah im thinking he could smash it. Putting is not his main stay but we all have something that we need work on. He'd also maybe work at a casino and shuffle cards for all the cool hot shot gamblers that would come into to play fun gambling games like poker and roueltte. But at the end of the day we all know that Tommy Westbrook (But this time i upd would be a head chef at a nice restaurant. He specializes in big meat such as elk and cow and deer. He cooks in on the over at HIGH setting so that it cooks just at the right temperature for cookage. But at the end of the day hockey is the play.

its safe to say that if B Jobin was not going to be a professional hockey player in Simulation Hockey League, he would probably pursue another career that is not hockey related. What is the career you ask? Let's find out. If he were not gonna be able to make a career out of hockey, he would probably try to do another non-hockey related field, like maybe acting or stand up comedy. He's always had a passion for acting since he was a wee little guy watching TV with his mama, and while he was already a pretty nasty skater at the time, he always wondered what it would be like if he honed his craft at acting, so not being able to make the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League would truly be the motivator he would need to truly jump into being an actor, using his platform as a halfway decent hockey player to gain early recognition. When B Jobin was in high school he became fascinated with stand up comedy and always thought he might have the chops for it since he was always the joke guy in his locker rooms growing up, and he even had a childhood teammate named Ben Waters Jr. (also in this coming draft) who tried to encourage him to try it out. B Jobin never did but if hockey didn't work out that is probably another thing he'd pursue. It is nice to dream about various futures, but B Jobin is here and he is going to make his mark on the simulation hockey world, stay tuned

In an alternate universe where Sophie Bordeleau was never a hockey player, she would still be on quite an adventure. It's not a small city, but she'd probably leave while staying close to her family and friends, maybe go to a school in Montreal. Her passion other than hockey has always been activism, so Sophie would have applied for a program where she could help people - a gender studies or history major. She still would have ended up being an out and proud queer person, as that's always been part of her personality, and being able to explore more about queer women throughout history seems like something that Sophie could have done to really get in touch with her own identity. Where the change from her actual life probably would have changed is whether or not she actually meets Jamie. The girl's crush on her partly arose from watching Sophie play so well for her high school team, and if she doesn't literally run into her, would the two have met as they did? Perhaps Jamie eventually finds the courage to come out on her own, but Sophie definitely helped it along. Finishing school, she seems like the type of person who would probably have gone into academia, becoming a bookish but outspoken woman. Sophie would probably become a professor or teacher somewhere, being passionate about teaching university students about LGBTQ+ history while working to uncover more of it herself. In her spare time, she'd likely live at home with her wife and one or more cats. A simple life for an interesting woman.

Ricky Koivu is very professional, ambitious and highly focused on further developing his hockey career into being one of the best players in the Simulation Hockey League. Growing up in Montreal, a very hockey crazed city, this has been Koivu's goal since being a young child watching the Habs play on TV. This makes it difficult to imagine a scenario in which there is no hockey in his life, but there is definitely a clear answer. Scouts know that Ricky Koivu is a very intelligent player and his high level of hockey IQ is possibly his best attribute right now as a prospect. This intelligence translates to off the ice as well for Koivu, who is well versed in another field besides hockey. He is very capable in the accounting field, and picked up a lot of knowledge in that field from the tutelage of San Francisco Pride player Yngve Simonsson, who himself is an expert in the finances department. During an off-season where they met in Europe, Simonsson took the promising Montreal born Finnish forward under his wing and taught him some tips and tricks for managing the finances of a corporation. Simonsson's expertise in the field led to him being the lead financial advisor for the Pride, as well as a top 6 forward, so his advice was very useful to the young Koivu. If hockey never quite worked out for the young Montrealer, he would still have a very promising future in the financial department, and he would complete his studies to be an expert in the field.

i think all of us, reader and myself, ben waters, would all be on the same page in saying that ben waters jr, the son of the person writing this, was always going to play hockey, as it is his destiny, his calling. But on the off chance that he wasn't playing hockey? He would instead be an epic poker player. WOAH! ALL IN! UH OH! HES BLUFFING! these are both things that would be said all the time, commonly in fact, if Ben Waters Jr. took up the felt instead of the hockey rink. Another epic talent that Ben Waters jr. has that we all know about is his very strong movie producing skills. you guys see the new batman? well, its pretty good, but what if it was actually as good as the best movie of all time, Wall-E? that's what ben waters jr would do. Batman needs a rebrand, we all agree on this. What if he was a cool robot? that would fix the franchise for good. 100 movies could be made. That shows you the genius of ben waters jr in the movie industry. Now, finally, ben waters of jr fame would be one of the best valorant players on earth if his schedule allowed him to practice. bang! bang! bang! a lot of shots, and a lot of hits. just like his hockey career! haha. but all in all, it has to be said, when it comes to the simulation major junior hockey league, no one can compete with what Ben Waters Jr, brings to the table, and that's why he's gonna be the best.
