Who is...?

Part 1: Nickolaus Klaus

This is the first part of a series of short articles that I am planning on doing at a semi-regular basis over the foreseeable future. Every article will be a short summary of a players SHL career in written form followed my a stat summary. For every article I will select one player to write about from my collection of trading cards. These articles will also contain an element of what I call 'in-universe' writing and will not be strictly based on TPE and performance but will have hints of flavour from the imaginary world that our players live in. I will mostly focus on writing about already retired players in the interest of furthering league history which is something that I have always felt very passionate about for quite a long time but I have struggled to find an appropriate way for me to channel that interest into something productive. This is my attempt to do just that. So without further ado, I bring you part 1 of the Who is...? series, Nickolaus Klaus.

---------- The Career ----------

Nickolaus Klaus was drafted in the second round at 16th overall in the S45 draft by the Minnesota Chiefs (now Minnesota Monarchs). The German born forward would play a total of three seasons in the SMJHL for the Kelowna Knights before being called up play in the SHL with the Minnesota Chiefs.  In his rookie season (S47), he put up a respectable 10 goals, 19 points in 50 games on a struggling Minnesota squad. However, due to internal struggles in Minnesota at that time his stint with the Chiefs would be cut short as Klaus decided to try his luck on the open market as a free agent ahead of the S48 season. The young forward would sign a two year deal with the Tampa Bay Barracuda.

Reenergized and moved from the wing to centre, Klaus would put up a career high in points in his sophomore season with the Barracuda, scoring 19 goals and totalling 45 points in 50 games played. Klaus stayed with Tampa Bay for an additional 3 seasons, putting up some respectable totals during his tenure and earning a name for himself as a hard working and reliable forward. However, after struggling in S51 on a team that was on the decline, the decision was made by the Tampa management to sell players in order to attain some assets for the coming rebuild. In light of this, Klaus was moved in the S51 post-season to the West Kendall Platoon (now Baltimore Platoon) in a sign and trade deal for a S55 2nd rounder (which Baltimore would later re-acquire and use to draft Lord Raiden) and a S53 4th rounder (which would amount to nothing).

At this time, Baltimore was heading into a slump as they were entering a phase of retooling and rebuilding their core (the result of which we are seeing in the current SHL as Baltimore has turned into a powerhouse in recent seasons). Klaus would play a full five seasons for the franchise and be part of the move from West Kendall to Baltimore in S53. During these tough years for the franchise, Klaus was one of the highlights on the team as he would finish second in scoring three times,  lead the team in scoring once and lead the team in goals scored once (scoring 24 goals, a career high for Klaus)  during his five season tenure. With the platoon having the second worst season in franchise history in S56, Klaus decided to hang up his skates and call it a career. In the 250 games he played with the franchise, he scored 75 goals and racking up 99 assists for a total of 174 points. A respectable total considering the circumstances.

Oh really? I had no idea! He was a little bit before my time, wasn't paying much attention to the site in the early 50's.

There was some drama around him and a possible multi in the late s40's, too, but that turned out to be nothing.
