The SMJHL's Vancouver Whalers are obviously deep into a rebuild right now, the S64 season being a total wash right now as they dwell at the bottom of the standings. This is not great obviously but the Whalers are very much doing what they can to develop the right way going forward and build a competitive, exciting young roster of their own merit. This last draft was a massive contributor towards that end goal, and in this deep dive we're going to be looking at the first two Whalers draft picks in the SMJHL S64 Entry Draft, and seeing how they did. Let's jump right into it:

Round 1, Pick Number 3 - Miroslav Ketil: Miroslav Ketil is a big super talented defender and it's really no surprise that he went as high as he did. Hailing from the Czech Republic, Ketil is a big body wrecking ball at six foot three and 210 pounds, which he uses to absolutely crush his opponents on the ice. His defensive game is building up beautifully, hes a great checker, hes got an active, strong stick, and his defensive awareness is so strong, and he really sees the defensive side of the game in a fantastic way. Offensively, he's great at doing all the little things right, getting into the right places, and to make things even more interesting, he's got decent handles on the puck, and has a wickedly accurate shot. If he can improve on his speed and his checking, he will be a dominant force in both the SMJHL, and the SHL.

Round 2, Pick Number 27 - B Jobin is the son of future hall of fame goaltender A Jobin, and he tends the goal just like him too. Jobin has struggled this season to live up to his hype in the crease, but his raw numbers this season don't tell the full story. Being on a rebuilding team, Jobin is stuck behind a defensive squad that's still figuring itself out and developing, which has seen him faced with a lot of shots, typically facing on average about 40 shots a night, while also focusing on his own development. That said, the raw talent B Jobin possesses is enough to garner some excitement for his future in this league. B Jobin is a very athletic goaltender, very mobile in his crease, and almost always very strongly positioned in the net. His athleticism and flexibility also contribute to his ability to recover quickly after saves and get right back in place for a rebound. He needs to work on his stamina with a starter's workload, and still struggles facing shots high, but if he can round these hot, he's poised to go down as a fantastic Whalers netminder.

In conclusion, while very much still young and having plenty of room to grow, these 2 picks are absolutely going to be the cornerstones of Vancouver going forward, and eventually for their SHL squads as well. Alongside other young bucks like Capy Bara, Matthew McGarry and Benjamin Surkhi-Ze'ev, its only a matter of time before the Whalers return to SMJHL dominance.
