Howdy everyone, some notable changes are happening.

Starting in S66, players will only be eligible for the SMJHL for 4 seasons. At the start of S66, no [S63] or older may play in the SMJHL, no [S64] in S67, no [S65] in S68, and so on. The SHL Waivers that normally happen for a send-down after their fourth season will be removed.

We will be codifying this in the SMJHL Rulebook in the following ways:

• 3.b.i will be updated to read: All players begin their career in the SMJHL and remain eligible to play in the SMJHL for their first four (4) seasons after creation.
  
• 3.b.iv will be updated to read: SMJHL players may not apply more than 350 TPE for the first two seasons and 425 TPE for the third through fourth seasons to their attributes. If a player exceeds this criteria for TPE, they may bank the remaining balance and apply it later when they enter the SHL.
  
• 2.d.i will be updated to read: A player signed to a SHL contract may be sent down to the junior team to which they were most recently signed, provided they have at most 350 applied TPE for the first two seasons and 425 applied TPE for the third through fourth seasons and are in their first four (4) seasons from creation
  
• 2.d.vii.3 will be struck: “Players sent down to the minors after their first 3 seasons since being drafted into the SHL will be subject to waivers and can be claimed by any other SHL team.”
  

We have a few different reasons for this change. First, currently the only people who are primarily using this 5th season are either fully IA players, or people who explicitly want to stay in the J for as long as possible. Neither of these scenarios are what we are looking for when trying to uphold our primary goals of development and retainment. Admittedly, yes removing the 5th season does not immediately make IAs into actives, nor does it dissuade the infamous J lifers. However, it does begin to cut down on the people who, overall, are not what we wish to focus on. We know that many SMJHL teams rely on 5th season IAs to fill roster spots. But, we’ve looked at the available IFAs and view it possible to replace those 5th season players with numerous others in their 1st through 4th seasons. Secondly, this is only a small domino for other changes we hope to introduce for the betterment of the J. We have other ongoing topics, such as the SMJHL Free Agency process, the 350 & 425 TPE caps, as well as examining the health and activity levels of the J as a whole. By enacting this change we plan on moving the rest along as well, as each topic is intertwined with the rest.

Dumb

 or people who explicitly want to stay in the J for as long as possible. Neither of these scenarios are what we are looking for when trying to uphold our primary goals of development and retainment. Admittedly, yes removing the 5th season does not immediately make IAs into actives, nor does it dissuade the infamous J lifers. However, it does begin to cut down on the people who, overall, are not what we wish to focus on. 

I feel personally attacked

It's not that we hate you, we just don't love you. But in all seriousness, the only reasons we see the 5th season being utilized is for reasons outside of our overall goals. As such it made sense to us to remove it
