S65 PT #0: Close Encounters of the Sixty-Fifth Kind
#31

Sven looks up and sees hundreds, maybe even thousands of hockey games being played in front of his eyes. Somehow he's able to comprehend everything he's seeing and one player sticks out to him again and again: a man seemingly named Erik Karlsson. His long hair, his glorious mustache, the way he demands respect on the blue line both by laying players out and putting pucks in the net. Sven sees Erik Karlsson wear a variety of different jerseys throughout this strange flashback, but the quality of the play always remains the same. He wakes up and doesn't know if it's been 5 minutes or 5 years, but he remembers everything. He feels like he knows more about how to be an elite defenseman, and how to put the puck on net for once. This season is going to be a good one, one that really cements Sven's legacy as best Sven.

Written Task: Who is your team's parallel universe doppelganger? What team from this mysterious "NHL" is your SHL team most like? Why? Think more about team composition or stage of competitiveness in your upcoming S65, not just Calgary Dragons so Calgary Flames, you know? (150+ words)

The Calgary Dragons are the Calgary Flames hahaha

Just kidding

I think the team we most compare to in NHL would be the Chicago Blackhawks. Both teams are part of the 'Original 6' of their respective leagues and have a proud history and tradition. Like Chicago, the Calgary Dragons were once a very good team, even considered a dynasty not so long ago - winning Cups and always being a solid and competitive team. However, also like Chicago, the Dragons might have held on to their aging players out of loyalty for their contributions just a little too long. Players like Batsbak, Parmborg etc. are Dragons through and through and are fan favorites - comparable to players like Kane and Toews - so it is really hard to want to ship them out and I'm not saying we should have, but we definitely had to ship out younger players to keep them on the roster even though they were declining. However, also similar to the Blackhawks, the Dragons are now in a rebuild mode and looking to add more prospects through the draft and grow the system from within. It might take a few seasons but with some young promising players who are starting to take over important roles on the roster, or developing very well in the minors, there are reasons to be excited about the future even if the team currently is not expected to contend, in fact more likely to be a lotto team. Also, just like Chicago, there was a bit of controversy about the way the management treated some of the players which led to some bad press and publicity and definitely had an effect on how people throughout the league view the team. However, with new management in place the goal will be to turn that around and show the league that Calgary is still a great franchise and will be looking to be back on top before you know it!

For my signature, I use Jaromir Jagr, just because of the hair, but as for playing style, as a quarterback from the point, I say my doppelganger has to be #75 of the Edmonton Oilers, Evan Bouchard. Taking bombing shots from the point, a power-play specialist. I feel like the St. Louis Scarecrows are most similar to the Anaheim Ducks, because we are very young, have some intense talent, and are just making our way up the Cup Standings. Soon enough, the Scarecrows will have enough talent to be a contender for the SMJHL Championship, as the Anaheim Duck will soon enough be a Cup Contending team too!

I think the Vancouver Whalers of the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League are most similar to the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League due to the fact that while they have a deluge of young talent, there is a ways to go in terms of development before the Whalers and the Sabres can fully compete for a cup. Both the Sabres and the Whalers have similar prospects, like B Jobin and Ukko Pekka Lukkonen, Rasmus Dahlin and Miroslav ketil, Aleksandr Iskandrov and Dylan Cozens. Essentially both teams need to really nail their respective free agencies and drafts, and they should be on the upswing too for cup contention. Also, both teams are staffed by really really handsome general managers, kevyn adams and aleksandr aleksandrov. but I would go as far as to say that aleksandr aleksandrov is a teensy weensy bit more attractive, and a lot better at his job.

Hockey Prompt: Written Task

My head is spinning, my eyes are burning and I feel my pulse racing. Whatever that purple light was has left my head so full of knowledge that I need some time to figure out where I am. I have more information on this "NHL" than I do on the SHL, which scares me. I am suddenly comparing aspects of my game to people I have not heard of before and I have so many ideas that I need to add to my toolbox. I see the beaten-down body of a once-proud warrior named Shea Weber. A large man who is of similar size to me and has made a long NHL career out of being an elite shut-down defender. I see him in his prime as he doles out punishment to those fool-hardy enough to enter his vicinity. Cross-checks, slamming faces into the dasher and massive hits make this a player who none wants to play against and I fall in love with his playstyle. The offensive side of his game is nothing to sneeze at either. One of the hardest shots in history makes him a dangerous foe on the powerplay. I could learn a lot from this man and I am thankful for the purple light.

Hockey Prompt: Written Task: I feel like our team's parallel universe doppelganger is the NHL Washington Capitals. The reason I say this is because the Capitals have been a very good team in the NHL for pretty much the last decade and the same can be said about the Chicago Syndicate who have been a top team winning their last Challenge Cup in season fifty seven and then against in season sixty four. In between this time Chicago has continuously been a top two team in the western conference. Both teams having ageless wonders with Alexander Ovechkin on Washington and Martijn Westbroek on the Chicago Syndicate who just racked up the most points in the season sixty four playoffs. In addition, each of these teams have very high powered offensive players and underrated defense with some solid goaltending. Each of the teams have very experienced players with some young promising players. Finally you know both the Capitals and the Syndicate are going to be in the mix for cup contenders each season

As one can tell from Pinky's stats, he is definitely not a fighter.  However, there was one fight that he won.........allegedly.  This occurred when Rinky was playing minor hockey in small rinks in Western Ireland.  T%hose rinks only had glass, or, more likely mesh, at each end of the ice surface leaving the boards open.  At the time Rinky's team was playing another team that was "creatively physical".  An opposing player cross checked Rinky into the unprotected boards while he was digging out a loose puck.  Needless to say, Rinky was some pissed off, so he spun the other player around and prepared to perform a reciprocal action.  This was when Rinky discover3ed that his nose came to the bottom of Big Boy's shoulder pads.  Realizing that he was in trouble, Rinky closed his eyes expecting to see his very short life flash in front of them.  When suddenly he heard a loud "THWOCK" and Big Boy fell to the ice.  Mags, Rinky's girlfriend at the time had come down from the stands to board level and swung her long-strapped purse at Bib Boy.  She must have had her penny collection in there because he went down like a rock.  Rinky's fight remains legendary in Western Ireland, a fight he won.......alledgedly.  Or was it that wild purse slinging woman from The West......

Oof, this is a tough one for me. So lets say that I'm looking at the Detroit Falcon's doppleganger in another league. But instead of playing on ice with sticks this one plays on water with paddles. You can imagine how much harder this is due to the water constantly shifting below them. However, the teams have figured out a way to "run" on the water so they are still above at all times. The unpredictability of the water adds a huge variable to the game as the puck doesn't always react predictably after being moved. This leads to a ton of turnovers and most shots are wide of the target. To compensate for this - the goal is now 3x as wide and about 5 feet tall, but each team has 2 goalies to cover that space. It is a crap replacement for hockey as we know it, but I did not have any better ideas for this and just want to get this PT done as soon as possible.

Player prompt

If you've carefully followed Harry Carpet's career since the beginning - or just read the random media interviews that have come out - you might have heard about a weird "journalist" who calls himself Randolph Reporter. It started out quite harmless: the journalist, "Randy", was eager to report about this rookie goalie phenom Harry Carpet and as we all know: Harry does not like interviews. He does his very best to keep his private life private, but when he was young he didn't know any better and simply thought it was part of the job of a pro hockey player: answer dumb questions. A draft interview was normal, wasn't it? It didn't end there; Randy snuck into Harry's hotel rooms multiple times to get the latest exclusive "news" and ended up being known as his private stalker. Luckily, he got locked up, but we found out not too long ago that he's out again. That's about the weirdest thing that has happened in Harry's professional life (that we know of). Other than housing ex-SHL player Gunnar Söderberg-Tremblay as a ‘good luck mascot’ during the season 58 playoffs who ended up following the North Stars around and even baked blueberry pie for Harry, but that’s a story for another time.

Seamus O'Slapahan wasn't always known as O'Slapahan. His parents didn't just wake up one day on the date of their marriage and say "let's change our names so our son and other progeny can be great sportsball players". No, O'Slapahan was a Seamus creation ever since he got into writing hockey fan fiction and he didn't want his conservative parents finding out. You might say that writing fan fiction isn't a terrible thing but sometimes Seamus liked to get creative, if you know what I mean. Using hockey mascots things could get a little explicative and bloody. Now Seamus's parents didn't think this was an acceptable past time for the next great SHL player so they tried to censor him as much as possible. When Seamus learned that the O'Callaghan's were only looking for posts that matched his name verbatim he switched up his penname to go undetected. When he was finally ready to get drafted, he came out to his parents with an official name switch to his penname as an official screw you. He also printed off copies of every editorial he had ever written and had them rained upon his house before jetsetting off to the USA to go to the league of dreams.

Prompt 1: Lias stares into the purple void and he sees a lot of similarities between the league there and the league he is in here. There is a guy who plays for a team called the Montreal Canadiens who seems to look a lot like him, but that team was very, very bad the past season so Lias hopes his own team will have a little more success this year and going forward. Somehow, the purple void wouldn't show him stuff about the AHL or any of the junior leagues in this other universe, but he did learn a lot about a team that seems to have a lot in common with his future team, the Winnipeg Aurora. That team is the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings have been exceptionally bad in recent memory, but they have a bright future and one of the best prospect pipelines in the league. That's the parallel Lias really saw between a team in this weird "NHL" league and his own future team.

Hockey Prompt:
I know I will get flack for this but the best comparison for the Forge would be the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are situated in one of the toughest divisions in sports but manage to find some success. They have some young star talent just like Matthews, Marner, in Evil AllBran and Conner snooks. They have even more talent brewing in the minors just waiting for the chance to jump up. They do have some seasoned veterans on the team as well to round out the roster including the classic Spezza in Patrick Shepard. Perhaps the most thing they are tied to being like the leafs is they are able to pull some success from the regular season with their stars putting up some big numbers however come playoff time they share the same fate. Despite the regular season success the Forge and the Leafs both have not won a playoff series in the recent memory. Though the Forge are a much younger team they share the same beliefs of the fans that this year will be different!

Player Prompt:

Adelie's entire story is a little odd and quite farfetched. After all, he is an actual penguin who plays hockey. As such, everything about his existence is a little bit surreal and so we need to go back to young Adelie to find his strange story, a story not even his own parents believed. You see back home, there are these fairly large birds known as skuas. They are dirty, murderous fiends who feed on penguins, particularly baby penguins. They're about the size of a full grown Adelie as is known to carry off both adelie and emperor penguin babies. One day young Adelie was crossing the frozen wastes of his home and saw a small group of emperor chicks bravely fighting off a skua. He could tell they were tiring though as they huddled together tight and did their best to keep anyone from getting picked off. Adelie immediately rushed to their aid, scared off the skua, and escorted the chicks back to their nest. To just run in and face a skua like that would normally be suicide! No one believes him when he tells the other penguins his story. They believe he plays hockey though.

Prompt 1

After gazing into the abyss, Hans learned about this new and interesting hockey league. National Hockey league they called it (Which Hans thought it was weird since it involved 2 nations). After seeing all the teams and their trials and tribulations, it stuck out to him that the Minnesota Wild are every similar to his own Philadelphia Forge. Both are relatively new franchises that have seen some success here and there, but the cup eludes them. They also are in very tough divisions, that make it seem like the teams struggle during the regular season. Once playoff comes both teams seem to have big problems getting over the hump of the 1st round. Lastly it is worthwhile noting that The Wild, most like the Forge, had a really shit goalie until they recently acquired a Vezina winner. If the Forge can replace Scoochie with an elite caliber goalie, they are poised to make a deeper run into the playoffs
