Miroslav Ketil's Season in Review

The past season was rough for Miroslav Ketil, right-handed defenseman of the Vancouver Whalers, and it was even worse for the team as a whole. After being selected 3rd overall in the SMJHL Entry Draft, the expectations for the Czechian defenseman were sky high. The young defenseman is a talented puck mover and has a dangerous shot, for a defender. These traits in addition to his size and puck handling ability made him an enticing prospect that the Whalers felt they couldn't pass up, but the promise that he had didn't shine through as much as one would've hoped.

Ketil's numbers on the offensive side were lackluster, seeing the defender put up 23 points over the team's 66 game season, a majority of those coming from the power play. He scored just 7 goals, a mark that the young Czech player admits was lower than he had expected. Furthermore, despite some of his forwards scored in bunches, the assists didn't really start coming consistently for the young blue liner. Despite his power play time and bloated time on ice every game, he was only able to notch a helper 16 times.

Despite the subpar offensive showing, though, the young defenseman's defensive game was solid. Miroslav saw an elite TA to GA ratio of over 1.25, and blocked a decent amount of shots along the way as well. He also played heavily on the penalty kill, which is a good sign for someone who was seen as offensively gifted, but not necessarily as gifted in his own end. However, despite his 6'3" and 215 pound frame, the defender seemed very adverse to throwing hits, preferring his elite stick work to carry him to his second amongst rookies takeaway total. This all bodes well for the kid going into his second season.

Going into his sophomore season, Ketil hopes to achieve success on both ends of the ice, and become what he and the Whalers both expect him to be. All eyes will be on him as he sets out to prove his pedigree true.
