S65 PT #1: Inspiration

Written Task:  What activities, sports, or games do you have prepared for your group of kids to teach them the values your player lives by? Are you trying to do meaningful team building exercises with lessons that last a lifetime, or something stupid like trying to sneak the kids into the back door of a casino? Your call. Go wild. There's nothing like playing hockey at an outdoor rink, and Aksel works with the youth group and the Rage crew to book an outdoor rink for their event. They do the usual, the same things that Aksel did with the kids in Quebec City, but he's in the big leagues now so he gets a little more flashy. Redacted, who was nice enough to join, is more than happy to block all of Aksel's shots after letting the kids get most of theirs in. It breaks into kind of a scrimmage, and parents and passersby hop the boards to join - one who'd packed their goalie gear on the slim chance they'd be able to use it. One of the kids gets one past the dad goalie, a slick move between her legs, and they lift her into the air to celebrate. It winds down after that, some people heading home, others sticking around for pictures and autographs, but Aksel thinks it's a good start to the season.

Leading up to the start of the S65 season the pressure and nerves were definitely getting to Zayne Dangle. Playing in the SMJHL was a huge opportunity, but making it to the SHL was life changing. Everything he worked so hard for was coming to fruition. Standing in the tunnel before the first regular season game and his first time stepping onto the ice with the Stampede, the memories came rushing back. There were quite a few from when he was a kid. The one that sticks out was why he started playing hockey in the first place. He grew up with a single mother and was always getting into trouble. Going out and playing pond hockey with his friends was about the only thing that kept him out of trouble. It wasn't until he was in secondary school that he could play organized hockey for the schools team. From there on he vowed that he would work as much as possible to afford to keep playing.

Player Prompt

Marco Barengrub was born in Estonia, a country not well known to produce good hockey players. It's such a small nation and sports like soccer and basketball are way more popular with the young kids. But Marco never forget the first time he experienced a SHL hockey game. It was a pre season game between Toronto and Hamilton. He remember watching a clumsy defenseman named Ti-Guy Emond who was by far the worst player on the ice. But the guy could lay a hit, an Hamilton player went through the glass in the 2nd period and the game had to end. Marco tried to get an autograph after the match and Ti-Guy was the most surprised of the two. Emond ask why him? Young Barengrub explained to him it was his first ever hockey game and that hit was the most awesome thing he ever saw. A few days later, Marco started to learn how to skate and the rest his history.

Sophie Bordeleau's first inspiration to play hockey was from her dad, who had played hockey as a kid and always enjoyed it. Growing up in Quebec, pretty much every kid gets into it to start. Realizing that she had gifted vision and playmaking skills from a young age undoubtedly helped, but for Sophie, it was about community. Playing hockey was about being part of something bigger than herself, working with others towards a common goal. As she got older and realized that she could really go somewhere with her talent and drive, playing hockey evolved for her into something that made those around her proud; her parents would always support her regardless, and Jamie was her rock always since the two had met during the winter of Sophie's last high school season, but she felt pride at being able to not only represent her city on the big stage but also to play for the team close to where it all began. Pulling on that Citadelles sweater before every game, the team Sophie grew up watching, she thinks of all her hopes and dreams and the people that she's showing that they can achieve their biggest goals.

Player Prompt, written task:

Season 65 of the SHL is about to start and Yannick Svoboda is about to take the ice for the first time in his SHL debut. While the rest of his Panthers teammates spill out onto the ice, as they have all done so many times before, Svoboda takes a moment to reflect.

He can see an image in his mind, it was the first time he put on a pair of skates, back when he was still in Czechia. It wasn't until his 12th birthday when his family gifted him his first pair of skates. Knowing he had started quite late relative to his SHL counterparts, he never imagined getting to play at this stage. He can see his 12 year old self, filled with joy, gliding onto a frozen pond for the first time. That experience stuck with him his whole life, and he would go on to put those same skates on hundreds of times.

Svoboda feels a slight shove behind him, he realizes now that he is being told to get a move on and join his teammates on the ice surface infront of him. As he takes a step forward onto the ice, he feels like that same 12 year old that he had imagined moments ago. As he feels the ice surface beneath him, he knows his SHL career has just started, paving the way for the long journey ahead of him.

Quote:CREATIVE PROMPT- OK, that's a pretty sappy prompt. Maybe you want something a little more fun. Fine by me! Your player has gotten the opportunity to host a youth event at the start of this season to get the kids excited about the power of sport and the spirit of unity. Hurrah!

Written Task: What activities, sports, or games do you have prepared for your group of kids to teach them the values your player lives by? Are you trying to do meaningful team building exercises with lessons that last a lifetime, or something stupid like trying to sneak the kids into the back door of a casino? Your call. Go wild. The Carolina Kraken organized a youth event to be hosted by notable members of the Kraken squad. This season's youth even was led by second year players Aleksi Kettu and Pass Forfeit. These two got together with the rest of the Kraken squad and presented an idea to them about what they could do during one day of the week long camp that ended on the night of the Kraken home opener. With the team on board, something special was awaiting the kids later in the week, the day before the home opener. The kids at the youth event were each matched with a Kraken player that played the position that they wanted to play. The kids were then allowed to follow that player around all day through practice, workouts, meals, spending time alongside a professional to live "a day in the life." The kids had a blast, practice was lighthearted and involved a fair bit more "fun" drills than the team was used to.

I mean, my player is a bit of a different animal when it comes to things like this. His inspiration to become a hockey player goes back generations. While his dad and his grandfather were both goalies, and pretty good ones at that, his uncle Jax was like a bolt of lightning on skates at times playing as a center and it really lit up the game and made it that much more fun and exciting to Jesper.

You see, Jesper is a different person than the majority you'll come across in the SHL. There are families that have legacies in the SHL, but there just aren't many you'll find that are three generations deep and have so much history to draw on to help drive their passion for the game. Everybody in the family is dedicated to hockey, and if any weren't, it would probably be pretty awkward. Just about every story told around the dinner table is about traveling to some city for a game, hanging out with teammates, the old days, the newer days, the things they do or the things they did. It's nonstop, and it just fills you with that hope to one day have those stories of your own as well.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

Jasper grew up watching videos of his mom play for the West Kendall Platoon and hoped he would someday do the same. She taught him everything she knew and beamed with pride whenever her son would accomplish anything. He felt very similarly towards his mother and you could say the night where he went with her on the ice in West Kendall to see her jersey retired by the team cemented his will to one day play in the SHL. Today, he is at the peak of his career and wearing the same (almost) jersey he always dreamed of wearing. He may have his head in the clouds most of the time but he never took his career for granted and did his best to earn the same kind of respect Maria had when she was playing. Meeting little kids, and even grown adults, wearing his jersey is always humbling for him and hearing the cheers of the Platoon's fans when he steps on the ice makes him want to keep doing this until he is too old to be remotely useful to the team.

CREATIVE PROMPT-

What prompted Angus McFife to develop hockey skill was mainly swordmanship, courtisanship and a mystical paladin mentoring him to fight evil across the land of Dundee. @goldentglutes is always surprised when he sees Angus practice his slapshots with a glorious hammer made of steel. Who knew goblin smashing skills would transfer so easily to ice hockey. So yeah, Angus is good with a hammer and agile with a sword, nothing can stop him. He also played tennis during his youth, which developped his traking vision and body coordination. Nowadays, now that the chaos wizards are mostly all dead (in this dimension btw, probably there are still some elsewhere) it is harder to keep up with new techniques to fight evil and repel zombie unicorn invasions. So you have to be creative. Sometimes @burloogie lets Angus practice mysterious incantations and warding spells on him, in exchange from french lesson (courtisans loved the french!). So, these are the skills Angus transfered from his old life to the new life of being a hockey player.
