“I love to win, but I also can’t stand losing.” Jonathan Mercer looks up from his stall of the St. Louis Scarecrows locker room. Mercer and the St. Louis Scarecrows currently sit in 4th in the SMJHL, with twenty-two wins, eleven losses and 2 overtime losses over thirty five games currently.

Jonathan Mercer has helped by putting up 13 points over those 35 games, with 5 goals and 7 assists. As a rookie, these numbers are fairly average, leaving Mercer as a good value for where he was picked in the second round of the SMJHL Entry Draft this season.

However, that isn’t good enough for Mercer. The lights are bright in the locker room, as Mercer sits alone in the locker room. Looking at the logo and knowing the level of players that have played in St. Louis before, he knows that there is a lot of potential to do a lot of damage with this group. Dan Baltisberger has been on fire, scoring thirty nine points through the campaign so far.

Mercer was drafted 24th overall, and has done his part to be a good teammate and productive player within the SMJHL, which just means a lot of work. However, Mercer’s bank account is quite low for a player of his calibre which means he has to do a lot of media outreach and a lot of talking.

Mercer wasn’t always the one that wanted to play quarterback on the power play, Mercer started out of a young defensive defenseman who was a little timid in his own zone and lost of ton of battles growing up in midget / junior hockey, but slowly adapted his game over time to become a more offensive defenseman and be able to chip in on offense and play both ends of the ice effectively.

Mercer did a lot of review with the Scarecrows staff, and luckily has the reliance of older SHL defenceman who belongs to the SHL Hall of Very Good, Chris Crutchfield. Crutchfield has been a vital resource for the young Jonathan Mercer, and even though the recent players that have been managed by Crutchfield have fell through the wire and are large misses, Mercer has all of the tools in his toolbox to break that mold and build momentum to become one of the best SMJHL defencemen, and potentially a great SHL defenceman as well.

Will be become that? It’s only a matter of time until we find out.
