Stephan Gill - A life Story Pt2
#1

Well I hope enjoyed the first part of Stephan Gill’s life. Part one focused from birth to draft night. This part will focus on the day of the draft, through to the end of his rookie season & his eventual selection in the SHL draft. If you missed part one, please go and read it -> Stephan Gill - A life story Pt2

Draft Day

So it’s draft day, quite frankly Stephan most ferrying and exciting day of his life so far, even eclipsing the day his whole family emigrated across the pond to NY city. Stephan woke up rather early, clearly the nerves had started to set in. These nerves were a strnage sensation that he wasn’t really expecting. Stephan had done everything he could in his power to be in the best shape, demonstrated all of his skills and had done everything in his power to be drafted. The days at the combine, along with all of the other prospects seemed long ago.

The day started like you would expect, not much change to the routine, morning swim, breakfast, then set about the days training regime. Being the off-season, the wasnt that much focus on physical skills rather on fitness, strength all those typical physical attributes. As the afternoon approached, his Mother & Father, Sarah & Aaron started to prepare the house for the arrivals of guests. At this point Stephan was back in his Mum & Dad’s house post collage, they had decided there was no need to move out and look for rent as in no time at all Stephan could be moving anyway in the country. Most of the guest were either family members, close or distant, plus a selection of Stephen friends from collage. In all there were going to be around 30 to 40 people present. It later transpired that Stephan Mum & Dad were able to sneak a few of their friends in as well to boost that number close to the 50 mark.

As the day drew to a close, the party really started in earnest. Stephan Mum & Dad had provided a buffet fit for a king, the whole kitchen & dinning table had been converted into mountains of food, ranging from crab cakes, corn on the cob, burgers, crisps, chips. Stephans mum was forever saying “you name it & we’ll have it, with the odd exception.” At the start of the draft show, hosted by many members of the SMJHL community., Stephan sat in front of the TV ready to see his future unfold right in front of his eyes.

He really had no idea where he would be picked in the draft, it was unlikely to be the first round or the second. As the third round came and was progressing towards the end, he started to get worried, questions started to pop through his mind;
  • Had teams forgotten about him
  • Had he done something wrong during the combine days
  • Was he not good enough
  • Had he given his number wrong during the application.
All these questions started to bombarded his head, looking back on that’s evening, those questions were irrational and were based unfounded logic. Though the heat of the moment did get to him.

However all his fears were alleviated once his phone began to ring. Talls the GM of the Anaheim Outlaws was on the phone.

“Hello Stephan. This is Talls, I’m the GM of the Anaheim Outlaws. How would you like to become part of this great origination?”

Stephan just stood there, in joy. He wa elated, his dream had been fuilled. All those memories of the playing football back in the UK, athletic meets & eventually Ice Hockey. He thought of his mother, father, friends and all their sacrifices they’ve made to help Stephan reach this point in his life.

“Hey Stephan, are you there? Hello?”

“Ohh I’m sorry Sir, I was caught up in the moment. Yes I would love to come and play for the Anaheim Outlaws. I can’t wait to suit you and prove my worth to the team.”

“I’m sure you will. Everyone here is excited to welcome you to the team. Let’s get winning those games”

And so that was that, Stephan had been selected by the Anaheim Outlaws with the 41st overall pick in the 3rd round. Stephan was an Outlaw. So he did what anyone else did, looked for his cap. With the largest smile he’d ever done became an Outlaw then hugged his Mum & Dad. Found his friends and had one of the best parties that night.

Aftermath.

The next morning he woke up with a hangover, but couldn’t wait to see what his next stages in life would take him. Stephan sat up in bed, feeling the room spin a touch, well more than a touch, started to smile. He knew at the point that the hard work had only just begun. Downstairs the clear up had already begun, there was discarded can, bottles, paper plates everywhere. Many of the guest had stayed the night and could be found scattered around the house, in all corners, onto of sofa, under tables you name it.

Stephan had been told by his agent, Rebecca to expect some communication from you new team within the next week or so. These communication would be about contract details, arrival times, location, NDA’s all the extra work that goes into professional (sim) sport behind the scenes. The first stage in becoming a fully fledged pro, Rebecca told Stephan was to sign your rookie deal, at which point your in!!

Three days passed between getting drafted and the arrival of his contract details. Stephan was signed to a rookie deal of $2,000,000 for the year. This was more money than he had ever dreamed of earning. It certainly changed his whole life. As part of the signing deal, he was also given a bonus worth $2,000,000. $4,000,000 in a single year, he had made it. All those sacrifices were worth it.

Moving & Arrival Day

So the big day finally arrived & Stephan was ready to move to Anaheim for his new life in Anaheim playing professional hockey for the outlaws. A cross country flight from New York with relatively few possessions was deceived to be the best cause of action. The whole family flew with him to help set up the new home that Stephan had purchased, about 15 / 20 mins away from the training arena. The house was modest enough for a first home but still of a reasonable size. The idea was to use half of the signing bonus to buy / furnish the house whilst using the other half to live of for the year. With any money from his contracts / bonuses etc to be paid into a investment fund for the future.

Before the first day of training was due to start, Anaheim had put on several team building experiences for all the rookie. Ranging from sightseeing experiences, meals out with the current team to shopping trips. Their idea behind this was to start to bond the rookie, who would form the core of the team in a season or so from the start to really gel & get a super strong chemistry.

And so the first day of training arrived. Now the hard part of his life reslly had started.

I hope you all enjoyed reading part 2 of Stephan life story. Part 3 will focus on his first two seasons at Anaheim plus the SHL draft.
