The expansion Quebec City Citadelles had a very young but promising roster in their first season of existence. The Citadelles started building their roster off of the back of a strong expansion draft. Stan Q Next and Ryan Rieley were both great players for the Citadelles, playing four seasons with the club and were key contributors to their S58 Four Star Cup win. Juan-Hunna Pussent and Sven Gunnar were both traded for picks in later drafts to help keep new players coming into the system. The final pick was Alexander Roach, the only player on the team with much experience in the SMJHL. He ended up as the top line center, leading the team with 35 points and winning the Brandon Holmes award for best defensive forward. The initial group was good, but they needed some more players to fill out the roster. Quebec City did a fantastic job of doing exactly that in the entry draft. They had won the first overall pick, and used it to select Zdenko Beranek. The big Slovakian forward was a critical piece of the Citadelles elite forward group for a long time, winning the scoring title one season and playing a huge role in the Citadelles title run. He would go on to have a decent career as a member of the Montreal Patriotes. The Citadelles next started to form one of the best groups of blue liners the league had ever seen, picking Jasper Maximov and Teylora Petrov with their next two picks. Maximov was an elite two way defenseman who somehow never won an Agante trophy despite being one of the best defensemen in the league. Petrov was one of the best shut down defensemen in the league, winning the Metzler trophy for best defensive defenseman in her final season with the Citadelles before being called up to the New England Wolfpack. A few picks later the Citadelles grab an absolute enigma of a man in Boris Petrov. How Boris was allowed to play in the league is beyond me. With an unbelievable 791 penalty minutes and 986 hits, Boris Petrov inspired fear in the opposition anytime he stepped onto the ice. He would later return to Russia after being banned by the SHL from competing in their league. Despite this vicious play style, Boris was a fan favorite in Quebec City for his entire career there. The hits kept on coming for the Citadelles in the later rounds. Tres Sombreros was a 5th round pick but was a dominant player for the Citadelles. The Mexican phenom was the top scorer of the S58 cup run, and won the playoff MVP award in that same season. Sombreros was an unbelievably clutch player who could be counted on to score huge goals whenever the team needed him. Kev Kevens was the 79th overall pick and would probably be a top 10 pick in a redraft of this class. Kev was a dominant two way winger who excelled in all areas of the game. He and his partner in crime, free agent pickup William Salming, were glued to the ice anytime Quebec City needed a big penalty kill or a lead defended late in the game. The other big free agent acquisition in that initial season was goalie Mat Smith. He would eventually claim the starters crease for the Citadelles and was one of the best goalies the SMJHL had ever seen. Despite never winning a goalie of the year award, he still dominated for the Citadelles, and lead the team to their first ever playoff series win versus the Anaheim Outlaws in S55, and later would be lights out during the Citadelles S58 cup win, putting up a .939 save percentage with 5 shutouts. Quebec City did an excellent job of building a contender from the group up in that initial season, leading directly to a four star cup in S58.
