(GRADED)Deep Dive #1 - Steve Harrington, Mr. Game 7?

Steve Harrington has lived a long storied career in the Simulation Hockey League. After constant playoff struggles in his earlier years, the top earner from the S53 Draft Class had seemingly put it all together in the S60 Season leading the SHL in assists with 59 and coming 8th in points with 81. However, Harrington had one of the greatest moments in SHL history that season as well. Even though the moment may have only been noticed by a select few across the league it will no doubt go down in the SHL history books…

The Chicago Syndicate - Buffalo Stampede series in the finals was as storied as ever. The two were very familiar with one another after the numerous seasons the Syndicate spent in the infamous Great Lakes division. The series started off like a classic Rocky Balboa movie with the Chicago Syndicate seemingly outplaying the Stampede in every way possible. They eventually found themselves up 3-1 in the series with the Stampede staring down the barrel of a shotgun. The Stampede then managed to scratch and claw themselves back into the series, eventually tying the series up and forcing a Game 7.

With a Game 7 to end all Game 7’s and the Challenge Cup on the line, both teams fully understood what was at stake. The Stampede would get off to an early start with a goal from none other than our hero, Steve Harrington. This goal would quickly be answered by none other than Syndicate legend, Martijn Westrboek a couple of minutes later. Early in the 2nd period, Gunnar Soderberg would quickly score, putting the Syndicate up 2-1. But 6 minutes later, Harrington who had spent the early seasons of his career being a coattail passenger on the Stampede train, had found himself all alone on a breakaway, effortlessly putting the puck past Mat Smith and tying the game up once again. Fast forward to the middle of the 2nd period and Akira Ren would score, putting the Syndicate up a goal once again, but never underestimate the ability of a character from the Stranger Things, because once again Harrington would answer with a goal of his own, 5 minutes later. The Stampede would eventually end the game as Challenge Cup champions after 3 unanswered goals from the supporting cast, but there was no doubt who the real MVP was, none other than Steve Harrington with his hat trick heroics in what was probably the most important game in his career.

Fast forward to S65 and the Stampede had found themselves down in a hole yet again. Staring at a 0-3 deficit in the series, the Stampede were once more staring down the barrel of a shotgun against the Philadelphia Forge. Although far less entertaining than the previous game that we covered, this one would once again end in a 2-1 victory for the Stampede with our hero, Steve Harrington scoring the game winner.

This game got me curious. Was Steve Harrington a clutch performer? Could he possibly be the SHL’s answer to Justin Williams (AKA Mr Game 7 in the NHL). Sure he may not have the same record as him, but could he have the stats to speak up for his performances? So I took a deep dive into Steve Harrington’s career and his performances in Game 7s throughout his career to check for myself.

In conclusion, maybe my hypothesis was a little carried away by 2 stellar performances, but overall a point-per-game in a stressful playoff game 7 is nothing to scoff at. Harrington has always been a consistent player throughout his career and it remains to be the same case in the playoffs.
