HERE COME THE IRISH
The banner said it all. The Irish squad was going to be announced as participants in the S65 International Ice Hockey Federation tournament. There was a small podium in the corner with a single microphone looking like something from a different time that would be needed in a different place. It was never going to be used for this occasion.
As people started to stream into the room, each was handed a sheet with the names listed in stark green ink. Just a list of names and the nationalities for each player followed by their professional team.
As those who were present looked around the room, they saw a table in the back, it was covered with pints of Guinness, small glasses of Jameson whiskey and plates of sandwiches. Almost as soon as people realized the Irish were going to have a team, mobile phones were whipped out, phone calls were made, texts were sent, word was getting out. The sharing of the messages was quickly followed by the downing of the Guinness and Jameson.
The music started to play and even though the nationalities didnt match, it seemed like a perfect fit, AC/DC boomed out as the lyrics of "Thunder Struck" reverberated around the room.
The list was simple and presented a team that included some other nationalities, but it was obvious they were pleased to be skating for the Irish.
D: Ruggs McOoooh from the San Francisco Pride D: Billy Brooks from the Buffalo Stampede D: Guy O'Shea from the Hamilton Steelhawks D: Seamus O'Slapahan from the Nevada Battleborn D: Keith Lee from the Toronto North Stars D: Edge Rocks from the Vancouver Whalers (F playing out of position)
Former Players: Yoshimitsu McCloud (LW, #64) - Won a Four Star Cup once, knew ninjutsu, picture editors hated him, never tried free agency
Anton Harrier (LW, #90) - Won WJC gold, liked skateboarding a lot, went to the finals with Manhattan, kept his seat glued in LR
