The Death of Phillip Weaver
#1

**Warning Reader Discretion Is Advised** This is not a fun story, it is a depressing end to my first player after over a year of inactivity. RIP Phillip.

This is the story of the man formerly known as "Fearless" Phil. As a young man Phillip was a highly touted goaltender, with the world as his oyster. Unfortunately for him, a slew of bad decisions turned this once goalie of the future into a shadow of his former self. It all started during his midget hockey playing days. Although his mother had concerns of putting her son in hockey, his insistence and his obvious talent made her concede. In the later stages of his life, his mother would unfairly blame hockey for his bad decisions but in reality it was just him, he would have made those same bad decisions whether he played hockey or not. During his time in midgets, when he was already being watched by SMJHL scouts is when he had his first experience with drugs and alcohol. At the time it was harmless, going out on Friday nights, bag of weed, case of beer, it was just harmless fun that the majority of teenagers have. Fast forward a couple years and Phillip was on top of the world, married to a beautiful woman, 1 kid with another on the way and he became a 1st round draft pick for the brand new Nevada Battleborn. Simply put life couldn't be any better for Phillip. It was that first season in the bright lights of Vegas when his downward spiral began. He gained a taste for the night life on the strip. He would regularly be out until just before morning practice, drinking, gambling and just having what he thought was the best time ever. How was he able to stay out all night and still make it to practice you ask? Cocaine. It was during this time when he was first introduced to that terribly addicting, life altering substance. His teammates didn't seem to notice his newly found bad habits. He was always a pretty high energy guy, very vocal, loud and would always have something to say about anything. So as the year progressed, so did his reliance on the drug. Lucky for him though he kept it under wraps, as after that season he became the first goalie taken off the board at 19th overall by the Tampa Bay Barracuda and everyone thought he was going to be a star goalie for Tampa Bay for a very long time. He played another 2 seasons in juniors for the Battleborn and everyone on the outside looking in saw a talented young man with all the ambition in the world. Even his self proclaimed best friend and wife knew nothing of the secrets he was hiding. It was during his 3rd season starting in net for the Tampa Bay Barracuda is when all his lies, and secrets started to come out. His wife, who had long been suspicious of him, finally confronted him with proof of his repeated drug use and infidelities, and he could deny it no longer. She left him and took the kids and after that it was very apparent how broken of a man he truly was. He stopped trying to hid his addictions from his teammates and would routinely show up for games and practices high as a kite. At the end of season meeting, Tampa's management told him that he needed to enter a rehab program in order to stay in their organization. As the stubborn man he was, he told Tampa Bay's management team (who by this point had treated him like gold and only wanted to do what was best for him) to go fuck themselves and that they would regret putting him in this position. So that summer he called up Tampa's biggest rival, the Baltimore Platoon, and convinced their gm that Tampa had treated him poorly (although they hadn't) and he wanted to stick it to them by winning a Challenge Cup with the Platoon. The rest of the league had no clue about Phillip's off rink issues and were thrilled and signed him to a deal. Although after he showed up to his first practice with Baltimore right fucked up and tried to start a fight with the Platoon's starting goaltender Luca Del Vecchio, Baltimore promptly cut him to save face. Now Phillip Weaver had no SHL job, no wife, and no contact with his kids, this is when he finally realized that he needed help. He voluntarily entered himself into a rehabilitation facility. He spent the next 2 years cleaning himself up and then the year after that working out and training in hopes of making a return to the SHL. That summer before the start of the S64 SHL season, the Calgary Dragons called him up and offered him a 2 year deal to back up their starting goaltender. Phillip jumped on it and as far as he was concerned he was back and ready to tear up the league. He ended up playing 16 games that season and posted 7 wins and a .922 save percentage. However in his second season with the Dragons, Phillip fell back into his old ways and his 4 wins and 4.03 goals against average reflected on his poor life decisions. The Calgary Dragons (and no one else for that matter) did not offer him a second contract and "Fearless" Phil fell off the face of earth. It was over a year later when he was finally found. Found dead in a crack shack, overdosed and unrecognizable to anyone who knew the former star goalie. In the end he died broke and alone. So to all those young men who think it'd be cool to party and do drugs, just remember the story of "Fearless" Phil, the once star goalie, turned junkie and just say no. Drugs are bad.
