This was one of the most dominating seasons in SMJHL history. We had some good seasons in the past, like the S63 Newfoundland Berzerkers who had a point percentage of .0894. However, only one team managed to break a point percentage of .900, with .009 more, and it was the Detroit Falcons. They finished the season with a 59-5-2 record. It’s quite impressive, only 7 defeats in the whole season, and two of those in overtime? Might as well be 61-5-0 it would pretty much be the same thing. Let’s not lie to ourselves, this was a season 4 years in the making. It was the peak moment. The sweat and tears of their general manager and the players on the ice.

They had a few key players for their cup run this season.

First of all, we have Ivan Lacksamus, a New England Wolfpack prospect, from the S62 draft in the SMJHL. He was the heart of this team this season. In 66 games, he played an average of 19:35 minutes, scoring 46 goals and netting 48 assists for a season of 94 points. He also demonstrated he was a threat in the playoffs, where he had 5 goals and 15 assists for 20 points in seventeen games.

Second is winger Eddie Creller, a Calgary Dragon prospect drafted in S61 by Anaheim, before making his way to Detroit in the last 2 seasons. Creller followed closely Lacksamus with 88 points, 36 goals and 52 assists for 17:55 minutes of ice time, which is quite impressive. However, Creller had a blast in the playoffs, where he scored a whopping 14 goals and 10 assists to finish one point behind the top pointer Bubba Tree.

All teams need a stud on the blue line in order to be sure to be able to compete. That player was New England Wolfpack prospect Moritz Seider, recently traded to the Quebec City Citadelles. He carried the team on his back, with the help of Johhny Patey this season. Seider had 14 goals and 48 assists, for 62 points, played an average of 23:19 minutes per game and landed 81 big hits this season. In the playoffs, Seider kept his good work with 13 points and 22 hits in 17 games.

The most interesting fact about their run last season was probably the goaltending duo. Both Evert Jansson and Toms Zile both played a big part of the season, splitting it almost perfectly. Both goaltender had good stats, with Jansson being slightly preferred during the season with 37 starts. Both finished above 0.910 save percentage in the season. This allowed Jansson to be quite fresh during the playoffs, where he had to go up to the last moment to win the cup. Jansson played 15 of the 17 games of the playoffs, finishing the race with one shutout and a save percentage of 0.906.

It’s quite an interesting fact to see that most pieces that the Detroit Falcon had last season were old players that were present to dominate. Gearing yourself with veterans seems to be the way to go for a cup run and Detroit didn't move away from this. They grew their talent, took their time, and were rewarded by the big trophy all hockey players dream of.
