(GRADED) Deep Dive #1 - Maine's Berserker Problem

Halifax Raiders (HAL, HFX)
Way back in Season 25, a new expansion team showed up known as the Halifax Raiders. They did fairly well considering their new presence in the league and under the leadership of vbottas17, their founding General Manager, they achieved 2 Four Star Cups out of 3 finals in 8 seasons (S26 vs Kelowna Knights & S30 vs Prince George Firebirds). As leadership changed throughout the seasons their record dwindled down to that of an average team, never achieving another Four Star Cup since S30. They made the playoffs about 60% of the time but were never really in a position of contention since.

Lethbridge Lions (LBL)
In Season 45, another expansion team showed up known as the Lethbridge Lions. Their start was mediocre and riddled with managerial inattentiveness for the first few seasons, resulting in their entire leadership being fired and replaced. JNH took the reigns in S49, giving it the attention it needed and rebuilding from nearly nothing. Soon, in S52, the decision was made to rebrand to distance themselves further from the failed Lions' short-lived legacy, turning into the Newfoundland Berserkers.

Newfoundland Berserkers (NL)
The Berserkers really began to shine in this new era. In the 14 full seasons since its rebranding (S52 - S65), NL has made it to the Four Star Cup finals 8 times, winning 5 cups overall. They also placed 1st in the league in 5 of those regular seasons. They've won against a multitude of opponents and often with overwhelming force, winning 12 of 13 finals games played in the S62 - S64 stretch where they won 3 cups straight. This newly-welcomed and crazy dominance made them enemies with several teams, but none more so than Maine/Halifax.

Maine Timber (MET)
In Season 53, Halifax attempted to rejuvenate the team with a rebrand into the Maine Timber. This came with little success, hardly moving from their average league position as Maine compared to post-vbottas17 Halifax.

What really stands out, however, is how much they've been shut down by the Newfoundland Berserkers. In the 13 full seasons since its rebranding, MET has qualified for the playoffs 10 times. They never won a cup, but more amazingly 9 of those 10 defeats were at the hands of Newfoundland. That's 90 percent. NL has been the reason MET was knocked out of the playoffs 90% of the time! And of those 9 rounds, Maine scraped together 9 game wins. That means their average playoff record as MET vs NL is 1 - 4. Talk about a one-sided rivalry.

Seeing as Maine has struggled with this for over 10 seasons now, it may not be surprising to continue to see Berserker dominance over the Timber unless big changes are made to significant aspects of the team's management and strategies both on and off the ice. I personally don't know what they would be, but a study of Newfoundland strategy may be called for by Maine to overcome this titanic foe and even possibly emulate the playoff success their opponents have been achieving once they've knocked Maine to the side on their way to the top.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”

The nice thing about the past, is it doesn't actually exist in the present.
