S66 SMJHL PT #6 - Playoff Dreams
#16

Well, going into the S66 SMJHL Playoffs. The Anchorage Armada won 11 of their last 14 games to power their way into a solid looking, if close first rounder against the Maine Timber. It was the perfect practice to run into the lead up for a deep run. Getting hot, beating Vancouver, Nevada, and Quebec (Twice) during said run.

For my part, August Von Hecht has increased his level of play as of late. Snagging wins left and right, even shutting out Great Falls on route to 29 wins as a rookie. Lord Zomp and Edward Elric both had over 30 goals and the trio of them plus Luka Magic lead the way in points at 77, 69, and 73 respectively. The team rounded into playoff form as a VERY physical team as well. With all but 4 players topping 100 hits. All of this as the Armada sail into the forest to make kindling out of the Timber. Winning the season series 4 to 2 also has to bode well for a playoff best of 7.

Being the top team in the regular season we in Nevada got the bye week during round 1 of the playoffs, which can easily be a death sentence for a team if you decide to play around and not take things seriously. Luckily, we have an amazing coach who put our tails to the grind right away and practice was the same as if we had a game every single day. We have been working on every aspect of our game to really hone things in right as we get into the playoffs and we will need it against a very strong Newfoundland team who already has upset a top seed in this playoffs. So the biggest thing for us has been to treat playoffs like we did every game in the regular season, practice our ass off, and just go one game at a time to get to where we need to be. Which hopefully is lifting that cup at the end of the season but if not we're going to fight like hell the whole way.

A lot of rumblings in Anchorage about the possibility of the run in the playoffs. There is a lot of optimism with the team about what we can do this year. With the amount of talent we have in one line, all we need is for those 3 dudes to get hot and we can go all the way. We have a lot of role players that have to understand what their job is on the team and understand that if everyone does their part, we can really cause some upsets.
We are taking that underdog mentality with us to every game, we know that most people are counting us out. We have a lot of rookies and young guys who want to prove it. Whether it is proving it to Anchorage and their teammates or maybe bringing their draft stock up by proving it to the SHL GMs who are going to be in attendance for these matchups.

Going into the postseason, the Armada chose to focus more on strategy over anything physical. While some teams ramped up practices and went until they physically broke down, Anchorage opted to taper back on the physical aspect of the game. Gym sessions and heavy contact were rolled back a bit in the hopes the team would freshen up and feel good for the playoffs. This late in the season many players are beat up and nursing small injuries, so the last big “push” so to speak was primarily focused on trying to recover and heal so everyone could be at or near full strength. Lots of time was spent on the little technical details and watching tons and tons of film to make sure the team was mentally and tactically 110% prepared for the playoff grind. And of course, the team watched a bunch of their own highlight videos and the movie Miracle to hype themselves up for a playoff run.

When the timber qualified for the playoffs, boy did we have to work hard. All we did was work on the play in the defensive end. Afterwards, we also worked on conditioning. Many times late in a game this season, we allowed the other team to sneak goals in when we really shouldn't have. It has been quite rough for us to hold on to leads late in the game. We typically have done well against the extra attacker, scoring many times on an empty net. However come to about 5 minutes left in the the third period is when we typically have fallen apart. We seem to play as if we have already won even though there are five minutes left. During that last five or so minutes we let up not one but usually two goals and don't even make it to playing in overtime. This season we definitely were a strong offensive team, lighting teams up for over 10 goals multiple times, but when it came to the tight squeaker games, we let those slip through our hands. Those situations were what we focused on for the playoffs this season

We have prepared for the playoffs by continuing our traditional preparation game plan. Why change what's been working? We are already in the groove with our current routine. This consists of practicing on our off days while rotating cardio and weightlifting workouts later in the day, morning skates on game days to get our blood flowing and to help calm the nerves, morning breakfast as a team, and then a team meeting to go over strategies for the game. We like to keep a heavy load as it makes things feel more natural. We found if we skipped practices we started to feel less in the game right away and it took away time during the game where we would have to find our mojo. Doing all of this together also helps build team chemistry. We do everything together and we just feel like a big family. Not just the players, the coaches, management, trainers, equipment managers, etc....

Bohdan and the Falcons did not make playoffs this season. He enjoyed going back home to see his family and friends. He has never been away from them for so long. The arrival at the airport, seeing his family in person was such a relief. All the stress from his first season just disappeared. For the first couple weeks, he just lounged around. Enjoying his time, going for walks to the market etc. As the summer progresses he will begin his training for next season. You have to keep it light and fun though. He arranged a road hockey game with the community. People brought out food and drinks. Even had a sound system set up. To make it even more fun Bohdan strapped on some pads and made a ridiculously awful attempt at playing goal. This was all about getting a mental reset, and getting ready to come back stronger for the next season. Looking forward to getting back on the ice, and seeing what next year holds in his growth.

There's only one way to properly prepare for the playoffs when you are a member of the Anchorage Armada, aka boat gang, for the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League, and that is the beer olympics. Let's be real, the playoffs can be the grandest time or the worst time, depending on how it goes, but we can all agree the beer olympics is fun no matter what. So what takes place during the festivities? Well number one, slip and slide flipcup, quite possible the best beer game of all time, following that you have the classics like beer pong and regular flip cup, toss in some drunken cornhole and you won't be walking out on your own two feet. To add to the competition, two captains are chosen and then drinking teams are chosen from there, so it's a great start to the playoffs, really gets the competitive juices flowing.

I think that we've been preparing for the playoffs for a while now in Nevada. We won the Laurifer Trophy after an incredible regular season that saw us go on a win streak for the ages at one point. We have some excellent veteran players that have had great seasons and really led the way for the Battleborn. Rookies such as Paul Peterson and myself have done our best to help solidify the team and I feel that when you combine all of elements involved you get such great results. We've know that we would be playing postseason hockey for a while now and have been focusing on improving as much as possible in practice so that we're ready for this moment. Now that we're playing postseason hockey we can't take anything for granted. It's a brand new season and we'll need to be on top of our game. There's a strong confidence among our team and we definitely have aspirations to bring the 4 Star Cup to Las Vegas.

Unfortunately the Detroit Falcons did not make the playoffs. However this does give some quality vacation time to the players, in which they can enjoy themselves after a long hard season. Due to this The Terrence decided to head out to Europe, and explore the continent. He first goes to England where he drinks some tea and watches football at Old Trafford since Terrence is a Man United fan. Unfortunately Man United disappoints again and loses 4-0 to Brentford (Fml). After this he goes to the countryside of Italy to experience the culture, and ends up taking a boat to Greece to soak up the sun. After that he flys up to the Scandinavian country’s where he Snowboards and meets some nice people. He then takes a flight to Germany, where he drenched himself in beer. After all this he decided to go back home and take a nice long nap in his bed.

clearly we were suprised to even be there between you and me i think some of our boys got a little too drunk they were smoking all the meat they were crashing around the lockeroom and well i think it really did effect our preformance to say the least. As fast as we got into the playoffs we were thrown out. Personally Otter will be by the sea eating fresh fish daily (going to need that protien for training after all) prepping for a scary upcoming season where our veteran in net will no doubt be moving up. Looking forward to a season with alot more on our shoulders both glory or shame. im sure Otter will be requesting a little time off from his GM for some much needed R&R otter bodies wernt built for the all of this ice after all, however next season he may well prove that to be false.

The team was coming off a great season, scoring a ton of points and having many people putting up career years. The preperations were immaculate. We spent a ton of time strategizing and looking at our opponents while training really hard in the last two weeks before playoffs to really make sure we can handle a strong push - but it was not meant to be. Running in to the hottest goalie in playoff history pretty much sealed our fate. Offense was firing on all cylinders, but it was impossible to break through that insane wall of doom that Newfoundland put up. The better team lost, but the playoff MVP has pretty much been decided already.

For next season, we are going even deeper into our preparations while looking to maintain a good record in the regular season. We can not give up just because we lost in the first round. We will be back, stronger than ever.

We have a bit of a different way of preparing for playoffs on the Rock. First of all, our practices are complelty optional. It's not uncommon to show up to s practice to only 3 or 4 dedicated players. The rest of the b'ys feel like they are good enough and don't need to practice. Second, every player makes it there goal to get as messed up as possible every night before the game. In fact, it's not uncommon to have some players as healthy scratches because they show up still feeling the affects of the night before and can't even get themselves dressed. Finally, every win is celebrated like it's a game 7 cup win. You thought the players were in rough shape after other nights out? You should see them after a win. It's a site to behold. Come to think of it, maybe all these correlate with our playoff (lack of) success.
