Task 5
After the San Francisco Pride’s early, unfortunate, and depressing exit from the playoffs this season at the hands of the Seattle Argonauts and known bully Willie Miller, the Pride’s GMs, coaches, and veteran players all met to figure out what needed to be done in order to prevent this from happening again in the future. The team decided that a new diet plan needed to be implemented to keep the skaters in prime hockey shape, as a few of them were looking a bit thick around the middle. While a big booty may be in vogue it does hamper one’s hockey abilities. To that end the team hired a dude named Large Edward, who started making the players his own special blend ‘protein’ shakes for the players to consume at lunch time. No one really knows what goes into these things, except that Edward spends a lot of time measuring various unknown powders into the shake mix. One thing for sure is that the players are looking a bit more trim and seem to have enhanced their hockey abilities. Good thing the SHL doesn’t have a drug testing program. (189 words)

Task 2
a. Maybe I’m a little bitter, being on one of the lower seeded teams that Seattle kicked out of the playoffs, but I’m rooting for Atlanta, and I think they win the cup. While Seattle can be proud of their cinderella performance, I think it ends against the inferno, who are easily the better team. (54) words
b. Miller is easily the #1 candidate for playoffs MVP, regardless of how this series ends, and it's well deserved. But he has to be tired at this point and I think Atlanta’s goal will be to simply wear him out by keeping him on his toes. Who cares about shot %, eventually the puck goes in. Seattle really needs to step up the rest of their game so they aren’t relying on one person to keep them afloat.(77 words)
c. This is where Atlanta wins it. Even against a MVP goalie performance, you can’t stop them all and Atlanta has the perfect squad to put a crack in that wall. Seattle really needs to work on keeping Atlanta on the other end of the ice and maybe Miller will be able to keep his composure for one more series. Atlanta just needs to keep doing what they are doing. (69 words)
d. Maybe I’m a bit of a broken record, but this is good for Atlanta, not Seattle. Scoring during even strength is a lot more reliable and sustainable than getting your points on the powerplay. Kudos to the Argonauts for taking advantages of the chances they are given but I’ll take boring ES scoring over the much less reliable PP points any day. (62 words)

Task 1: (3 TPE)

Verification: Strongo

Task 2: (4 TPE)

a. I'm not sure many people would have seen this coming. Two teams that joined the league at the same time, both making the finals and competing against each other for their franchise-first cup. So... who do think wins it all? The first time to the Challenge Cup Seattle Argonauts, that have been dismantling higher seeded teams through their entire playoff run? Or the President's Trophy winning Atlanta Inferno that are back with a vengeance after a S64 Challenge Cup defeat?

Atlanta, all day. I can't trust teams like Seattle who luck their way into the finals on the back of a goalie playing out of their mind. Eventually the dam breaks and it's usually in the finals when everything is ramped up to 100. Atlanta is the far superior team and they have the advantage of not being caught off guard by the underdog. They've seen what Seattle can do and there is no looking past them because they are the final hurdle. Atlanta will win comfortably. (87 words)

b. You can't talk about Seattle's run without talking about the dominant performance of starting goaltender Willie Miller, who has posted a .935 SV% heading into the finals. If your Atlanta, how do you solve this brick wall? If your Seattle, what do you do to make sure your guy stays hot?

Atlanta just needs to stick to their game plan and add some net front presence and they'll be fine. Miller is on a hot streak, but won't catch the Inferno off guard. They're going to throw everything at Miller. Also, Miller is bound to be exhausted from the amount of work he's had to do up until this point. Fatigue will play into Atlanta's favour. Seattle needs to try and give Miller some rest, but all they can try and do is block as many shots as possible. (88 words)

c. Atlanta's big storyline is their incredible depth. They have eleven players that have logged 10 or more points so far in the playoffs. If you're Seattle, how do you try to contain three lines of unending offensive pressure? If you're Atlanta, how do you ensure everyone is able to continue to contribute against such a stellar defense?

Atlanta doesn't need to change a thing. Keep rolling your lines the way they have because they're just better than Seattle. They will control play and give them fits trying to defend them. Seattle hasn't really done a good job containing anything in the post-season, they've just relied on Miller to save them each game. I don't think that is a recipe for success in the Challenge Cup Finals. Atlanta shouldn't adjust their game plan, they're good enough to take this and their depth is the key to that. (89 words)

d. Seattle's powerplay has been on fire contributing 14 goals up to this point, which comes out to almost 30% of their goals scored (50G total) in these playoffs. Atlanta on the other hand have only managed 5 power play goals, which is only 5% of their scoring (59G total). In your opinion-- is this a good thing for Seattle, or a good thing for Atlanta? Maybe a good thing for both? Do you think a dynamic team like Seattle that can capitalize on so many of their PP chances will lead to Atlanta playing scared-- worried about what might happen if they enter the box? Do you think a relentless Atlanta team that is so flush with even strength scoring is going to be too much for Seattle to take?

Most of the game is played at even-strength so I give the advantage to Atlanta. They're going to be too good at even-strength for Seattle which will result in Seattle playing keep up the whole time. They'll need power plays just to stay in the game. Both teams are on an unsustainable rate for and against PP goals so I anticipate it coming back to the mean. Give me the team that's way better at 5-on-5. (76 words)

Task 5: (3 TPE)

This season didn't go as planned after winning last season. After our end of season team meeting we decided that we needed a secret weapon for next season. We were all tasked to come up with one and bring it to training camp when the time comes. I think I have mine...

I want to secretly pump laughing gas into the visiting teams' locker room during the pre-game and each intermission. Nothing crazy, but just enough to get them feel slightly groggy. They won't know what's happening and it can be repeated for every home game because the away teams will just think the team is tired from a night out or whatever. They won't be actively trying to figure out what's going on so we can keep doing for every home game. It is cheating? Unethical? Sure, but we've already won the Cup fair and square, might as well try and have some fun now. We'll have to throw a couple of games at home to keep the flies off us, but I think I have the perfect secret weapon for next season.

(184 words)

Task 6: (3 TPE)

I think a fun curse to have in this league is that no league MVP ever wins the Challenge Cup in the same season.

Winning the Ron Mexico Trophy is something every player wants. It's a sign that all your hard work paid off. It means you're the best of the best. However, if you tie into winning it with not winning the Cup in the same season, it may give some players pause about wanting to win it. This would especially be true for the players who have not won a Cup yet. You want to play well to help your team win, but you're also superstitious. Do you hope that someone else plays better and takes the award? Do you bribe the awards committee to vote against you?

There would also be players that I'm sure would love the honour of breaking the curse. Be the player that wins MVP and then the Cup, but what if it never happens? At a certain point, curses are real. Who are you to break it?

a. Fair play to the Argonauts for making it this far, they absolutely obliterated my bracket that had San Francisco making it all the way here. But I just don't see a world where this isn't Atlanta's. They have the perfect balance of youth, experience, strength in depth, and they've been here before and are hungry to right the wrong of S64.
b. Miller has been absolutely sensational in this postseason. His goals saved above average is nearly double second place Elizabeth Doyle, and his save percentage is also way higher than anyone else's. Seattle is going to need him to carry on this godlike form, because if he regresses to the .887 he had in the regular season for even a second, they're going to be cooked. He's going to be tested early. Start strong and you have a chance to carry momentum.
c. I mean, the last prompt literally discussed the main way to shut down Atlanta. Unless your defense is stupid levels of deep you aren't slowing them down on the ice head to head, you're gonna need the guy back there to play in the form of his life. Miller was OK, not great during the regular season and has been dynamite in the playoffs. They need playoff Miller to survive.
d. It's the playoffs. Anyone who's watched even five minutes of a playoff hockey game knows that the whistles are placed in the pocket the entire time, because refs are scared to enforce the rules because "it changes the game." Lax officiating should benefit Atlanta more as they are not as reliant on the whistle to give them chances.

Could any SMJHL team in history (if they were NOT capped at their usual 350/425 builds) have beaten any SHL team in history a 7 game series? Why or why not? What historical teams do you think are good candidates for this trial? Who do you think is the best team in SMJHL history and the worst team in SHL history? Would the J team have a chance? Make your case!

If they weren't capped at 350/425, I genuinely think a fair few good SMJHL teams that could beat the two cellar dwellers this season: the Edmonton Blizzard and Minnesota Monarchs. This particularly goes for the Blizzard, who somehow saw being in Edmonton as not punishment enough and wound up winning 5 games of 66. Looking at the team's TPE totals, outside of the trio of Brian Davenport, Bas O'Bigbers, and Kyle Sutton (two of whom are retiring), you would take one look at this team and realize it would not be out of place in the J - in fact, Justin Time, a Blizzard prospect taken 5th in the S64 draft, would be fifth on this team in TPE, and would only be one TPE short of fourth. Can we really say that that team, which iced multiple 155s and plenty of uncapped players, would beat the Newfoundland dynasty, or last year's Falcons? I'm not so sure the answer is yes. They've got a lot of talent in the pipeline, though, so I'm going to stop dumping on them.

6. Written, 3 TPE, Curse (150 words min.)
We’ve heard of the “President’s Trophy Curse” in which the top team of the regular season has a very hard time closing the deal in the playoffs and often ends up losing. If you could invent a curse and attach it to any other league event– what would it be and why? No Challenge Cup winner shall ever repeat? Anyone who wins the goal scoring title is doomed to 4% shooting next season? Get creative and give your curse a fun name!
If it were up to me I would simply curse great teams that overreact to some bad playoff series by tearing down the foundation. Listen, we all know playoffs are voodoo, weird shit happens all the time and we mostly have them because they're good theater more than anything (and in real life, revenues). It's a small sample. Sometimes you just get a team that's a bad matchup for you, or you have a badly timed injury, or some role player pops the hell off (never forget we were one game away from Conn Smythe Trophy winner Fernando Pisani). But there's been plenty of times where management overtinkers and screws up the chemistry, maybe not in the SHL, but definitely in real life. A good case in point from real life would be...well, basically everything the Blackhawks have done since 2017, when they overreacted to a sweep by Nashville.

I would call it the Knee Jerk Jinx.

Plugging Los Angeles Panthers into an anagram generator creates some tough to work with team names. I guess the best of the worst is the one I landed on, which is the Toneless Phalangers. As it turns out, a phalanger is a sugar glider and if you've ever seen one of them they're pretty cute. So I guess transitioning from a Panther to that would be a little better received than a logo with a 1 gallon pail between some parenthesis or phenolase from an apple strangling things? (I don't know guys, the results were really weird on this one). The biggest downside is I learned California doesn't allow sugar gliders in the average household, so I guess that's what makes them toneless? They're just kind of there and people have to deal with it and watch those cute little flying squirrels do their thing out on the ice. Seriously how fun would that be, just a bunch of little sugar gliders with tiny skates and sticks playing hockey, maybe "flying" around since they can kind of do that too. Anyways here's what their jersey crest could look like too maybe:

Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Last season we had a lot of surprise finishes that shook up the groups quite a bit this time around. Do you think last year’s top teams will stay there? Was that an anomaly? Why or why not?

I am biased, fully admit that. Team Great Britain has it this year. We had an incredible run last season and are only better this year. Last year’s tournament was bananas. The group stage, where Team Great Britain was the top seed, was basically meaningless. Losing in the first round really stung. I know we will be better this year though, as so many of our players are nearing or reaching their peaks. This is the year the Brits get over that hump and really make a push for the gold. For me personally, it is an absolute goal of mine to win gold. I have won an SMJHL championship, a WJC championship and am currently in the SHL finals with the incredible Seattle Argonauts. I am half way to the quadfecta of winning everything possible in the SHL, and I am in just my second SHL season. It will only go up from here, and Team Great Britain is going to do some damage this year.

Building the best line of NHL players from Great Britain is not a difficult task. There aren’t a ton of options. First, for the forward group.

We start with the leading point getter in Ken Hodge, who racked up 800 points in 880 games. He will be joined by Peter Lee (245 points) and Adam Brown (218 points). They are three of just four English players who has at least 100 goals in the NHL.

On defense we have tough guy Jack Evans (990 penalty minutes in 754 NHL games) alongside Alex Smith (92 points in 443 NHL games).

In net, there are only two options. We will go with the guy who appeared in more games and that is Chris Worthy, who played in 26 NHL games.

The only answer for an anagram of the Seattle Argonauts is to go with the Atlante Stegosaur. First of all, love the idea of having a dinosaur as a mascot. There needs to be more teams who have a dino as their mascot. It is actually incredible that more sports don’t have teams with a dinosaur mascot. We would not be leaving our incredible fans in Seattle, but the swap is something that I think they would all embrace. It is so much more fun to dress up as a Stegosaurus as opposed to an astronaut. Who doesn’t love a good dino?!?! We would also be able to change our goal horn to a dinosaur roar, which on its own is a reason to make the change. I can see it now, all the dinosaur costumes in the crowd and our fans roaring in other fans faces. Let’s get it, GO STEGOSAUR!!!

Previous playoff experience counts for a lot during the finals. This is the first season that Seattle has gotten past the first two rounds. Winning the third round on their first attempt was impressive, but I don't think this run will carry them past a much stronger Inferno team. Atlanta has been in this spot before and knows what it takes to win. Their roster improved since their last visit and they're back to win this time.

An incredibly hot goalie has to run cold eventually, right? If you're in the position of the Argonauts going into this series I think you want to end it as quickly as possible. Get a few more godly games out of Miller and hope the save percent is enough to get you through. There's no doubt that Atlanta will come in to the series with a lot of offense, so a big defensive effort from the Seattle blue line and blue paint players will be needed to stop the onslaught.

Do you think a dynamic team like Seattle that can capitalize on so many of their PP chances will lead to Atlanta playing scared-- worried about what might happen if they enter the box? Do you think a relentless Atlanta team that is so flush with even strength scoring is going to be too much for Seattle to take?

Like most of Seattle's stats during this run, such high numbers seem un-sustainable. As much as I'd like to imagine that the incredible rate of powerplay goals will lead them to success, the high numbers have to eventually settle down. As for Atlanta, their low powerplay numbers will probably rise in this series back to a level expected of a #1 ranked team.

7. Milestones, up to 3 TPE
Milestones are folded in with CW. So just link your Milestone claim as task 12 for up to 3 TPE towards your 16 total.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post your claim in the milestones thread for tpe earned per stat, and then link that post in your CW submission. This is done because the person who grades CW will be a different person than double-checks milestones.

The team’s owner is complaining that the rafters in your arena are looking empty. You’ve been tasked with creating a banner for one of your team’s achievements this season. Did you get eliminated in round one? Sounds like a banner to me! Did you lose a record number of road games? Banner! Win the cup? I guess that’s a banner too.

13. Graphic, 1 TPE, crAIyon? More like CWaiyon!
In the spirit of the insanely easy ring task that stayed around forever, we can run this one again!. Try using OpenAI’s DALL E Mini (now known as crAIyon) to generate a Challenge Cup related image. It could be a championship ring, your player lifting the cup, a locker room celebration. Go nuts as long as you’re attempting to make it SHL related! The results will be weird, but it’s fun!

Create the best line you can using real life or SHL hockey players from your player’s home country. Give me 3F, 2D and a G– and a short description of why you chose who you did!

Aaron Wilson - There's no doubt that Wilson has had a legendary career in both the SHL and IIHF.
Matt Kholin - Kholin was a very solid player for team Canada over the course of many seasons.
Kev Kevens - My own player has found a lot of success in the IIHF over the last two seasons. The only thing missing now is a gold medal.
Adam Barron - The long time captain of team Canada is the captain for a reason. His leadership on and off the ice is unparalleled.
Nathan Thomas - A player who had a bit of a slow start to his career, Thomas has been one of the best defenders in the IIHF for a few seasons now.
Frans Eller - The most recent goalie to win a gold medal for Team Canada, Eller is the most recent example of a Canadian Goalie finding success.

23. Written, 2 TPE, Dreams (100 words min.)
Sticking with the “last prompt is just letting people write about themselves” idea, here we go! I’m curious to know what sort of things you hope for in the world! What are your dreams? Maybe that’s a dream job, a dream house, an opportunity for your kids. I don’t know! Whatever you want to write about. What do you hope for in the future?

In the real world I just have a dream of living a happy and sustainable life. I want to live close to family and friends and never have to worry about the long-term health, safety, or security of the people I love, as well as everyone else. I hope that the future holds less turmoil and grief for humanity and that we can live in a world where people will collaborate to reach important goals on a global scale. If the dreams outside my control do not come to fruition, I just want to continue to find joy in the day to day patterns of a simple and secure life.
