S67 SMJHL PT #2 - Season Preview
#31

Following what without a doubt a disappointing season, considering the team won the Four-Star Cup the year prior, the Detroit Falcons are looking to make their way to the post-season dance and It is my belief that they have the ability to surprise us this season. It can actually go both ways as they have strong mix of skilled veterans such as Centermen Bnana NWaffles with his overall scoring and passing abilities and Ring Winger Jojo Larkin who is able to pass it to the best of 'em mixed with newly drafted hopefuls such as Left Wingman Bastien Primeau on offense who is showing he is more than a scorer and Right Defensemen Nash Topalo growling enemies away at the blue line as well who are looking to make their name known through their hard work and skills.

The effort displayed during the beginning of this season as well in the preseason promises for an exciting run towards the playoff, one the Falcons is working hard to screech themselves into so that they can have a shot at clenching their claws on another Four Star Cup!

The Detroit Falcons are off to a great start this season already. Just about a full quarter of the way through the season we are sitting nicely above a 50 percent win rate. Captain Banan n'waffles has been a leader and captain not only in the locker room but also on the ice. Both he and Trap Zelenock are on the league leaderboard putting the puck in the back of the net. These two leaders have a total of 10 goals scored a piece in only fifteen games played so far. Our defenseman Nathan Meagher has also been a key contributor to our team. One of the players Nash takes over, this guy is brilliant at tracking down pucks and getting in the way of our opponents shots. You can't get the puck in the net if it doesn't make it past the defenseman right? Thats exactly what Nathan has been laying down all season. He already has a total of 41 shots blocked in 15 games. I'm afraid to see what he looks like without his pads on.

The Quebec City Citadelles are expecting to have a good season this year! Coming off of a 6-3 win over the Colorado Raptors, the owls are sitting at fifth place in the league, with a 9-5 record as of now. Not exactly where they want to be, but certainly trending in the right direction. The leading scorer so far this season, is none other than Sophie Bordeleau. This center is currently sitting at 22 points with 9 goal and 13 assists to lead the team. With 45 shots over 14 games and an astounding 28.9 shot percentage, she knows how to put the puck in the net! On the back end, Nikolai Skovgaard is playing the role as a shut down defenseman. Nikolai leads the team in takeaways (17) and has only been scored on once in the 14 games he has played in. However, he is no stranger to generating offense as well, touting 8 assists and 1 goal so far this season, leading Quebec's defense in points. The starting goaltender for Quebec this season is Caleb Hayden. Caleb has played in 12 out of the 14 games so far this season and boasts a .901 save percentage and a 2.59 goals against average.

The season is looking promising for the Anchorage Armada. With the recent signings of Sebastien Regazzoni, Lazos Otasrob, and Davos Otasrob, the Armada have added to an already solid foundation. It was a thoroughly thought-out draft by General Manager Regnar and Assistant Manager Retuperkele. The pieces they have brought in are not only strong players, but overall good people and are active members of the team.
Last year did not turn out as Anchorage Armada had hoped for, but with the new additions it looks like they are going to make another run for the playoffs. Each player they drafted added a unique skill set that the Anchorage Armada were missing. Lazos's ability to get the puck to the net, will hopefully give a kick start to their powerplay. With the addition of Regazzoni it solidifies down the middle of the ice, and Davos Otasrob rounds out the team with his shutdown defensive style and high IQ penalty killing. It is a promising more rounded out team that I expect to see from the Armada and maybe this will be the year they take it home!

Last Newfoundland was not very good. But thankfully in the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League it is very doable to quickly turn around the whole team with a few players. The first critical player in helping Newfoundland to turn things around would be Brennan Kennedy III. As a rookie BK3 had 25 goals and 15 assists for 40 points in 66 games. If he can continue to further develop his offensive skillset he'll probably be the team's greatest weapon on offense and will likely play a critical role on the bulk of goals this season. Next would be winger Ashton King who is entering what will likely be his final season in NL. He's the most experienced member of NL's top line and will likely be providing the leadership that the team will need to accomplish their goals this season! Lastly we'll need Rasmus Bergling to hold things down on the blue line and keep us in the games. If we can do all this we can have a good season.

It is a bright new season for the Vancouver Whalers, with new crop of young rookies ready to make a name for them selves on the team. Last season Vancouver put in a good effort a finished near the top of their conference.
This season I am hoping we can take another step and make a solid push for the cup. A key to this will be a return to form from the veterans on the team. On the back end Miroslav Ketil will be leaned on to provide league leading offense from the back end, mean while Aleksandr Iskandrov will need to drive offense from the front. Repeating their performances from last year will be critical to the success of the Whalers this year.
The beginning to the season started off a bit slow with some players looking as if they had regressed in skill back a whole year, with a bit of effort from the GMs and coaches things have been set right and the players have picked it up and improved. Hopefully from here out the Whalers will be leading the league by the mid way point.

The Yukon Malamutes seemed to struggle through the seven game pre-season, despite finishing in the top five towards the end of said pre-season. Their goal differential, if the standings were decided by it, would leave them at the bottom five in the league, ironically enough. It would be nice for the Malamutes to not have a terrible goal differential through the regular season, and finishing higher than top five is always something that can be desired. There are a few key players who would have to step up in order to make this dream possible for Yukon. First off is starting goaltender Bandit Heeler, who struggled in the preseason and put up a 3.16 goals against average and a .888 save percentage. A tightening of the guy between the pipes obviously would help, and less goals against is always great. Second up is Oles Kobliska, Yukon's leading point scorer (with 88 points) last season. Management can only hope he goes above this total again. With the disappearance of top defenseman Lord Farquaads, any of the defensemen on the team should be expected to step up and take up the helm as the team's #1 defenseman as well.

The Anchorage Armada are primed this season to take a step forward. They picked up a pair of defensemen in the draft as well as a third line center and they looked poised to put on an impressive run of games at they head into season 67. They started off the year with an impressive preseason and started the season off in the same form. They currently sit 6th in the league with twice as many wins than losses and hope to put a lot more into the win column as the team gels more. They have a strong core of players and have asked a lot of their rookies so far and it appears the rookies are up for the challenge as they are contributing on the score sheet. Rigazzoni has 12 points through 16 games and the Otasrob brothers have put up 5 (Davos) and 6 (Lazos) points respectfully. Watch for these rookies to blossom even more as the season progresses.

For Anchorage, the Armada are looking like a playoff competitor, and ready to make some noise in the postseason. Looking to improve on their mid-range finish last season, where they won a handful more games than they lost, many of thier players are looking to take another step in their development, and a crop of young guns are coming in to take their place as impact players in the league. One of the key players to Anchorage's success will be Edward Elric, with the speedy winger looking to rack up the points and once again dominate possession in the offensive zone. An interesting combo coming the Armada's way this season will also be kay to their regular season results, with siblings Davos and Lazos Ostarob forming a defensive pair on the back end. While both gifted two-way defenders, Davos tends towards the stouter defensive game, and Lazos uses speed and offensive skill as his main weapons for success. The sibling's chemistry on their pairing will be vital for Anchorage as they move through the regular season.

This season the Colorado Raptors have big shoes to fill, coming off of a big season last season. As well as a bunch of good seasons previous to that. Colorado Is a team that always manages to squeak itself into the post season at the very least so I am not very worried. I think the three biggest players that will be Tom Pedersen, Adrian O’Rugg and Erik Bergmark. Tom Pedersen is a senior member of the team, and one of the leading goal scorers in the Raptors last season. It will be a very safe bet to assume he has only improved in the offseason and that he will be putting up big numbers again this season. As for Adrian O’Rugg the Center, and Erik Bergmark the right wing are both recent additions to the team who are in the perfect position to get better as the season progresses and give the Raptors that final push they need to get into the playoffs.

Despite an exciting preseason, I have to say that Loosh O'Sullivan doesn't quite make the cut of my top 3 most crucial players for the Great Falls Grizzlies. For starters, let's look at second line winger Bobby McGinnis. McGinnis will be crucial to the success of the Grizzlies this season, as he must be the primary goalscorer and leader of a second line with newcomer Loosh O'Sullivan at center and the better-established, but still growing, Alisters Vismanis at right wing. The first line can do a lot, but they're going to need the second line's support and they will be heavily reliant on McGinnis. Another crucial piece for the Grizzlies will be goaltender Alvin Towne. The value of a goalkeeper in hockey can hardly be understated, and the two-season vet has a lot to bring to the table. If he can continue to grow as he has in the past two seasons, he will be quite a wall to be reckoned with by SMJHL standards. Finally, as the defensive mention, it's got to be handed to Chris Valentine. This player is coming into his rookie season with an astounding amount of skill and talent. Stepping into the first line LD position as a rookie, his contributions to the Grizzlies will likely make-or-break their first line's success. He's strong on the puck and surprisingly well-rounded and fit, so he's the perfect man for the Grizzlies to rely on when push comes to shove. Go Grizzlies!

Look at this upcoming season for Newfoundland, I think it is going to be an uphill battle since we did not have the greatest preseason showing. I think we have a good core of up and coming players and also a lot of veteran players with significant experience in the league that the young players will have to learn from and grow throughout the year to have a successful season. The first player who will be a key to Newfoundlands success is going to be Rasmus Bergling, who is one of the leaders of the team being named a captain and is also one of the top defenseman for the berserkers who is able to produce both offensively and defensively. The next player who will be a key for the Berserkers is Ashton King who is a veteran on the team being in his fourth season in the SMJHL. King brings a lot of offensive presence and is expected to be one of the top playmakers for Newfoundland this season. The last key player to the Berserkers success this season will come from Brennan Kennedy III who will most likely be leaned on heavily to put the puck in the net. Kennedy will be playing on the top line with King this year so with this duo together the Berserkers will be looking for a lot of goals coming from these two. Overall Newfoundland will be looking at contributions from all players on the roster and if that happens then it will turn out to be a very good season. Berserkers
