Holy Moly, a New Wave of Goalies!

The S68 Draft Class has hit the ice for their first SMJHL season and all eyes should be on one area - the newest wave of goalie talent. Ten days into the season and eight of these fresh goaltenders are showing the skills that will hopefully land them in the SHL after next year's draft. Let's take a closer look at each goalies situation and performance so far:

SINGLE START SENSATIONS

Walter Sobchak -  Citadelles
Hedo Zenscor -  Battleborn
Viktor Navolsky -  Raptors

Walter Sobchak and Hedo Zenscor have each taken the crease just once so far but the results have been sensational. Walter walked away with a win in Quebec City's opening game, 5-4 over Newfoundland. Nevada's Hedo made out even better, shutting the door on Vancouver completely to earn a 19 save shutout in his debut. Viktor Navolsky has also started once, making 31 saves in a 5-2 win over Vancouver with brief appearances in two other games. In total Navolsky boasts an impressive 1.99 Goals Against Average and .932 Save Percentage.

SPLITTING STARTS IN KELOWNA

Sea Jebus -  Knights
Sjoforsvaret -  Knights

These two goalies have each laced up their skates on multiple cases as Kelowna appears to be splitting starts between goalies evenly. Apart from games against Vancouver and Newfoundland that got away from them the results have been promising for Sea Jebus and Sjoforsvaret. Sea Jebus earned their first career win against the Regina Elk in a 29 save performance, and though Sjoforsvaret hasn't quite done the same their 33 save debut against the Anchorage Armada to begin the season is growing more impressive by the day.  After all, Anchorage has scored 3 or more in every other game this season so holding them just 2 (in a debut game no less) is something to take notice of.

GOD SAVE THE CREASE

Alexis Texas -  Elk
Bandit Heeler -  Malamutes
Jeff Newman -  Falcons

The next generation of British goaltending has arrived, hopefully before it is too late. The senior national team is notably without a goalie; these three rookies are hoping to prove they are worthy of filling that spot in net. Both Alexis Texas (hailing from Belfast) and Jeff Newman (hailing from Liverpool) boast .500 records ten days in, and each have notched their first career shutout (Alexis did so against Maine in a 17 save performance while Jeff earned his with 10 saves against Great Falls). But it's Bandit Heeler (hailing from London) that has stolen the show so far; Bandit's 4-1 record along with 1.81 Goals Against Average, 4.71 Goals Saved Above Average and .925 Save Percentage put him among the best in the SMJHL and in the lead for all qualified rookies. Whomever takes the job as starter for team Great Britain, it must be good news for current National Team Heads @steveoiscool and @Aleris that there is new talent on the horizon in goal.

The SMJHL season is young. These eight goalies appear to be even younger. Yet even with a small sample size, it is clear to see that the future is bright for this next wave of goalie talent. Holy moly indeed!
