(GRADED) Deep Dive #1 - Good managers make a difference

Throughout history, managerial styles have changed countless times. This has shown over and over again in everything from leadership of a country, to companies, to sports teams. No one has ever truly known the right way to do anything realistically as it seems some things tend to work for some and not for others. This has never been more present than in the SMJHL. The Simulation Major Junior Hockey League has seen a wide variety of characters as general managers since its conception over 60 seasons ago. Some have created dynasties while some have overseen season after season of mid level success. Obviously some teams can be excused as the turnover rate for managers for some teams meant that a vision set in season 50 for example, may have seen a change in plan 5 or 6 times in a 10 season stretch. The need for a true vision in this league can not be understated, and that is showcased no better than with the Nevada Battleborn. Since its inception Nevada has had 3 (technically 4 but i will get into that later) General Managers. Jearim from seasons 55-58, SecondSucks22 from seasons 59-61, and Skoldpaddor from season 62 to the time of this deep dive. Looking into Jearims time as GM, it almost seems like names were the priority, the bigger the name the more likely they were to get drafted by Nevada, despite reputation. This tended to be a hindrance to Nevada in the long run, and that is showcased by the teams record under Jearims reign. In four seasons Nevada went 119-155-24, good for an average of bottom 4 most seasons. Once Jearim retired from managing, we briefly has W19eaver as general manager, however due to some personal issues he was forced to step down after a week. Following this SecondSucks stepped in and took over the team. Arguably the best thing accomplished in this tenure was bringing skoldpaddor in as co-gm, as the team record over the three seasons Second was in power were abysmal at best. The main changes being made to this team as this duo tried their hand at running things was a hard core culture change spear headed by Skoldpaddor. One Second stepped down, again due to personal issues, Skoldpaddor went to work. Continuing the culture change all of a sudded the Nevada lockerroom was a place people actually wanted to be, encouraging players to actually try. Since the gm change Skoldpaddor has lead Nevada to more wins (in 5 seasons) than Nevada had throughout the two previous regime’s. This has also lead to unparalleled success in the playoffs, as Nevada recently became the only team in the FHM history to sweep the playoffs (in the SMJHL, I have yet to look into SHL playoff history). While sure some of this success is due to good luck drafting, a large amount has got to be assigned to Skoldpaddor’s unwavering insistence that the Nevada Locker room should be a warm and welcoming place to everyone, so long as that person is not a bigot.
