S68 PT #0: RollerCoaster Tycoon Due: November 20th @ 11:59 PM (PST)

Ignacio Garza's playing career has just begun, being a fledgling prospect of the San Francisco Pride. The Spanish winger got off to a slower start in the SMJHL, not declaring eligibility from the junior European leagues until a third of the way through season 67 of the SMJHL. Garza was claimed off of entry waivers by the Anchorage Armada, and quickly shipped up North to join the Boats in Alaska. Playing somewhat sheltered minutes early on, Garza emerged as a competent defensive winger who surprised with his offensive upside, scoring 10 goals and 23 points in his rookie season, with only 47 games played - good for just barely shy of a 0.5 PPG pace. For a scout-described defensive winger and grinding specialist, this was a welcome surprise. Garza didn't slouch on the defensive side of things either, leading Anchorage forwards with shots blocked despite playing 19 fewer games than the rest, while also piling up 59 hits in 47 games. Anchorage did not make it past eventual semifinalists St. Louis in the playoffs, but look to be a young team ready to take the next step this season. During the S68 offseason, Garza snuck into the first round of the SHL draft, being selected 20th overall by the San Francisco Pride with the final pick of the initial round. Now his career continues with his sophomore year on the Armada, and looking to do some damage in the S68 SMJHL playoffs.

Duncan Mackenzie is a choker. He is a regular season beast, who cant put it together in playoffs or tournaments. Years of underperforming have haunted him, starting in the JHL and following him through the WJC and IIHF. When he finally got a chance to attack the SHL playoffs he was prepared to once again disappoint his fans and teammates. He had absolutely crushed the regular season, jelling with Evan Winter and longtime linemate Grogu Mandosson. 50 goals. First ever Dragon to reach that mark. He was prepared to fail. He knew it was coming. and then. 5 GOALS. In one game! He was right at the top of the scoring race through the first round. Sadly, the team came apart in round 2, fighting hard against the eventual cup winners. That said, he has finally broken the back of his curse. Now it is time to turn a new page and start disappointing in the regular season!

PLAYER PROMPT- Ok, ok, I hear you. You're a hockey player, not a roller coaster designer! Fine. Let's talk about your player then! Careers in the SHL can be like a roller coaster. You might change teams, have shots at greatness, hit rock bottom, get drafted, retire, score big goals, make huge mistakes, the whole nine yards!

Written Task:  Give me a short summary of your player's career so far. What are the highs? What are the lows? What parts of their history have shaped who they are as a player? What are they excited about next? Think of it like you're pitching your player for a special on ESPN. Why would your career make a great story? (150+ words)

The career of Philip J Fry has been, in one word, short.  He has one season in the J in the books, one free agency period, one draft and one WJC under his belt.  The most challenging aspect to all of these has been the limitations put on his with his progression.  He puts in the time and effort to continue his improvement but feels held back by this invisible wall.  In his second season he felts he broke through a bit but once again is just not able to reach is full potential.  He is hoping in 2 to 3 more seasons he will be able to break through all of those barriers and really open the flood gates.

He wasn't happy being among the league leaders in minus in the J last season or being severely capped in the WJC but did feel that his offensive contribution were above expectations.  He expects to really have a breakout in the J within the next two seasons. (167 Words)

Player Prompt

Sven's career has been one of ups and down, loyalty and deceit, stress and relief.
From the start of his junior career with the Vancouver Whalers, where he quickly rose to captainship.
He was later traded to the Carolina Kraken, where he ended up winning the cup in his final junior season.
Having multiple draft rumors circulating, making the SHL entry draft more confusing than anything. Multiple teams had claimed that they would draft Sven at certain picks. Some even as early as 3rd overall. He however ended up being drafted at 5th overall and voiced his excitement to join New England.

As Sven joined New England on the ice, the entire thing had started slowing down. Some bad luck during the height of the team's cup window at the time grew some unrest, and a blowup happened. Since then New England has been in a non-stop retooling stage. Being unable to pass the first playoff round. Sven leading the team during his peak, but now sadly slowing down as the team reaches another window.

During his career so far in New England he hasn't won any league awards. But instead has a coupled of team awards. Sven is hoping to be able to stay with the Wolfpack for a big part of this new window, but he knows his place among the best is slowly fading.

Player prompt:

Archie's career so far is a story of two halfs. On one hand, a monster of a juniors career, setting franchise records for Maine, almost leading the scoring in his last season and promising to be a great threat at the SHL level. Unfortunately, I am a GM. GM's sometimes have to do what is best not for them, but for the team, and the team demanded a defenseman. So, Archie stepped into the blue line role, and along the line, has struggled to leave bigger impact on the SHL so far. His scoring was nowhere to be found, and neither seems to have been his defensive game, the responsibilities laid upon him unfulfilled and left to be solved by the team's goaltending, or the rest of his teammates. It's clear Archie has struggled in his position, but the last season's trip to the SHL finals has been a sign of better tomorrows as Manhattan doesn't need to rely on him, just needs him to not be a liability. A task that he hasn't always been succesful at, but hopefully might one day be fullfillable.

CREATIVE PROMPT - Team ownership has ostensibly lost it's mind once again and tasked you with building a thrilling new attraction to encircle your home arena. They want the fastest, most exciting rollercoaster imaginable that offers something you can't get anywhere else-- and they want it branded like your team!

Written Task: Describe the most incredible roller coaster you can that's themed like your SHL/SMJHL team. What does it do, what does it look like, and why are people going to pay double the regular ticket price to be able to ride it before they watch the game? How are you going to include your teams branding and overall vibe? (150+ words)

I suppose if we're trying to build a rollercoaster based off of Egli's young career you would probably want to work backwards and start with the highest points for the most thrilling ride. As you start the ride you're hoisted up to the first drop which plummets downward at a near ninety degree angle, and just as the track evens out and you think that the drop is over - it begins to fall gain - not once, but two more times. The three drops represent the three goals medals that Egli has won with DACH in the WJC to begin his career and the nomination for defenceman of the tournament in the most recent campaign.
The track would then make a sharp hairpin turn to bring the rider on a tour of Egli's time in the SMJHL, another hoist would lift the train to the tallest drop of the entire ride - the game seven win against QCC for the Four Star Cup which immediately turns out into a four-loop corkscrew for each series won to get the cup.

The Renegades will have a brand new coaster attraction that is an interactive experience for guests that ride it. The theme of the ride is a Wild West horse pursuit through the Texas scenery, where the riders are a group of bandits that just robbed a train and are making their getaway. It's a bit of a 'choose your own adventure' style attraction, where at certain points in the pursuit the guests can choose which path to take. Do they try to loose the law-men through the gap in the mountains, do they attempt to cross the Rio Grande, or do they venture into the desert? The path is determined by popular vote via buttons in-front of each rider, which allows each ride to be somewhat unique, promoting riders to wait in line multiple times to make sure they experience each of the potential paths! One lucky car-load of riders in the hours prior to the game are given box tickets to that evenings game, which provides another great incentive for guests to ride multiple times!

So 2nd prompt but I have a bit of an issue since I am still in the minors. I guess compared to my last career at this time it is in easy mode. I had a very rough minors thanks to those Vancouver bums but massively happy at the Colorado Raptors and already have a ring and WJC gold to my name. Can't go wrong with that. Defending is fairly fun as well. I am going to a place in rebuild but a place I can call home and enjoy so honestly I have zero issues with what has happened so far. I hope to be a pretty good rookie and defender overall.

I look forward to the future and I am hoping it is not that much of a rollercoaster but I have zero expectations with this current career so I should be golden in the long run. I guess we will see. I got the one thing I wanted.

Answering for the player prompt:

Vaseline Podcalzone's career is certainly full of highs and lows. From only putting up eight points in 50 games as a fourth liner getting eight minutes of playing time with the Newfoundland Berserkers to captaining the team for two seasons as a top six winger, that in itself was certainly a ride. Granted, besides individual success, Podcalzone saw his best playoff success in the SMJHL in his rookie season with Newfoundland, as the team won the Four Star Cup that season.

Podz's SHL career is mostly stable but certainly could be described as having some highs and lows. From helping the Argonauts make the playoffs for the first time in his rookie campaign that saw him come as the runner up in the Jesster race, to a few seasons of consistent point production before breaking out into an all-star calibre player, before becoming captain and helping the team win the Challenge Cup last season.

So yeah, Podz certainly had his highs and lows, but for the most part, it's been mostly positives.

Player Prompt

Heading into his rookie season in the SHL, M’Baku Olubori has already had a tumultuous career.

Growing up, he played soccer and American football mostly, but gravitated to ice hockey in his mid teens. He started playing hockey around age 15, working with private coaches in Abuja, Nigeria (his hometown). Two and a half years later, he signed a contract with a Swiss juniors team, following one of his closest childhood friends Prentice Parsons. Coach and he butted heads, as Baku wasn’t able to play his preferred style and his minutes got slashed.

Late in that season, he quit on that team to sign as a DFA with Nevada Battleborn of the SMJHL, assisted by his new agent, Johnny Hamilton. Then Olubori was drafted 4th overall by the Regina Elk and starred for them for 4 seasons. His rookie season (S64) was impressive, as he moved up to the top line with veterans Jaeger Jones & Yannick Svoboda by midseason and got some rookie of the year hype. S65 was a major letdown, as much of the Elk couldn’t get offense going, but he followed that up with an impressive S66 taking over as top line center (22-40-62). In S67, as Regina was a presumed favorite for the Four Star Cup, Olubori’s role was cut back and other players supplanted his offensive performance. Many games, the fourth-year player looked lost and frustrated.

Now goes into camp presumed to play a major role for the rebuilding Platoon. He may get the first opportunity to fill the retired Karl Krashwagen’s role on the top line. Johnny Hamilton must hope he can find chemistry with current franchise superstar, Lord Raiden.

Written Task

Welcome to the Borealis – the newest roller coaster at Northern Lights Arena. The Borealis is a steel rail rollercoaster. It is a vibrant light green, as green as the skies during the peak of the beautiful show in the skies of Manitoba. It features a steep incline at the beginning, allowing the fans to take in the beautiful plains of Manitoba. All passengers are provided with an Aurora branded parka, which is thoroughly sanitized after every ride just in case some passengers get a little bit pukey. After the initial trip up, the Borealis features a deep dive down and then two loops which result in the passengers going upside down for a brief moment. It features a brief follow-up climb, and then another steep descent. After a few more twists and turns and drops, it brings you back to the entrance of Northern Lights Arena and the Winnipeg Aurora Pro Shop.
