S67 All Star Game Review!

![]() Registered Senior Member ![]() S67 All Star Game Review! - - - ![]() This year, Seattle was the host for the 67th annual JHL all star game! It was the one night of the year where all the best players in the league share the same ice at the same time! Among the cavalcade of stars was a virtual who's who in the J including eight Timbers, five Falcons, four Citadelles, four Elk, three Battleborn, three Raptors, three Whalers, two Armada, two Berserkers, two Malamutes, and one player each from the Grizzlies, Knights, Kraken and Scarecrows! So without further adieu, here's a team by team look at the complete rosters: * * * ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() ![]() * * * ![]() * * * ![]() * * * ![]() * * * ![]() * * * In perhaps an indication of what was to come, the game got off to a fast start as Portgas D. Ace scored a beautiful goal (unassisted) just 13 seconds in! Despite the initial shock, the black stars were able to regroup, regain their composure and battle back to tie 2-2 after twenty minutes. (With additional first period markers coming from: Mando Lorian, Casper Nilsson and Jolmi Koivu). With the game headed to the second, the gold stars attack became relentless as team gold tallied three unanswered goals to take a commanding 5-2 lead into the third. (Oles Kobliska, Portgas D. Ace and Nibbles The Squirrel all struck pay dirt after helping the golds carry the play for much of the second). Now facing a three goal deficit, team black dug deep and fought back to tie for the second time tonight, by matching the gold explosion with three unanswered of their own in the third! (Huge props to Jacques Hammmer with a pair and Casper Nilsson with his second of the night to power the black comeback). From there, with the All Star Classic now tied 5-5, we headed for sudden death overtime! The two teams played three on three for a full five minutes, but notwithstanding a number of good scoring chances, neither club was able to break through with the decisive game winning goal. For better or worse, the outcome of the all star game would ultimately be determined by penalty shots, as the best snipers in the J prepared to put on a show! But wait right there, for despite the vast array of assembled firepower, the true stars of the shootout would prove to be the two netminders, (B Jobin and Caleb Hayden). It was a moment where all the pressure was squarely on two players, and with the game hanging in the balance, they both rose to the occasion and combined to stop all but a single shot! Then came the biggest play of the night, when Sophie Bordeleau skated out to face her Quebec team mate, (goaltender Caled Hayden), in what would ultimately become a shootout for the ages. In what must have been a bittersweet moment, Sophie paused for a second or two to collect her thoughts, while skating a quick circle at center prior to the Citadelle versus Citadelle showdown. It was a moment where Sophie no doubt reflected on all the times these two faced each other in practice. They knew each other so well, and though we may never know just how much personal knowledge came into play, it does seem likely she was well aware of Caleb's tendencies. Picking up the puck at center ice, Sophie skated in to the right circle, before driving past the hash marks and head faking a move outside. Hayden had come out to challenge and was in good position, so Bordeleau pulled the puck back in as if she was going five hole and the second she saw Caleb bite, she quickly dragged it backhand and roofed a shot just under the bar on the short side! There was literally nothing Caleb could do. He'd read the play well and didn't fall for the first deke, but once he thought Bordeleau had run out of room, he committed, only to discover (along with every one else watching), just how quick her hands are in tight! For Sophie Bordeleau it was a great way to cap off her JHL career, and while the two Citadelles were opponents only moments ago, Caleb was among the first to congratulate her on the game winning goal! - - - And now for a deep dive into the numbers, we present the top three all stars with the best in game ratings! Coming in first place, (with an astonishing game rating of 88), playing for team Gold and representing the Colorado Raptors is: Jolmi Koivu! Jolmi Koivu | GR 88 | OGR 100 | DGR 76 | G 1 | A 1 | SOG 6 | HT 2 | TK 3 | Jolmi enjoyed a two point night, (with a goal and an assist), plus six shots on net, two big hits, three takeaways and an incredible offensive rating of 100! Pretty much the perfect game!! Second place goes to the recent number one overall pick in the S68 SHL draft, we refer of course to the one and only Nash Topalo of the Detroit Falcons! Nash Topalo | GR 85 | OGR 79 | DGR 91 | G 0 | A 2 | SOG 4 | HT 2 | TK 4 | BS 2 | As you can see from the numbers, Nash led the way for team Black with an incredibly strong defensive effort, good for 91 points to go along with two assists, four point shots, a couple of hits, two blocks and four takeaways! Any way you look at it, Nash put on a great all round performance that checked all the boxes and firmly established Topalo as a key player to watch in the future!! Last but certainly not least, comes another member of QCC, this time it's a driving force behind team Gold who goes by the name of Portgas D. Ace! Portgas D. Ace | GR 82 | OGR 88 | DGR 67 | G 2 | A 2 | SOG 5 | HT 2 | TK 1 | Ace was the third and final player to tally a game rating in the eighties! No easy task, especially when you consider just how tough the opposition was. Looking at the numbers we see a four point night, (2 goals and 2 assists), which actually earned Portgas the nod as first star of the game!! Congratulations on a superb effort to make the S67 All Star Game a definite career highlight! Second Star: Miroslav Ketil Third Star: Philippe Eko-Eel Quote:1262 Words
