Revamping the SHL History Subforum
#1

Hey Everyone!

I’m here with some exciting additions to the SHL History Department. You guys might know @luke for putting together a ton of history spreadsheets and other history projects done in the past. But as great as they were, a lot of the spreadsheets are no longer updated or are now broken.

With the help of @Matteo, we are now changing things in order to make things more sustainable and less intense for those contributing to the SHL's historical data. So with his blessings, we are now introducing:

https://shlhistory.shinyapps.io/SHLHistoryDepartment/

The goal for us was to create a website with a lot of the features that Luke had in his spreadsheets, along with making things easy for Matteo while simplifying things for anyone in the future who might want to add any features to this project.

So what are the features on this website?

Stats

Season Stats
Filter between Skater and Goalie
Filter between Playoff and Regular Season
Filter between, player Names, position*, teams, seasons, etc

Career Stats
Filter between Skater and Goalie
Filter between, player Names, position*, teams, seasons, etc

Franchise Stats
Filter between Skater and Goalie
Filter between, player Names, teams, seasons, etc

*Positions are always a bit fickle, but we tried our best to get the position right for everyone. Especially for players that played S1-S28 we did not have the exact position, so the same way we used for the Trading Cards, we borrowed that for this. And then for FHM, in the files, whatever you are at 15 or above in the position you were assigned that position. So if you have any issues PM Me

Future Improvements: Adding SMJHL, IIHF, WJC

Leaderboards

For the leaderboards, we are taking a bit more of a chart/customizable portion of the site. You can choose the leaders for any stat, during any time, across different eras with the slider bar. But, you can also select different Era’s that are more official, like the Dead Puck Era(S1-S5), Inflation Era(S9-S11), etc. that could give you a better idea of which players were more dominant in different eras in SHL History.

Achievements

This one was our favourite addition and one we knew we wanted to get done since the start. There really wasn't a way before this to look at a player and see what they had accomplished without going back into the forums. I hope this helps the HOF committee, and anyone that wants to learn more about our league's history.

Future Improvements to be made: Adding SMJHL Awards, Adding Cup Winners, Adding Team Awards, adding IIHF Awards

HOF Eligibility Tool

This was mostly a tool for the HOF Committee to help them figure out who needs to be on the ballot and when players are HoF eligible.

As always, when there’s SHL historical data mentioned, it’s always important to thank @.bojo for his incredible work in the past with providing STHS data. The famous Bojo Box has been an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to research history, and have a database for everything STHS statistics related. Without him, S3-S17’s regular season stats would have been lost. That means that someone would have had to go through the S18-S52 scoring page and extract the scoring out of every single one of those. It was a lot of hard work for him, and we appreciate him for what he did.

Also, a special thank you to @Canadice for his help with the project and the amazing SHL Analytics tool he had put together that helped give Luke and I the idea to make this website for the history department.

Luke and Jeffie are golden gods. I can't thank them enough for the work they put into this, and I'm so happy with how it has come out. This is huge for SHL History.

Looks fantastic so far thanks to everyone who worked on it.

Something I did notice when going through is that it splits up the career stats for players that had a position change. Not sure if that is intentional or not, but it does change things when looking at all-time records.

Is there a way to make sure players with identical names don't have their stats combined?
