S69 SMJHL PT #5 - MVP
#16

I mean, there's really just one choice at the moment and it's Cale Salad. They have about a 10 point lead on their closest competitor in that stat, with fairly even goals and assist numbers. They have one of the best +/- in the league, the best shooting percentage. Really everything you want to see out of an MVP in a way that is tangibly better than all of the other players. I guess the only thing they really lack in is the advanced metrics, but people who look at those are absolute nerds. I've never seen a number put on skates and lay down a hit.
I guess if you had to grasp at straws and look for someone within the advanced metrics, I can dig out 4 Chainz, who has the best Corsi for % and actually has a better +/- than Salad, but they also provide less than half the points Salad does. So, Salad.

I know that the awards committee looooves to look at stuff other than points to choose awards winners but c'mon. There's not really a whole lot of competition this season for the MVP. I'm obviously talking about the player with the best game rating because that's an amazing stat that everyone understands, e e.

No, seriously, I'm talking about Cale Salad. Homie is leading the league pretty comfortably in terms of goals and points. And what's amazing for him is that the awards committee can't even say he's getting all those points because he's on a good team because his team is not first but second in the SMJHL and no offense to anyone else on the Maine Timber but your team should rebrand to the Maine Salads. His closest teammate in point is trailing by 15 and their starting goalie has a pretty average save percentage. I don't wanna say Cale Salad is carrying his team on his green shoulders, but, yeah I'm saying it. Salad is good for you, unless you don't play for the Maine Timber.

The MVP from my experience tends to go a lot of the time to the forward who scored the most points in that season. In this case in the SMJHL, that would be Cale Salad who is having quite an unbelievable season if truth be told. He not only leads the league in points with a highly impressive tally of 97, but has managed to accrue 50 goals over the season so far. There is no denying that this is something of a historic season, and I think if I'm being totally honest there is not liekly to be any real contenders to this. Some of the goalies have put up good numbers this year, including Jeff Newman and Jaxon Markstrom, but no one has really put up the type of numbers to be looked at as MVPs, and Nino Di Giuseppe had a great year as a defenseman, tallying 48 points, but it's unfortunately not likely to be able to surpass the achievement that Salad has seen this season with the numbers that he's put up. So all that is a fairly long way of saying that Cale Salad is the deserved MVP of the SMJHL season.

There are so many good choices this year for MVP. Skaters who have provided and enormous point boost for their teams and have been leading the way in goals for. I think looking at a point production stand point it is hard to deny that S69 belongs of Cale Salad. He is 1st in goals by a healthy margin and is helping his team mates by being 4th league wide in assists. There are also a number of individual contributors that I think you could look at as being a difference makers on their teams also.

Cale Salad
Pawter Meowski
Bohdan Jarovski
Ekaterina Valieva

But lets not forget our faithful netminders! We have some outstanding goalies who are propelling their teams to the top of the league.

Jeff Newman has a comfortable lead with wins having backstopped Detroit to 36 Wins so far. We've also had some excellent performances from some of our Rookie goalies in Rhett Carpet and Jaxson Markstrom who have performed well in their limited deployment.

For me, the obvious front runner for SMJHL MVP this season is Cale Salad. Not only a great guy, Cale is also tearing up the juniors with an insane 53 goals and 50 assists, totaling 103 points. And he's doing it in under 20 minutes of ice time a game, which is great efficiency. And speaking of efficiency, he is shooting an amazing 26%, the highest percent of anyone in the top 20 goal scorers in the juniors. He is 16 points ahead of Bohdan Jarovsky in second, has the goals lead by 15 over Pawter Meowski, and has the third most assists in the league. On top of that, he also has the second highest plus minus, only trailing by two. He's also nearly 58% at the circle for faceoffs and has nearly as many takeaways as giveaways. He is truly a well rounded player excelling at both ends of the ice. If Salad is not the unanimous MVP, the entire committee should be fired.

When looking at all of the statistics (which I definitely know all of the abbreviations and importance of each), it is relatively easy to see the same name continue to pop up at the top of the most important stats: Cale Salad. I know, I know, who even likes Cale. I can assure you that no one in Colorado does. but when you have a 15-point lead in the "Points" category (which I am assured is a different stat than "goals") AND a 15-goal lead in the "Goals" category, it's hard not to vote for Cale, even if it tastes terrible. The only person who really even comes close to these kind of stats is Pawter Meowski, a cat on skates. But even he falls short of the Cale monument, with a 16-point and a 15-goal deficit. Cale even has the edge when it comes to assists and the "Plus/Minus" (which I am told is a statistic) category! There's no getting around it, this is another Cale-Craze year.

The two obvious choices for SMJHL mvp are the Maine Timber's Cale Salad and the Detroit Falcon's Jeff Newman. Newman leads all tendies in wins with 40 and shutouts with 13, both of which are impressive stats in and of themselves, but also impressive in how much separation he's created from the rest of the pack. In terms of goaltenders, there's no other clear winner of that debate. While Cale Salad probably has the MVP on lock with the goal and point lead (and a sneaky shooting % lead as well), Detroit's Bohdan Jarovsky has an outside contender bid with the league lead in assists and PP goals, as well as being #2 overall in points, and not particularly far off of Cale Salad's mark. It'll all come down to what stats the voters find important, and even then it might come down to secondary or even tertiary tiebreakers given these two and very similar advanced stats.

the mvp award is really dumb and for the most part the mental gymnastics involved to pick the mvp makes the award a waste of time. that said i think we can use the logic that the awards committee will inevitably use to pick correctly the mvp of the smjhl. lets do this by categories

1) points - typically these are valauble, but when you are on the awards committee you discout any points from a player on a good team, but also at the same time you discout points from players on abd teams because if they got points the team would win mroe games.

2) PIMs - some awards committee members might like these but lets be honest pims are counter productive so only the 1 or 2 complete morons on hte committee will look here at all.

3) intangebles - this is it. this is where votes are won. voters are dumb so if you have things like great goal cellies you will win hte award.

with this we find the best candidate for teh mvp is clearly Dabson.

League MVP, most valuable player. It is obvious it should go to Cale Salad from the Maine Timber. With it being his third year in juniors, he really perfected how to make a play happen. A true play making center. His face offs finished as 58 percent, which means he wins more then he losses. What is also great about Cale, is he not only scores but gets amazing assists. A great team player knows how to spread the wealth, which is exactly what is shown here. Cale ended the season with 106 points, huge difference from his 70 last season. Of those 106 points, 55 are goals and 51 are assists. More so, of his points, 29 of them where on the power play making him crucial to the special teams on Maine. To top it off, Cale is a class act who participated in zero fights this season. This is why Cale should get the SMJHL league MVP for sure.

The Favorite: Cale Salad Timber
The clear MVP this year is Cale Salad. You don’t just score 106 points, the most in league history, and lead the league in goals and not be the league’s Most Valuable Player. That's it. That's the analysis.

The Maid of Honor: Bohdan Jarovsky Falcons
If this were any other season, Jarovsky would be a clear favorite for MVP. The best player on the best team usually draws the MVP votes. But for the reasons stated above Bohdan finishes second in my book.

The Dark Horse: Matiss Ozolinsh Berserkers
Ozolinsh was lighting the lamp early and helped prop up the Berserkers high in the standings early in the season. Going pound for pound against Cale, the production started to trail behind as Salad pulled far ahead in the goals race.

Congratulations to the above three players on a solid season. Now they will turn their eyes towards the playoffs and the chance to be crowned a world junior champion.

I usually don't like picking just the top point leaders but I don't know too much about the J so here we go:

1. Cale Salad: Pretty easy pick. Cale salad was able to put up a ridiculous 55 goals this season (which was 15 higher than the second best goal scorer this season btw) to go along with 51 assist (fourth in the league) for a league leading 106 points (13 above second). Considering his team, Maine, was able to get 44 wins this season which is good enough for second in the entire league I see no reason why Cale Salad should not be awarded with the mvp at the end of this season.

2. Bohdan Jarovsky: Jarovsky put up 33 goals to go with his league leading 60 assists to come second in points this season with 93. The leader of the league's best team, Atlanta, who got an impressive 47 wins this season. Could for sure compete for MVP any other season.

3. Pawter Meowski: 3rd in points

I think my goalie Kay Lee should be running for MVP. I had to try and stop 100 shots in a single game. I am so tired after each game. I usually sleep at the arena, because I know I have to be in net again. I tried to talk to management to give me an off day, but they just tell me “you’re doing amazing”. So, I guess I will be in goalie every single game for rest of the season and next as well.

The MVP voting shouldn’t go to players who have millions of points. It should go to us goalies who have to try and save 100 shots a night. Goalies don’t get enough love around here in the SHL. I have learned since joining.

Who I don’t win MVP, then a goalie should win it. So my officially vote is if I don’t win it, no defensemen or scorer should get it, but a goalie.

It's time to beat the dead horse thoroughly into the ground here. Just like pretty much everyone has already said, Maine Timber's Cale Salad is the SMJHL MVP for season 69. No contest, no question. Hockey stats look like secret code to me and I hate looking at them, but Cale made it super easy for me. No one comes close at all for goals scored, literally. He lags behind a little bit in assists, but it is not by very much, and his goal lead boosts him way out of reach in point totals. Cale is in the top 10 mix of almost every other category as well. I think the only other case you could make for MVP would come out of the goalie ranks, because among skaters Salad very much has it in the bag. Jeff Newman is a standout, but the fact that he has such a huge force of players in front of him probably hurts his case.
