[2x Draft Media] Overview of the open spots
#1

This media article is going to be a quick review about the players the different teams have per position going into S70, and on top of this also a quick overview for S71 and S72 but those purely on a “broad” positional overview. With this I mean that instead of having left/right defense and left/right winger+center it will just be defender and attacker.

These statistics have been collected by the team rosters on the SHL forum on 9/3/2023, and will make the assumption that every player will be send down for the maximum amount of seasons, that every player will stay at their current team, and that every player is “worth” the same amount and thus there would be no difference between IA and actives, and the amount of TPE/banked cash someone has.  So this will purely be an amount of players per (broad) position per team overview.

Before going to the teams let’s first start with a quick overview of the stats:
Players per season:
This graph shows all players each team has in every season, divided by position. These are G (Goalie), D (Defender), F (Forward), and T (Total).

Players per team in S70:
This is a overview of how many players in each position every team has in S70.

Onto the teams and let’s start with Anchorage Armada who last season came in 8th during the regular season making it to the 2nd round (quarter-finals) of the play-offs. At the end of S69 they had 2 goalies, 6 defenders, and 10 forwards for a total of 18 players. But for S70 it seems like that number will be lowered quite a bit with 1 goalie 1 defender and 3 forwards being aged out of the SJHML bringing it to 1/5/7 G/D/F. With the standard seeming to be a 2/6/9 G/D/F split it does seem like Anchorage Armada might be searching for at least 1 goalie, and 1 defender. With 2 forwards also being needed to get to the 2/6/9 ratio. Looking a bit more in specifics Anchorage will have obviously 1 goalie. For defenders Anchorage Armada will have 2 right defensive and 3 left defensive players, which means their 1 defensive player for next season will most likely be a right defender. For forwards Anchorage Armada has 3 centers and left wingers, and only 1 right winger which does mean that the 2 forwards will most likely both be right wingers. Obviously a team can decide to play a left winger/center as a right winger, and a left defensive player as a right defensive player if there are better left wingers/centers/left defenders. Looking further on to S71 and S72 it does seem like Anchorage Armada will keep this need of some players on every position going. With S71 having another 3 defenders, and 3 forwards be aged out to bring Anchorage Armada back to 1/2/4 G/D/F, and in S72 having a goalie, and 2 forwards leaving bringing the team back to 0/2/2 G/D/F. Which does show the Anchorage Armada will in the next few seasons need to replace both of their goalies, and has a bigger forwards need than defensive need.

Then onto the 2nd team on the list the Carolina Krakens. The Carolina Krakens ended 7th in the regular season, making it to the 3rd round (semi-finals) of the play-offs. At the end of S69 the Carolina Krakens had 2 goalies, 4 defenders, and 10 forwards for a total of 16 players. It does show that the Krakens at the end of S69 only had 4 defenders instead of the most often seen 6 defenders. For S70 the Krakens will lose 1 goalie, 1 defender, and 3 forwards because of them aging out of the SJHML. This will bring them back to 1/3/7, which compared to the average 2/6/9 means the Krakens will need 1 goalie, 3 defenders, and 2 forwards. Looking at the more specific positions the Krakens have obviously 1 goalie instead of the average of 2 goalies, their defensive players are 1 right, and 2 left defenders. Which does mean that for the “standard” of 3 in each on-ice positions will mean the Krakens are looking for 2 right defenders and 1 left defender. In forwards the Krakens will be having 1 right winger, 4 left wingers, and 2 center players. Which will mean that to bring it to 3 the Krakens will be needing to get 2 right wingers, 1 center player, and then they will have 10 forwards because of the 4 left wingers. Looking at the S71 squad the Carolina Krakens will lose another defensive player, and 3 forwards bringing their squad back to 1/2/4 G/D/F, and for S72 the Krakens will lose their goalie, 1 defender, and 2 forwards bringing them back to 0/1/2. So the Krakens in the next few seasons seem to need every position in around the “normal” variation.

Onto the 3rd team in the Colorado Raptors. The Raptors came in 10th during the regular season, and didn’t make the play-offs during S69. At the end of S69 the Raptors had 3 goalies, 5 defenders, and 9 forwards making their total squad size 17 players. For S70 they will lose 2 of the defenders, meaning they will still have a 3/3/9 G/D/F variation. This does mean that to get to the “standard” 2/6/9 squad size the Raptors will only need to get 3 more defenders. Looking into the individual positions the Raptors have 2 right defensive players, and 1 left defensive player meaning they will need to get defensive players on both sides. Another interesting observation is that while the Raptors do have 9 forwards, 5 of those are centers, and they only have 1 left winger. Of course they could play the centers on the left wing, but the Raptors might also be searching for another left winger. Overall the defensive players do seem to be the main goal for the Raptors during the next draft. Looking further ahead to S71 the raptors will lose 1 of the goalies, and 2 of the forwards bringing their squad to 2/3/7 G/D/F, which is still a pretty complete squad. But for the 72nd season the Raptors will be looking at losing their remaining 2 goalies, 2 of their defenders, and 3 forwards bringing the squad back to 0/1/4 G/D/F.

To our 4th team of this article with the Detroit Falcons. The Falcons came in 1st during the regular season, and in the play-offs they made it all the way to the finals before falling to Quebec City. During the last season the Falcons had 2 goalies, 6 defenders, and 11 forwards. For S70 they will be losing 4 of their defenders, and 4 of their forwards. This will bring their team back to 2/2/7 which does mean the Falcons might be searching for 4 defenders, and 2 forwards during the next draft to bring their squad back to the 2/6/9 size. Looking into the specifics the Falcons obviously have 2 goalies, their 2 defenders are evenly distributed having 1 defender on both the left and the right. In the forwards it does become surprising their 7 forwards are divided between 5 right wingers, and 2 centers. Obviously they could use the right wingers in different positions, but this does show they might be searching for 2 left wingers to at least get some left wingers on their S70 squad. Looking further ahead to S71 the Falcons will be losing most of their squad, losing their remaining 2 goalies, and 2 defenders, and on top of that also losing 3 more forwards. This does mean that even in the mid-term the Falcons might be searching towards getting some defenders, and goalies in because their current S71 squad is 0/0/4 G/D/F. For S72 the remaining 4 forwards will also be aging out of the SJHML, leaving the Falcons with no players for S72. So all-in-all it does look like the Falcons might be searching for defenders, left wingers, and maybe even a goalie to have one ready for S71.

So from Detroit we go to the Great Falls for our 5th team of this article in the Great Falls Grizzlies. The Grizzlies came in 4th during the regular season falling in the 2nd round (quarter-final) of the play-offs. During S69 the Grizzlies had 3 goalies, 6 defenders, and 9 forwards which comes out to a 3/6/9 G/D/F which is almost the 2/6/9 standard player count. For next season the Grizzlies will be losing 2 defenders, and 3 forwards which will bring them back to 3/4/6 G/D/F. To look a bit more into the specifics the Grizzlies will have only 1 right defender which does mean their 2 missing defenders will probably be replaced by right defenders. In terms of forwards it is a nice 2/2/2 spread over the right/left wing and center positions, which does mean their 3 forward slots will most likely be spread out evenly over the 3 forwards positions. Looking further into the future in S71 the Grizzlies are expected to lose 1 goalie, and 2 more defenders and forwards bringing their squad back to 2/2/4, while in S72 the Grizzlies are looking at losing another goalies, both of their defenders, and 3 forwards bringing their squad back to 1/0/1. This does mean for the current draft the chance of the Grizzlies picking up a goalie is unlikely, but the team will most likely be looking for both defenders, and forwards.

Onto the 6th entry with the Kelowna Knights, coming into 3rd during the regular season, and seeing their play-off run strand in the 2nd round (quarter-final). During the past season they had 2 goalies, 6 defenders, and 10 forwards bringing them to a total of 18 players with a 2/6/10 G/D/F spread which is very close to the  2/6/9 spread. In the next season the Knight will be losing only 1 defender, and 2 forwards which does mean their new spread is 2/5/8 G/D/F. This does show that the Knights have a S70 squad which is pretty close to complete with it only really showing a defender, and a forward spot being open for the 2/6/9 spread. Looking at the more specific positions it does show that their 5 defenders are spread between 2 on the right side, and 3 on the left side. In the forwards term it does show that they have 4 left wingers, and only 1 center player which does mean if they go with only 1 forward they will at most have 2 centers. Looking at what the Knight might be looking at for next season it is most likely going to be 1 right defender, and 1-2 center skaters. Looking into S71 the Knight will be losing 1 goalie, 1 defender, and 3 forwards bringing their squad to 1/4/5 G/D/F, and during S72 the Knight will be losing 3 defenders and forwards bringing the Knights to a 1/1/2 G/D/F. This does show that in the mid-term the Knights might be looking at getting some forwards in.

Let’s continue with our 7th team in Maine Timber. The Timbers?, I hope it is the Timbers because that is what I am going to be calling them from now on. The Timbers ended up in 2nd during the regular season, and the 2nd round (quarter-finals) in the play-offs in their S69 run. At the end of S69 the Timbers had 2 goalies, 6 defenders, and 11 forwards (2/6/11 G/D/F). Of these players the Timbers will be losing 1 defender and 1 forwards, which does mean they have 2/5/10 G/D/F for S71 which shows that the Timbers only might need 1 more defender. Looking at the specific positions it mostly shows the same with Timbers only having 2 left defenders, while having 3 right defenders which shows that the Timbers will most likely be going for a left defender to bring their defender count up to 6. Looking at the forward position there is something interesting because despite the Timbers having 10 forwards, they only have 1 right winger (with 4 left wingers, and 5 centers) but with the Timbers already having 10 forwards I don’t see it as too likely they will be picking up a right winger. Looking into future seasons, for S71 the Timbers will be losing another 3 defenders, 2 forwards, and 1 of their goalies bringing their squad to 1/2/8 G/D/F. which does show that in the mid-term the Timbers might be needing some more defenders in the mid-term. For S72 they will be losing another defender, and 5 of their 8 forwards bringing the squad back to 1/1/3 G/D/F, which does show that in the long-term the Timbers will be needing some forwards as well. But it might be unlikely that the Timbers will be picking up a lot of players, especially forwards during this draft.

Onto team number 8 in the Nevada Battleborn. The Battleborns ended 9th in the regular season, while their play-off run ended in the first round. At the end of S69 the Battleborns had 2 goalies, 6 defenders, and 11 forwards (2/6/11 G/D/F) of which they will be losing 1 defender and 3 forwards for S70 which will bring their squad to 2/5/8 G/D/F for a total of 15 players. To get to the 2/6/9 G/D/F squad the Battleborns will be needing 1 defender, and forward. Looking into the specific positions we do see something interesting. That is that while in defense their 5 players are spread between 3 right defenders, and 2 left defenders. Their 8 forwards are split up between 2 right wingers, and 6 left wingers, while the Battleborns at this moment has no centers in their S70 squad. This can mean that the Battleborns will be looking to pick up more than 1 forwards, and will be looking at centers for these forward positions. For S71 the Battleborns will be losing 1 goalie, 2 defenders, and 1 forward bringing their team back to 1/3/7 G/D/F, which does show that the Battleborns in the mid-term don’t have to focus that much on their forward players, while in S72 the Battleborns will lose another defender which brings them back to 1/2/4 (G/D/F) which is the highest amount of players in their S72 squad so far. This does show that the Battleborns don’t have a big need during this draft compared to the other 7 teams in the long-term, but will be looking at defenders, and forwards around equally in the long-term with defenders being more important in the short-and-mid-term and forwards becoming more important in the long-term.

From Nevada we go to Newfoundland to the Newfoundland Berserkers. Last season the Berserkers came in 5th during the regular season, while making it to round 3 (semi-final) in the play-offs. With the Berserkers we have now had every time being eliminated in round 3. The Berserkers during the last season had 2 goalies, 6 defenders, and 10 forwards. For next season the Berserkers will be losing 3 defenders, and 1 forwards bringing their squad back to 2/3/9 G/D/F for a total of 14 players. It is instantly obvious that  the defenders are the Berserkers, their biggest squad problem to fix for the next draft. Looking into the individual positions there is also something interesting, this is that their 3 defenders are all 3 right defenders meaning currently the Berserkers have no left defenders for next season, this position might be the position at the top of their draft list. In terms of the 9 forwards it isn’t divided in the equal 3/3/3 format, but is in a 5/2/2 right wing/left wing/center format. Which might mean that if the Berserkers are going to be getting a forward, they might be looking at either left wingers or more likely centers. Looking towards future seasons, it does quickly become obvious that in S71 their defender amount will be going even lower, with the Berserkers losing 1 goalie, 2 defenders, and 3 forwards for S71 bringing their squad back to 8 players in a 1/1/6 G/D/F scale, which does show the need for defenders in the mid-term. For S72 the Berserkers will be losing all 6 of their remaining forwards going back to a 1/1/0 G/D/F squad. Which shows that despite the Berserkers being really good in forwards for the short-and-mid-term in the long-term the forwards will be the position that goes empty, which might mean that despite the Berserkers technically having enough forwards, that they might be looking to pick up a forwards to start getting that skater ready for S72.

Let’s now go to the city which at the point of writing this will probably be having a party, with the Quebec City Citadelles coming in as the 10th team of this article. Coming into 6th during the regular season the Citadelles showed their worth in the play-off winning it all and becoming the SJHML S69 champions. At the end of their championship season the Citadelles had 2 goalies, 7 defenders, and 12 forwards for a total of 21 players, which is the biggest squad of all teams. For S70 they will be losing 1 defender, and 3 forwards still keeping the 2/6/9 ratio for S70 without needing to get any new players, and being only 1 of 2 teams (the other being the Timbers) who have 17 players for S70 which is the highest amount of players of any team in S70. Looking into the individual positions we see a nice nearly-equal divide, with the only positions being off the 2 goalies, and 3 skaters in every other position being the left wing position only having 2 skaters, and the center position having 4 skaters. For S71 the Citadelles will lose 1 goalie, 2 defenders, and 2 forwards to bring their team back to 1/4/7 G/D/F which does show a tendency of in the mid-term needing each position around equally. During S72 the Citadelles will be losing their last goalie, and 1 more defender and forward. This will bring their S72 squad to 0/3/6 G/D/F for a total of 9 players. Honestly looking at their numbers I don’t really see any position the Citadelles need to get new players in, having the luxury of deciding themselves who they want with a team which has just won the championship.

The Regina Elk is next on the list. The Elks came in 11th during the regular season, having their play-off run end in the first round. At the end of S69 the Elks had 2 goalies, 7 defenders, and 9 forwards under contract, being the only team with more than 6 defenders during S69. For next season the Elks will be losing 2 defenders, and 4 forwards bringing their team back to 2/5/5 G/D/F. Which shows that the Elks has enough goalies, and is only missing 1 defender for the 2/6/9 spread, but their forwards are “missing” 4 players, which does show that the Elks will most likely be looking for defenders during this draft. More specifically for the defenders the spread is 3/2 right/left defense. But in forwards it does seem that most of the problems are from the Elks not having any centers for S70, having 3 right wingers, 2 left wingers, and 0 centers. This will mean that the Elks are most likely to be looking for 1 left defender, 1 left winger, and 3 centers. Looking further into the future for S71 the Elks will be losing both of their goalies, 1 defender, and 1 more forwards bringing the team to 0/4/4 G/D/F. This could mean that the Elks might also be looking at a goalie so that there is someone ready for S71. For S72 the forward problem in the Elks becomes even bigger with them losing 1 defender and 3 more forwards bringing the team back to 0/3/1 G/D/F.

Onto team number 12 with the St. Louis Scarecrows. The scarecrows came in 14th during the regular season, seeing their play-off run strand in round 1. The Scarecrows at the end of S69 had the 2 goalies, 6 defenders, and 9 forwards for the 2/6/9 G/D/F spread. Going into S70 the Scarecrows will be losing 1 goalie, 1 defender, and 1 forward which does seem to mean that the Scarecrows will most likely be looking to replace these 3 lost players, and go back to the 2/6/9 spread. Looking into the positions specifically, it does show that currently the defenders for S70 are spread 4/1 right/left defenders, while the forwards are spread 3/3/2, right wing/left wing/center. Because of this it does seem like the Scarecrows will be looking at getting 1 goalie, 1 left defender, and 1 forward preferably a center. Going further ahead into S71 the Scarecrows will be losing 2 defenders, and 1 forwards bringing the team back to 1/3/7 G/D/F which does show that mid-term defenders are probably the most important position for the Scarecrows, while for S72 they are losing 2 more defenders, and 5 of the forwards bringing the team back to 1/1/2 G/D/F which does mean that in the long-term the forwards are also becoming sparse. Because of this it does show that short-term the Scarecrows will probably be looking at getting 1 player for Goalies, defenders, and forwards. While if they have some free spots they might be looking at getting some extra defenders/forwards for their mid and long-term position problems.

Onto the 2nd to last team now in the Vancouver Whalers. The Whalers have gotten a regular season standing of 12th, while being one of the 2 teams who didn’t participate in the play-offs. At the end of S69 the Whalers had 2 goalies, 5 defenders, and 11 forwards for a total of 18 player, which they will only be losing 2 of for S71, the 2 being a defender and a forwards bringing their team to 2/4/10 G/D/F. Looking at the more specific positions, it does look like the Whalers have their 4 defenders in a 1/3 spread to right/left defender, while having their 10 forwards in a 4/1/5 spread for right wing/left wing/center. This might indicate that they want to fill up 2 more defender spots to get back up to 6 defenders with right defenders, but might also indicate that the Whalers might be looking at maybe 1 left winger. Going further onto S71 the Whalers will only be losing 2 more defenders bringing the team back to 2/2/10 and definitely showing that in the mid-term the Whalers need to think about their defensive depth, because even 2 seasons in the future the Whalers are looking like a team with good depth in offense, and in the goal. For S72 the Whalers do get a goalie problem though with both of their goalies leaving, and 2 forwards also being gone bringing the team back to 0/2/8 with which the Whalers are the biggest S72 team in the SJHML at the current moment. All-in-all this does show that the Whalers might be focused on getting 1 or 2 defenders out of the draft, and for the rest being pretty free in who they want to have.

Onto the last team in the Yukon Malamutes. The Malamutes ended 13th during the regular season, and fell in the first round of the play-offs. The Malamutes at the end of S69 had 3 goalies, 6 defenders, and 9 forwards in their squad bringing the squad to 3/6/9 G/D/F. For S70 the Malamutes will be losing 1 goalie, 1 defender and 1 forward. This will bring them back to 2/5/8 G/D/F which does show that the Malamutes will most likely be looking at replacing the defender and forward. Looking into the specific positions it does show that the defender has the biggest chance to be replaced by a left defender seeing how they currently have 3 right defenders, and 2 left defenders for S70. In the forward position the most likely position will be right wing as the Malamutes currently only have 1 right winger, but on the other forward positions the Malamutes do have 2 left wingers, and 5 centers. This might mean that for S70 it is most likely the Malamutes will be looking at getting a left defender, and a right winger (and maybe another winger). For S71 the Malamutes will be losing 2 defenders, and 1 forward bringing the team to 2/3/7 G/D/F and showing that the Malamutes in the mid-term might be looking at getting some extra defenders in. In S72 the Malamutes will be losing another defender, and 2 more forwards bringing the squad back to 2/2/5 G/D/F for 9 players in total which does show that the Malamutes got their goalie position in a extremely good position being the only team to have already have 2 goalies in S72.

So all-in-all how is it looking for the different positions for this draft. Let’s start with the Goalies which might not be looking too good, as there are only 3 teams who won’t have 2 goalies next season in the Armada, the Krakens, and the Scarecrows. But looking at the mid-term the Falcons, and the Elks will both be losing both of their goalies for S71. Of course this list hasn’t taken IA’s into account and it could be the case that there are some teams who might want an active goalie to replace their IA goalie.
Looking further into defenders with the expectation of every team wanting 6 defenders this would mean that there is currently only 1 team (the Citadelles) who have this 6 defenders amount. With the Armada, the Knights, the Timbers, The Battleborn, the Elks, the Scarecrows, and the Malamutes all having 5 defenders, while the Grizzlies and the Whalers only have 4, the Krakens, Raptors, and Berserkers being on 3 defenders, and the Falcons even only having 2 defenders, and also the Falcons having none for S71. This means that assuming every team gets to 6 and not further there are 38 defender spots free. While within the existing 60 defenders, it does seem like right defenders are a bit more represented with there being 32 right defenders, compared to 28 left defenders in the SJHML S70 rosters at this moment.
Then lastly the forwards where I am once again gonna assume every team wants 9 forwards (3 for each position). If this is true there are currently 5 teams (Raptors, Timbers, Berserkers, Citadelles, Whalers) who have 9 or even 10 forwards. Then there are 4 more with 8 forwards (Knights, Battleborn, Scarecrows, Malamutes), 3 with 7 forwards (Armada, Kraken, Falcons), and 1 with 6 and 5 being the Grizzlies, and the Elk respectively. Assuming every team who doesn’t have 9 forwards yet will go to the 9 forwards there are currently 55 spots for forwards left. When looking at the different forward positions the current 111 forwards are divided 37/36/38 Right Wing/Left Wing/Center respectively. So just like with the defenders there isn’t a big gap in any of the forward positions compared to the rest.

Of course a lot can still change, trades can happen, players can get dropped, players can be called up earlier than the 4th season, free agents could get picked up, and there is probably some other way how this could change that I don’t know of at this moment.

Damn that's a massive media!

Teams have some 155 tpe inactive players that will be released after the draft so it's hard to really calculate all the roster spot available right now.
But you spot some weaknesses that teams will try to fill in the upcoming draft to maintain a good roster for seasons to come.

Yeah in hindsight I should have probably looked at the 155 IA players, but didn't really want to rewrite the full article as it took quite a bit of time Smile

Yo wtf Chicken going hard. Let's go!

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
