With the Season 70 campaign coming to an end with the completion of the Season 71 SHL Entry Draft we now turn to reflect on this years draft and the season as a whole. First off, a major congratulations to The Newfoundland Berserkers sweeping the regular season champions, The Maine Timber in the Four Star Cup Finals and taking home one of the most desired trophies in simulation sports. Also congratulations to The Maine Timber on a hard fought season and on taking home the regular season championship as well as making it all the way to the Four Star Cup Finals. Finally, a huge congratulations to all the SMJHL rookies who were drafted today. This rookie draft class was by far the strongest draft class that I have ever seen in the entirety of my short history of being a part of the Simulation Hockey League. This is also the weakest draft class I have ever seen mainly because it is the only draft class I have ever seen however that definitely should not take away from all the young talent this year. Now on to an analysis of this year’s draft.

With the First overall pick the San Francisco Pride selected Levin Schattenaxt, a right winger from The Great Falls Grizzlies.  Schattenaxt was the obvious choice for the Pride, as a long time veteran of the SHL he definetly knows his way around the league and will be a reliable player for the Pride in the years to come. Schattenaxt finished last season with 289 TPE and over 98 million dollars in his bank account as well as nine goals, 29 assists and a plus 9 rating throughout his season with the Grizzlies.

With the second overall pick The Tampa Bay Barracuda traded their second overall pick to the Toronto North Stars for their third overall pick this draft and a season 73 second round pick. This is really where my mock draft began to fall apart. The North Stars used this pick to select veteran forward Mercedes Bayle who finished last season with 303 TPE, 22 goals, 31 assists and over 98 million dollars after playing for the Regina Elk. Toronto also looks for Bayle to begin to make an impact in the lineup soon.

The Edmonton Blizzard then traded up to the third overall pick with the Tampa Bay Barracuda to select draft class TPE leader Furious Chicken. Chicken played defense for the Yukon Malamutes and was a huge part of their playoff run, finishing with 2 goals, 19 assists, and averaging a whopping 19 minutes on the ice per game he helped lead Yukon into the semifinals.

The San Francisco Pride selected Logan Webb with the fourth overall pick. Webb has been around the league since almost the beginning joining as far back as season four. He has an outstanding bank balance of over 118 million dollars and amassed an impressive 21 goals and 26 assists after being drafted only 21st overall by the Kelowna Knights in this past years SMJHL draft.

The San Francisco Pride had back to back picks where they selected Dominik Winters, a forward from the St. Louis Scarecrows who was drafted third overall in the SMJHL draft. Winters had an impressive season with 11 goals and 33 assists especially considering his placement on a rebuilding Scarecrows team which was a main reason why he finished the season with a minus forty two plus minus rating. Winters will undoubtedly play a major role in the future of not only the St. Louis Scarecrows but now The San Francisco Pride as well.

The Los Angeles Panthers selected Oliver Castillon from the SMJHL powerhouse Colorado Raptors. Castillon finished last season with 16 goals and 30 assists as well as a plus 12 plus minus rating. He was also a major contributor in helping the entirety of this seasons rookies finish their mock drafts so all the rookies owe him a huge thank you.

Possibly the steal of the draft, the Baltimore Platoon selected star defenseman and potential Rookie of the Year, Bellamy Blake after he fell to the seventh overall pick. Blake finished last season with 15 goals, 37 assists and a team leading 11 plus minus which helped The Vancouver Whalers work their way into a playoff spot after starting the season as the junior team with the lowest average TPE. Blake has been a star so far for Vancouver and has proved himself as not only a top rookie in this draft class but one of the top defensemen in the entire SMJHL. The Platoon fans are definitely happy with this selection and they will most definitely tune into some Vancouver games to watch Blake dominate.

After trading down from their earlier round picks the Tampa Bay Barracuda selected Max Carnage with the eighth pick in this year’s draft. Another high scoring forward Carnage finished this past season with 24 goals and 18 assists after averaging only 15 minutes of ice time per night. Carnage is another fantastic player who could arguably be a first overall pick in any other draft class but luckily for the Barracuda he fell to the eighth pick. Carnage also looks to continue to make an impact in the coming season with SMJHL contender The Nevada Battle Born.

With the ninth pick in this year’s draft the Baltimore Platoon continued bulking up on the defensive end by selecting defenseman Jay Brezi. Another player who was stuck on a rebuilding St. Louis Scarecrows squad Brezi suffered from a minus 35 plus minus rating but began showing his dominance by finishing with five goals and 12 assists along with averaging over twenty one minutes of time on ice per game. Brezi also has a substantial forty six million dollars which will help him continue to make a strong defenseman for the Platoon franchise.

Another St. Louis Scarecrow player selected in the first round shows the Scarecrows have a bright future ahead of them. With the tenth pick in the draft the Minnesota Monarchs selected left wing Marshall Madden. With only 243 TPE so far this season Madden showed he could still contribute on the ice by tallying 13 goals and 15 assists. With a minus 44 plus minus rating Madden with most definitely begin to improve his stats as the St. Louis Scarecrow’s young core continues to grow and develop.

The Hamilton Steelhawks got a fantastic player with the eleventh pick of the draft in Inactive Forever. After earning 301 TPE so far this season the talented young Vancouver forward led all rookies in scoring with 27 goals. The only potential flaw in Inactive Forever is his small bank balance however that should not be a problem for Inactive Forever or the Steelhawks because they got a great locker room guy and dedicated player who is a favorite for SMJHL Rookie of the Year.

After getting an inside scoop prior to the draft from longtime housemate, brother, and Co general manager of the Baltimore Platoon that he was likely to be selected ninth overall by the Platoon, Vancouver Whalers forward Thomas Liebold was ecstatic. After not being selected with the ninth pick reports said that Liebold blubbered like the whales the Vancouver Whalers hunt. The Platoon management made it up to Liebold by trading up from the fifteenth overall pick to the twelfth overall pick in a trade that included The Buffalo Stampede sending veteran defenseman Billy Brooks for a season 74 Platoon first round pick in addition to the swapping of this drafts 12th and 15th picks. Liebold  Finished this past season with 18 goals and 45 assists which was good enough for third amongst rookies in points which may potentially put him in the running as a candidate for Rookie of the Year. He also claims to be a defensive forward but had a lack luster minus 2 plus minus rating this past season. The addition of Liebold, Blake and Brezi are a strong indicator that the Baltimore Platoon will be a force to recon with in the coming years and are a strong reason why many SHL fans believe that the Platoon had the strongest draft this season out of all the SHL teams. It is also important to add that I am a very unbias source.

With the thirteenth pick of the draft the Toronto North Stars selected Andre Latreille who is most likely related to forwards Josh and Kyle Latreille. Andre finished last season with 14 goals and 25 assists along with a very impressive plus 29 rating while averaging almost 18 minutes time on ice per game. Latreille has 289 TPE and a bankroll of almost twenty six million dollars

With the 14th pick of the SHL draft the Manhattan Rage selected Maine Timber defenseman Mick Mayhem. Mayhem finished last season with seven goals and nineteen assists as well as a plus 20 plus minus. He was also a major contributing factor on helping the Timber win the regular season along with making a deep playoff run where they lost in the finals. Mayhem has 274 TPE and a bankroll of over three million dollars.

After trading down from the 12th pick with the Baltimore Platoon the Buffalo Stampede selected center Shootin Blanks. Another product of the Maine Timber, Blanks finished last season with twelve goals and twenty two assists along with a plus 32 plus minus rating. Currently sitting at 289 TPE and a bankroll of over ten million Blanks will help contribute to a bright future in not only Maine but now in Buffalo too.

The Hamilton Steelhawks happily selected veteran center Thomas Sawschuk from the Nevada Battle Born with the sixteenth overall pick. Another rookie leader in goals Sawschuk finished the season with 27 goals and 18 assists while only averaging 16 minutes of time on ice per game. He also finished with a plus eleven plus minus rating which helped lead the Battle Born to a dominant season who outscored their opponents by seventy eight. Sawschuk finished with 257 TPE and a big bank account of almost 74 million dollars.

With the seventeenth overall pick the New England Wolfpack traded up to pick defenseman Adelbert Steiner in a trade that included a season 72 second round pick and the swapping of picks twenty and seventeen with the Minnesota Monarchs. Steiner was an offensive threat at the blueline for the Berserkers last year where he has ten goals and twenty one assists while also having a plus 20 plus minus rating and being out on the ice for nearly twenty minutes a game. Steiner has a respectable 287 TPE and fourteen million dollar bank balance which will help him continue to contribute to the Berserkers success and make an impact soon with the Wolfpack.

The Philidelphia Forge selected right wing Barg Hazbite from the Great Falls Grizzlies. Hazbite finished with 14 goals and 16 assists and a minus 49 plus minus. Although his plus minus does not show it he will likely be a good fit in the Forge lineup in the coming years with a current TPE of 283 and a bankroll of 13 million dollars.

The Winnipeg Aurora got a late first round gem in veteran forward Jonny Fourstar. Another product of the talented young Vancouver Whaler rookie class, Fourstar finished last season with 18 goals and 37 assists as well as a plus minus of plus 10 which was good enough for second best on the Whalers team. Jonny has an impressive 298 TPE and 64 million dollars which makes it very surprising that he fell to the Aurora for the nineteenth overall pick. Jonny Fourstar will make a huge impact in the Winnipeg lineup in the coming seasons but not before he continues to try to win a Four Star Cup with his Vancouver teammates.

With the last pick in the first round of the Season 71 Simulation Hockey League draft the Minnesota Monarchs selected Boho Biscuit after swapping picks with the New England Wolfpack and receiving a season 72 second round pick as compensation.  The Monarchs still got a talented young player who currently sits at 228 TPE and about two million dollars in his bank account. Boho had a respectable year scoring 5 goals and assisting his teammates 18 times. He also had a minus 13 plus minus rating and averaging almost 19 minutes time on ice per game with his junior team the Regina Elk.

Overall this years SHL draft class seems to have an especially strong group of young players throughout the first round with many talented players being taken throughout the entire draft, I look forward to seeing this draft class take the SHL by storm in the coming seasons
