Aiming Higher

21 goals, 26 assists, a negative 3 rating, 169 hits, 1 game winning goal…just not good enough.

Last season was a tough one for Logan Webb, 47 points, just 47 points. He came into the SMJHL with a chip on his shoulder so sure his midget and tripe A experience and success would be enough to carry him into the limelight. And he was good, but not good enough.

Being drafted in the second round 26th overall was a bit of a surprise to Webb, he figured his name alone would have carried him into the first round somewhere. He had a legend to live up too, but there would be concerns from GMs. He did everything he could pre-draft to address those concerns, was active in the Media, let GMs know what he had done in the past, why he was there, still he fell. Instead of being mad he used it for motivation. He wanted to show each GM and coach they made a mistake, and he worked his but off to be game ready on day 1.

Still no matter how hard he worked Logan Webb had to have felt like the season was a wash. 47 points. He busted his ass, working on his skating. 47 points. He worked on his stick handling, shooting, passing, even his defense (which was not his strong suit). 47 points. He spoke with senior players, and they assured him he was doing everything right. Took tips and watched how they practiced. 47 points. He even started to get power play time at the end of the season as a reward to the hard work he put in during the season. 47 points. Still, all he could do was finish somewhere in the top 80 for scoring in the SHL that season. TOP 80 for an offensive forward that always excelled! 47 POINTS!

And now this season he is going to be a focal point for the Knights, and he must wonder, will he be able to improve enough to help them succeed. Will he manage to score more goals, add more assists, find a way to help his team win? They have loss so much talent this off season. So many friends moving up to the big leagues, one that has been traded out. There are glaring holes on the Knights right now, holes that were not there last season and he couldn’t do enough last season to see the team succeed. Making the playoffs was not success. Scoring 21 goals was not a success. 47 points was not a success. This season he needs to take a big step forward.

Perhaps Webb is putting too much on his shoulders, but he has quickly become a focal point for the Knights, a building block, and a foundation piece. The question will become can he do enough, be enough to help lift this team up and win that elusive Four Star Cup everyone is trying to achieve. Or will this be another season, with another missed opportunity, with an amazing group that deserves to enjoy lifting that trophy. Anyway it turns out 47 points will not be enough, he needs to find a way to get more do more and be more for one amazing group of players.
