[x2 Draft Media] Team Needs Post Draft Pt.1
#1

With the excitement that was the S71 SMJHL draft now out of the way teams need to find trades and free agents that will help them plug the holes they left in their rosters. I plan to split this article into 5 parts, the first four where we look at where each teams holes are doing three teams per part, and the second where I discuss how their GMs can fix them.

Armada Anchorage Armada:

Before the draft Anchorage had:

2/2 Goalies, while one of these goalies looks like a star and is likely to be called up next year, their backup hasn't improved since being drafted and should be in line for an upgrade
7/6 Defensemen, Anchorage's best defenseman Gnabe Dabson is in the same position as their starting goaltender, the rest of the Anchorage defensive squad seem to still be in the improvement phase, while at least 2 of their bottom 3 defenseman needing replaced with more motivated players
5/8 Wingers, Being 3 wingmen short Anchorage has plenty of room here for fresh faces, while their left wingers look like absolute studs this season, the right wing has 2 improving players and their last winger seems to be happy just getting to play and coasting
2/4 Centers, Anchorage's only players at this position are already eyeing up spots in the SHL for next season, this leaves the 3rd and 4th line positions open, but there isn't likely to be much upward movement available here until next season.

Anchorage used one pick in each of the first four rounds, including the first overall pick, let's look how they spent them:

RD 1: Defenseman Kazuchika Okada, with their first pick Anchorage has filled one of their 2 available defensive pairing slots, while the player here is great, you can't help but wonder if they had more pressing needs.
RD 2: Defenseman Dan Johnston, with their second pick Anchorage now has all the defenseman they need, once again though this player is good, but the team really seems to have a bigger need for forwards this draft.
RD 3: Right Wing Joseph Reed, with all their defensive pairings filled, Anchorage finally takes a forward, this player seems like a great pickup and we can likely expect them to take the 3rd right winger slot.
RD 4: Right Wing Mike Rogers Jr., to end the night Anchorage grabbed another winger bringing their total to 7, Mike Rogers should be an excellent addition to play across from Reed.

Where Anchorage stands now:

After the draft Anchorage now has 2 goalies, 9 defensemen, 7 wingers, and 2 centers. Look for them to pick up any undrafted wingers and centers they can and for them to trade out or drop their bottom 3 defensemen.

Kraken Carolina Kraken:

Before the draft Carolina had:

2/2 Goalies, both goalies on this team have a lot to improve before their spots are solidified a motivated upstart can easily take the starting goaltender spot.
2/6 Defensemen, once again while Carolina has players filling this position it seems the top pairing isn't set in stone, look for the new draftees to work hard to replace their current pairing, though with the number of spots left open you can still expect both of these two to be playing next season.
10/8 Wingers, Carolina seems to have a glut of wingmen any wingmen that are drafted in will be hard pressed to make the starting roster any given night, but fourth line spots do look ripe for some turnover
3/4 Centers, All 3 of Carolina's centers are known hard workers, the main thing that seems to separate them is age, any newly drafted centers are likely to be stuck on the fourth line

The Kraken used 5 picks this draft including 2 in the second round:

RD 1: Defenseman Lazer Gato, a great pick for a team that desperately needs defensemen, look for this cat to be playing top pairing minutes early in the season
RD 2: Defensemen Westley Kirkpatrick and Bjorn Arneson, with two more picks Carolina grabs two more defensemen, with 3 picks in, Carolina seems to have done a great job fleshing out their roster.
RD 4: Goaltender rony mcdoudelberg, with their defense situation mostly addressed Carolina has now grabbed a goaltender, look for him to be fighting for the starter job come season start.
RD 5: Right Wing Sam Del Vescovo, with most of their needs covered Carolina goes with a winger, don't know how to feel about this one as they already have a massive winger surplus, though this late in the draft you are just hoping the player has a decent work ethic and trying to bring in the best player available.

Where Carolina stands now:

After the draft Carolina had 3 goalies, 5 defensemen, 11 wingers, and 3 centers. With a post-draft trade Carolina has grabbed themselves a fourth goaltender, and with his lauded work ethic it seems Carolina can expect a 3 way race for the starter position. Carolina has most of their spots filled so look for them to trade depth pieces from this point on, if they do anything at all.

Raptors Colorado Raptors:

Before the draft Colorado had:

2/2 Goalies, both of Colorado's goalies are known for their work ethic, they should hold these two for the remainder of the season.

5/6 Defensemen, a theme that will likely be recurring with Colorado but most of their defensemen seem like hard workers who will be stuck in their spots all season, look for a rookie or two to threaten the bottom two but that is all.

5/8 Wingers, Being 3 wingmen short Colorado like Anchorage has plenty of room here for fresh faces, though unlike Anchorage any players new to Colorado will be looking at sitting on the fourth line all season long.

5/4 Centers, All of Colorado's centers would do well on any other team's first or second line, no room for growth here.

With their roster quite well fleshed out, Colorado didn't pick until the fifth round:

RD 5: Left Wigers Burger King and Banana Sauce, these were great picks for the teams needs and with the picks coming this late in the draft grabbing two players that are guaranteed to be playing come season opener means they can only have upside.

Where Colorado stands now:

After the draft Colorado now has 2 goalies, 5 defensemen, 7 wingers, and 5 centers. at this point Colorado has pretty much everything they need to be competitive this season, look for them to sign a defensive free agent or trade a center out for a high pick or top defenseman of another team.

Trying to do a review of team's drafts by how well they did to address team needs. Pt 2 will be out before I head to bed tonight and will be on Detroit, Great Falls, and Kelowna as I continue down the list alphabetically, hopefully I finish this series before weeks end as I am enjoying the small amount of research I am putting into it.

Pic is the file I am basing original team needs on, hopefully it is mostly accurate.
