Kraken S70 Awards and S71 Captains
#1

While the post season may not have gone the way we wanted, Carolina feels we had a great season 70, and feel we had an even better draft going into number 71. With preseason getting under way now, it’s time to reflect in depth on both the previous season and the upcoming one. And what better way to do that with S70 awards and our S71 captains!

Awards

Slothface Leadership Award: Derek Martin
Frenchie is a clear winner for this award. There’s not a person around the league who could say a bad thing about him. His passion for the team and the league as a whole translates to his ability to support every player around, new and old. He’s always there to get the team motivated and raring to go for every game, and knows how to get the people ready to play their hearts out. Frenchie acts as a mentor for both teammates in Carolina all the way to fresh SMJHL prospects looking to make an impact in the league. He’s truly the epitome of a leader.
Christoph Klose Award – Top Forward: Derek Martin
Now that we’ve pumped the user’s tires, let’s do the same for his player. Martin had an unbelievable year, well above a point per game. He led the team in points (82), goals (43), and assists (39). The next highest players in points each had 73 in total. He was able to control the pace of play in any zone with an impressive 57.5% faceoff percentage. Not only that, Martin was able to maintain a 19.5% shooting percentage, proving himself to be a true sniper. As a leader of the team in almost every metric, he was the clear winner for this award. In my opinion, a great pick for rookie of the year in the majors next season.
Quilha Agante Award – Top Defenseman: Liam Logger and Andy Ceylon
This award was a well-deserved two-way tie. Logger was able to maintain an impressive (and team leading) plus/minus of 18 this season on the second line pairing. He achieved 46 takeaways compared to only 16 giveaways, and triple digit blocked shots at 100 flat, while still being able to produce incredible offense (see below). Ceylon’s offensive stats may not be as pretty, but this luckily this isn’t the “Best Offensive Defenseman Award”. Being on the first pairing, and therefore dealing with top line offenses around the league, his defensive stats are incredible. He had the second highest plus/minus of the team, 102 blocked shots, and a whopping 62 takeaways this season. Both defensemen truly stepped up this season to help shore up the back end, and equally deserve this award.
Petr Klimek Award – Best Two-Way Player: Liam Logger and FITTED PRIMETIME99 CUDDLES
It only makes sense that the two-way award is a two-way tie. This go around, we’ve got one defenseman who went above and beyond on offense, and a forward, put in a defenseman role, who went above and beyond on defense. Logger played exceptionally well defensively (see above award), but still managed to tally up 12 goals and 26 assists for a total of 38 points. Cuddles typically plays as a forward, but due to roster constraints, stepped up for the team and filled the role as a defenseman. Even as a defenseman, he managed to maintain an above average plus/minus for the team while still being a true playmaker on the back end with 32 assists. Both players were important parts for the team this season.
Jordan Nugent Hall Award – Most Dedicated Player: Derek Martin
More Frenchie hype? Say less. Once again, it’s hard to find someone so committed to making sure everyone is included and supported in getting familiar with the league. He gets the locker room going, but he does so much more behind the scenes that goes underappreciated. It’s hard to imagine a more dedicated player/user in the league, let alone for this team.
Kurtis Hunter Award – Team’s Choice MVP: Derek Martin
It’s hard not to be the MVP when you combine both the player’s and the user’s abilities. He’s the clear front runner for this award.
Alonzo Garbonzo Award – Rookie of the Year: Filip Svatos
Svatos had an incredible offensive year for a rookie. He was an assist machine, boasting a whopping 38 on the season, tied for the third for the entire team, and reached a total of 54 points. While the defensive play left a bit to be desired from a plus/minus of -13, he’s proven he can fill a solid role and will develop this defensive game over time. Expect a big year for him next year.
Michael Fitted Award – Best Demonstrates what it means to be a Kraken: Derek Martin
I think I can skip a description on this one. Frenchie displays every value we care about in the locker room. The clear winner, see above for the resume.

Captains

Captain – Johnny Wagner-Svenson
For those in the Carolina locker room, this should come as no surprise. A true veteran of the team and leader both in the locker room and on the ice. He has led by example for multiple seasons even without the C on his chest, and that shouldn’t change one bit for the upcoming season.
Assistant Captain – FITTED PRIMETIME99 CUDDLES
Anyone who knows Fitted knows the energy he can bring to the locker room. He’s an electricity factory that can motivate anyone to run through wall with him, cause you know he’ll be leading the charge. He’s always willing to step up and lead by example for the time, as he did filling the defenseman role this past season, but can motivate the squad just as much with a speech. He's got the passion that can help this leadership group bring the whole team to a championship.
Assistant Captain – Filip Svatos
The up and coming star of the Kraken is here ready to prove himself as a leader. A great rookie season combined with a fantastic locker room presence makes Svatos a shoe-in for the assistant captain role. He’s got everything to prove, but the entire team behind him is confident he’ll be up to the task.
