S74 SMJHL PT #2 - Season Preview
#31

Our preseason, and start of season, has looked pretty rough. We have a very young squad so something important for sure is to make sure that all of the rookies that were drafted for this season keep on being active and updating, with that I think we have a solid chance to make playoffs and also try to make it past the first round which would be a real statement. More specifically though, I think all of our three captains are the key to our long term success as well as leading us through this season. Arnošt Hlemýžď, Peanut and Jani Mänty are all top tier players in the league and while Peanut still has a season or so until fully developed in the SMJHL it is already evident that their contribution in the locker room cannot be underestimated in helping the rookies grow. As Arnošt Hlemýžď and Jani Mänty are fully developed (capped) it is to them we put our trust as we need to have these players lead the very young team as we develop.

The expectations for the Newfoundland Berserkers are tempered. They made a Finals appearance last year but recognize that a repeat like that is never a given. With every series but the Finals going at least six games the critics were quick to label this as a Cinderella run rather than a rightful appearance in the Finals. Looking at S74’s roster though there’s a few players that will be key to a repeat appearance and hopefully Finals win this year. I think Entropy Sanchez will be the offensive workhorse when it comes to points. This will be Sanchez’s third year with the Berserkers and he’s primed for a breakout year. Last year Entropy only had 3 goals but I think we see him set a season high this year. On defense Ho-Lee Smokes will make it difficult for opposing goal scorers to feel comfortable with the puck. A veteran Right Defense who isn’t afraid to get physical returns for their third year with this squad. Not known for their offensive output, he’s able to help the team by throwing his body around and making life difficult for the opposing team. And finally, I think the rookie Pierre Mailloux at center will make a splash. A potential front runner for Rookie of the Year, expectations are sky-high for Pierre. An all around great player, look for Pierre to be impactful on both offense, defense, and in the locker room.

With the Vancouver Whalers having a majority of their S73 moving on to the SHL, the expectations are high for the incoming rookie class to help establish a winning culture. As expected, the Vancouver Whalers finished middle of the pack in preseason with a record of 3-4-0.

3 players crucial to the Whalers success this season

Masked Stanger (G)- Scary Jerry was the Whalers starting goalie last season with a record of 26-8-2 and a save percentage of 0.916. This a huge need to fill and the Vancouver Whalers expect that Masked Stanger, taken at the end of the 3rd round (42nd pick), is the perfect fit. Stanger had a rough start to preseason with a record of 1-4 and a GAA of 5.81, but Stanger wasn't exactly getting much help from his teammates. The Whalers had the 2nd to worst goal differential at -10.

Niclas Wastlund (LD)- The Whalers lost a pair of defenseman in Bellamy Blake and Jaden Tanner who combined for 62 points last season. They look to replenish their blue line with promising rookie Niclas Wastlund who was drafted in the 2nd round. Like the rest of the Whalers, Wastlund had a slow start to preseason with a +/- of -3 and 1 point in 7 games played.

Bo Jangles/Kolen Henderson (RW)- The Whalers look to replace 2 PPG players in Inactive Forever and Aumy Junior II with Wingers Bo Jangles (drafted end of 2nd round) and Kolen Henderson (drafted in the 3rd). With each posting 3 points in 7 games this preseason, the Whalers will be expecting both wingers to the take a huge step forward during the regular season.

For Season 74, Nevada will be looking to gain their footing and look to compete in future seasons. Building up some future talent will be the goal but their top performers for the season will come from some of their more senior team members such as Aksel Vinsen. Vinsen is the most skilled forward on the roster and will need to lead the Battleborn up front.

On the back end there are a few who are deserving of a call out such as Sergey Ivanov, who will spark some offense from the back end whereas a player like Unspeakable Horror should help try and level out things in their defensive zone.

The last line of defense for the Battleborn is probably their most untested part of the team. The degree of success could hinge on the performance of Just Perfection, who should see the bulk of the starts, and the probable back up Cameron Kalashnikov.

Right now the team is not looking the greatest but we find ourselves in the middle of the mess right now at a 6-8-2 record. Unfortunately this was a lot lower than we hoped and we are looking to plan for the future. We have added some key pieces to ensure we make that happen in the future. Future star goalie, Cameron Kalashnikov will help lead this team as we look to the future. With additions of Literally Wizard and Caspian Leevi the future of the Battleborn looks bright but not for this season as we look to only be second in our division and 12th in the league. However things aren't totally negative as we see Aksel Vin and Cal Juice both having wonderful starts to the season in addition to the rookies. The defense has been doing great as well specifically I StirMyPudding, Sergey Ivanov and Unspeakable Horror. Battleborn are ready for the future!

The Maine Timber have become somewhat of a dynasty over the recent history of the SMJHL and that is mainly because they consistently know how to draft the right players and those players are able to step in and make an instant impact for the team. This season, Maine is coming off of their third 4 Star Cup and they are going to stick to the formula that has been working for them. Maine managed to grab a stacked draft class this season and these rookies are going to be the ones that are key to Maine's chances to repeat this season. In a league like this one you are at an incredible advantage if you have impactful players on each line and by drafting players like Edouard Lavoie, Mia Lavoie, and Jean Jacque Francois Jacque Jean with their first three picks. Maine got likely the three best players in the draft to continue to build on their already championship caliber squad.

Going into this SMJHL season, the most important players for the Anchorage Armada are ANCBOT1, ANCBOT2, and ANCBOT3. So far, these three players have combined for a whopping 25 points thus far - all playing minimal minutes for the Armada.

You could almost say that they have been almost robotic at scoring goals, like it is programmed into them to be able to contribute to the team on both offense and defense, it is crazy to me seeing what these players are doing in the SMJHL so far.

A breakout candidate for this season for the Armada could definitely be Jesus Murphy, who the Armada took with their first round pick this SMJHL draft. I think that Murphy has a great pedigree and could really contribute to the Armada at a high level, as long as his development stays up and he has a good attitude, he could lead the Armada for a great playoff push.

As the Raptors entered the season it was clear to some that it wasn't like the other season before. As the raptors started off hot and currently sit at a 12-5-1 record with players coming in clutch and helping the team amazingly as the season goes on. These players I will name are huge contributors to the team.

Brandon Gilleyes
This player is currently leading the team in goals scored, making huge waves when it comes to offense on the raptors managing to have the highest shooting percentage on the squad and he has been helping the Raptors with their hot streak as they continue into the season.

Xavier Beausoleil
Although he isn't the most prolific goal scorer on the raptors he has come in to help the team with assists leading the team in assists as they continue the season and it seems as if he will continue to assist his team like this.

Leonard Wood
This guy has carried the Raptors in the hitting department and if he can continue these numbers I feel as he could lead the league in hits.

Nationality: Usa

Regina is looking *okay* to start the season. It is unlikely that they plan on contending given the team's current roster, which allows for plenty of room for growth. The two obvious standouts for likely important players are Guy Incognito, one of our defenders, and Mac Turner, one of our wingers. The former will help limit how bad our losses are and contribute significantly to the smoothness of or offense - on the other hand, the latter will have to play a very important role in converting good movement into chances. Our last most prominent player is likely our goalie, Henri Losanov. Both of our current goalies are rookies, which means our defenders will have their work cut out for them, though admittedly I'm saying this as a rookie myself. I think our draft class was very impressive this season, but that also makes some important players on our team have lower starting & ceiling TPE for this season. Give us a season or two and we'll be in tip-top shape.

The St Louis Scarecrows are surer excited for the season to start! The first player that will be the key to success is the Scarecrow's 4th overall pick in the most recent SMJHL draft, and that is Charlie Slurpe. He will be looked upon to carry the load on the both offense and defense from the center position. This is a lot for a young rookie to do, but if the Scarecrows are successful this season, he will drive the success. Next up is Charlie van Keyzer, one of the goalies for the team. He will come in with a very young team in front of him, and Keyzer will need to make a lot of saves for this Scarecrows team to be successful. The third player is going to be Cameron Dallas, the gritty veteran who has been around for a few seasons now and knows what it takes to win and preform in clutch moments. He will be replied upon heavily to not only carry the team on the ice, but to also be a great leader off the ice and help out the many rookies on the team to grow.

Last season malamutes made the playoffs far and lost in the semifinals. The malamutes have added wellerman who has been phenomenal this season so far for his first season again at malamutes. Wellerman is a two way player who has good defense and offense can help the malamutes at any position needed. Wellerman has nine points this season so far this season. Wellerman has three goals and six assists within nineteen games played. Another malamute asset is Bobby tkachuky he has been awesome on the ice with twenty four  points so far this season with nineteen games played. He has eight goals and sixteen assists so far. Last but not least we have Langston Hardison-Laurent he has been doing very well on the ice. So far with nineteen games played Langston has fourteen goals along with nine assists with a total of twenty three points so far. The malamutes looking good and looking to continue and go to the playoffs and hope for a cup.
