S75 SMJHL PT #1 - New Places Due: Tuesday, February 13th @ 11:59pm PST

Robo Sven walked into the Vancouver locker room, but it wasn't for the first time. He'd been here before, reaching the top of the league by getting a cup as both a player and a GM. But now he was here to fine tune his new bionics and hopefully reach the top of the league again. His goals have never changed: to be the best Sven. He didn't see a lot of familiar faces, but it still felt good to be in a familiar place. He drew a few intrigued looks from his new teammates, which was to be expected due to his almost fully robotic body (minus his glorious handlebar mustache). He hit the ice with his new team and all doubt went away almost as quickly as it arrived. He spent some time with the top line, setting up goal after goal and building chemistry with his new team. He knew this would be a great "rookie" season.

Sin City, Home of the Nevada Battleborn. The first interaction with all of the new players, including me, was going to the Las Vegas Strip and making all of the rookies gamble at least 5k each on the night. We had our local US president and new RW1 start playing blackjack, in which all of his teammates and even the dealers were always making jokes about "Using his Head" or "Trying to get a Head Start". For the local Dutchman and new RD1, we had de Vries plating poker, in which he won 5 straight hands with a royal flush in there, in which he was promptly removed from the casino. The only problem was, de Vries wouldn't budge, so they had to send 5 security guys to transport him out, and they had to rotate him to get him out of the casino's small doors. The other rookies hung out at the bar for most of the time as well

Ana Söderström and Brayden Point are the newest members of the Detroit Falcons, and the team has so far been pretty welcoming to the pair. It's never easy to be in such a high-profile position such as being the starting goalie, especially at such a young age, but the other Detroit team members have been very helpful in making the transition easier. Emil Karlsson and Will Tomlander are helpful for having other Swedish-speaking players, and the team in general does a good job of being welcoming to their rookies and making them feeling comfortable. After a slow start, Ana has gone on a red-hot run with a winning streak and even a shutout against Newfoundland, and it's much easier to get used to new teammates and living in North America when things on the ice are going great. They might not have needed any formal welcoming for the two new members of the draft class, but Detroit still managed to make them feel like part of the team pretty easily.

The Nevada Battleborn has had a huge rookie class this year, and with it came lots of rookie shenanigans. We partook in two separate trips, one as a whole team to get everybody together and one with just the rookies so we could all get to know each other a bit with how many of us there were. The big one with everybody was a huge trip out to Vegas, and it was a great time. I lost $1600 at roulette tables but that's okay it's all apart of the gambling process. For the rookie trip, I demanded we went right back out to the casinos so I could win back everything I lost. It was a long night but after some skillful bets and shrewd financial decisions I am now $4300 in the negative. My entire rookie contract is gone, but that's just how it goes in Nevada. I will now be looking to win some performance bonuses so I can go and get my money back from the casinos.

When Scar Bealey entered the St. Louis Scarecrows locker room for the first time, something to him felt very familiar. He couldn’t QUITE put his finger on it though. Scar was immediately welcomed by management who tried to make him feel at home by asking his opinions on the team, and the locker room, and what improvements he felt would be nice for the team. Fellow draftee Alexa Johansen was also there, and was incredibly positive. Just from talking to her, Scar knew they’d be working hard together to restore St. Louis to its former glory, winning multiple cups and building another St. Louis dynasty together. The other Scarecrows who were there were also very welcoming, and nobody gave off any “cold shoulder” vibes. Scar knew this was where he was meant to be right away. Together with a great management team, and a lot of players doing whatever it takes to win, Scar is looking towards a hell of a future career in the SMJHL. (166)

My time so far with the Carolina Kraken has been awful. I entered the locker room and was given a humiliating role, had the team grilling the GM for picking me, and general unhappiness about my showing up and being on the team.

Since then, I got no points in my first few games and everyone was mad. I got benched despite all my hard work and have been off the ice for the recent run of good form. Everyone is actively celebrating my absence and praising these other rookies brought in to replace me. I don't know when I'll get to play again, but it's a very disheartening start to my experience with the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League.

I will not let this get me down though, I am going to continue to work hard and show the team that I belong in this league and on this team.

The fact that I have not been picked up by a team yet means that this is the perfect opportunity to advertise myself right now. I would love to tell all my favorite general managers what I want in a locker room. I provide an incredible and one of a kind atmosphere to the locker room. To be completely honest, I do not like having inactive locker rooms. As a former general manager, I know that pain. So I like to have active, wholesome locker rooms where we can all meme and laugh together while we all attempt to reach the same objective. Which is winning the big trophy of the minor leagues or even major leagues in the Simulation Hockey League, I also love music channels since I am a huge music nerd and I love having a place or a spot to talk about music. So please pick me up teams! I will provide you the best locker room atmosphere

Mark “The Tater Tot” Jagerson had high expectations for his locker entrance. After all everyone knows who his father is. The legend himself Makrus “The Tater” Jager. Mark decided to wear something casual so his teammate would know he is just like them even though his father is a hockey legend. Mark got his father to sign a few player cards so he could share them with the team. Mark hoped this would help inspire the team to start the season strong. Mark assumed that some of the players here probably looked up to his dad as a hero. When Mark entered the locker room he was surprised to see a few balloons and a welcome banner. It was not the welcome he expected. No catered meal or entertainment. Not even a giant cake. Mark still gave out the cards he brought and everyone said thanks but they were not as excited as he expected. Mark assumed they must be holding back to stay professional. After all its not a good look to fanboy over a player on the first day.

James looked up at the logo on the stadium, a large grizzly bear staring back at him. This was the right place, even though finding it was a pain. Montana with all of its farms and fields was a far cry from what he was used to back in Cold Lake. With a throaty sigh, James pocketed the paper with the address on it, hefted his bag over his shoulder, and entered the building.

Inside the locker room, James thought he heard snickers and hushed voices but paid it no mind. He wasn’t supposed to meet too many people today, since training hadn’t officially started.

“Hey, I’m her-”

Suddenly, a giant bear swung down into his face, and roars came from the room. Acting purely on instinct, the diminutive forward punched the bear in the face, pushing it away from him and taking a fighting stance… wait, was that a balloon? Uncontained laughter floated from the locker room as the rest of the team pulled the bear-shaped balloon back into its hiding place in the rafters. Standing at the front of the crowd was the Co-GM themself, giving a hearty wave.

“You think that was funny?” James couldn’t help but growl.

“I know it was.” Rankle chucked, then motioned James to join everyone else. “Though you’re just as tense as they said. Good to know. Now come on, the other new draftees are going to show up any minute. Keep standing in the doorway, and they’ll know something’s up.”

Shaking his head, James found the locker with his name on it. Notes from the other players plastered it, welcoming him to the team. This place was real chummy, he thought, and he'd have to get used to that.

Hi everyone! Personally, for me, my ideal locker room atmosphere would consist of a tight bond, almost like a brotherhood. When teams are very close, everyone wants to work harder for one another, it creates a great attitude and environment on and off the ice. When the bond is tight players seem to want to "go to war" with their teammates and they constantly push one another to be a better version of themselves. On the other hand, I have many different types of goals for my player. First off, the goal is to be a contributing player on my first team, I want to be able to compete against the best guy's night in and night out as I believe it will be the best for my development. Within my first two seasons, I hope to compete for a major league roster spot and hopefully start my legacy. Thank you!

While much is made in the media about what transpires on the ice from player stats to team success, the fact is that as good as a team may look on paper it's their cohesiveness in the locker room, or lack thereof, that goes a long way in how a team performs. Some players have played together before and have built-in chemistry. Sometimes you just click. Sometimes you don't. But it's that familiarity and camaraderie that separates the good teams and the GREAT teams. So, what happens when you throw a new guy in the mix?

You only get one chance to make a first impression. Cliché or not, it's the truth.

When you're meeting your whole team for the first time, it's definitely something that's on the back of your mind. This is true for Matviy Cajabi or any player joining a new team. Having played the entirety of his hockey in the Ukraine, Cajabi didn't have the luxury of knowing a single player on the Anchorage Armada. Although he was drafted alongside Chuck Chunky, Squilliam Fancyson, and Deth Klaw, he barely had a chance to talk to any of in Vegas.

So, armed with a batch of freshly made varenyky (pierogi) to give to his teammates, Cajabi summoned his courage and walked into the Armada dressing room for the first time.

There was a vast array of characters. And while Cajabi didn't know any of their names at the time, for editorial purposes, some of them will be introduced here. There was Danish sensation Ubba Lodbrok. The American lord and saviour, Jesus Murphy, and Seychellois goaltender, Stun Gun. There were a few faces he recognised from draft night, those whose hands he shook when he arrived on stage to pull the Armada jersey on for the first time. Among those was Retu, whom he smiled at since it was Retu who scouted him initially and Cajabi felt slightly beholden to.

He took in the scene and took a few more steps to try to gain the center of the room so that he may introduce himself to his teammates. And that's when it happened. He fell. Well, fell isn't entirely accurate. He tripped. Emphatically and dramatically. That kind of trip where you think you can regain your balance, but in doing so you make the trip way worse than it would have been. The pierogis, and Matviy, went flying. He lay in a heap, red-faced, with all eyes in the room now fixed on him. What was it that he had tripped on? A hockey stick?

He glanced over to where he had just been and saw a face that he knew. It was Deth Klaw. And then he looked down and saw it. Laying on the ground, and attached to his body, was Deth Klaw's unit.

"Well, looks like you met the third klaw," somebody quipped from the gathered players, which was met by an eruption of laughter. They helped Cajabi to his feet, who joined in with his howling teammates.

Pierogi and penises. That's one way to break the ice.

Walking into the Vancouver Whalers locker room and meeting all my new teammates for the first time was a wild night. I got the notification earlier in the day from my agent that Vancouver was working out a deal for my rights, and that they were chartering a jet to fly me out there to sign my junior contract. What I didn't expect was the full blown night club I walked into when I got there. The signing of my contract was celebrated with a bottle of Dom Perignon and some shots of Don Julio 1942. After that I got to meet some more faces within the organization, but those faces soon turned into a blur as a night in downtown Vancouver seemed more like a night in Las Vegas, party bus and all. Knowing how to party is the first step to assembling a winning culture in sports, and the while I don't remember much of the night after signing the contract, the team sure seems well on their way to doing just that.
