The Rebuild of the Nevada Battleborn

As we enter the S75 season of the SMJHL there are not a lot of high expectations for the Nevada Battleborn, but that was to be expected. Nevada is at the beginning of what most of sports call "The Rebuild", and as many fans will tell you its where you earn your stars and stripes as a fan. Most rebuilds usually take about 2 to 3 years and Nevada is some where between the year 1 and 2 mark but if it is done correctly, the team and fans reap the rewards. Though it means a tough season is ahead for Nevada, this is the recipe that can help turn a struggling team in to a regular contender.

As the Battleborn enter the S75 season and we dive through their roster, one of the glaring numbers you see is the amount of young talent on the team. Nevada is very deep when it comes to their youth movement. Currently on the roster they are carrying five players from last seasons draft, and a staggering nine from this seasons draft. Now just having prospects doesn't necessarily mean that you are built for success, you need those players to develop and meet their potential. There is no perfect recipe or road map that leads to that success, but a lot of people tell you their is one good way to approach it, and most would say take as many kicks at the can as possible.

That is where Nevada has placed their eggs, and hope to find their personal recipe for success. With Draft capital and having as many picks as possible is where Nevada started in the S74 draft and just continued to build upon. With the S74 draft Nevada so them make five selections, which headlined 1st round pick, winger, Literally Wizard and 2nd round pick, defenseman Caspian Leevi. This was just the start of their future core, which was followed up with the S75 draft, in which they made 6 more selections. Of those picks were 1st round selection Jim Wieners and 2nd round selection Cade de Vries. Then instead of just sitting on their loreals Nevada dove into the waiver wire and added 3 more players to their pipeline. These moves have put Nevada as one of the front runners for the future, along with the St. Louis Scarecrows, all though not guaranteed.

The media can try everything possible to mince words and try to paint Nevada in a good light this current season, but between management and the fans close to the scenes they see the up hill battle in front of them. Fans and especially management are keeping their eyes on the prize ahead of them, as they know that the struggles now will put them in a situation for success. The plan for the future for this team is not to just return to the playoffs, but to be a contender and hopefully bring the cup to Nevada and reward their loyal fan base for all the pain that they will have to withstand for now.
