Deep Dive #2: What is Happening in Quebec City. A dive into the first week numbers for the Citadelles.
By: MattyJ

Quebec City has had an exceptional start to the SMJHL season. Sitting at 1st in the standings with 15 wins, 4 losses, and one tie, QCC is on fire. They have also gathered 31 points and have a hefty lead on the competition. Now lets dive into the analytics.

With Goals For averaging 5.00 per game and Goals Against at 3.00 per game, it's clear this team knows how to find the back of the net while keeping their opponents at bay. Their offense is firing on all cylinders, outscoring their opponents by an extremely comfortable margin. They also have 3 players that have already tallied 30 points only a week into the season. That is over one point per game. Similar to this, there is not a single player with a negative plus minus.

Looking at Shots For and Shots Against per game, the team is dominating in shots, with an average of 43.10 shots for and only facing 33.85 shots against per game. This indicates they're controlling possession and putting constant pressure on their opponents, while also limiting the number of shots they allow defensively. This extreme difference further shows why they are dominating goals for and against. Although, shooting percentage wise, they are much higher than their opponents which shows the domination from their keepers.

Their Power Play Percentage is an impressive 32.2%, with 28 goals scored on 87 opportunities. This indicates they're extremely effective with the man advantage, capitalizing on power play situations and converting them into goals consistently. Their power play unit seems to be a force to be reckoned with.

On the Penalty Kill, they boast an outstanding 86.1% success rate, killing off 87 out of 101 penalties. This shows they're disciplined defensively and able to effectively defend against opposing power plays. Their penalty kill unit is doing an excellent job of shutting down the opposition's power play opportunities. The have scored twice as many goals on the power play than their opposition has scored on them. They give up more power plays than their opponent which may be something they look to address.

In terms of Faceoff Win Percentage, they're at 48.2%, which is decent but could be improved. Winning more faceoffs could give them better control of the game and more opportunities to generate offense. This is the one area of the game I am shocked they are not dominating. Perhaps their GM will ask their centers to put some more TPE into faceoff.

Overall, these stats paint a picture of a dominant team. They're scoring goals at a high rate, controlling possession with a barrage of shots, excelling on both the power play and penalty kill, and generally playing a strong all-around game. The Solberg siblings (I think) are currently leading this team to a domination of the SMJHL. If they can continue to perform at this level, they'll be a formidable force in any matchup and into the playoffs.

We will see how this team continues in the coming weeks. I expect this team to continue to play extremely well and make a strong playoff push. The only areas of concern are faceoffs, penalties, and a outlier shooting percentage. Be on the lookout for the shooting percentage to slow down and bring this team back to earth.
