Deep Dive #2: A Look at the Worst Seasons in the SHL's FHM Era

With the recent change to the draft lottery, it got me thinking about what some of the worst teams in the FHM era of the SHL were. So for this deep dive I have decided to compile what I believe to be the five worst seasons in the FHM era, which of course dates back to S53. As a disclaimer, I’m not trying to attack any of these teams for their poor seasons as I understand they were simply rebuilding. This is purely for my own interest.
5. S61 Winnipeg Aurora: 3-58-5, 0.083 point %, 100GF, 345GA, -245Diff The Aurora had been on a downward trend for the past few seasons up to this point, but S61 was when things really started to bottom out. They went on to win 3 games out of 66, and only managed to place 5th here due to their 5 OT losses. One amazing stat from this season is that their goaltender, Vincent Mietitore, still managed to put up a respectable save percentage of .908, despite a GAA of 4.77. Of course, I’m sure Winnipeg won’t be too beat up over a season like this given that it set them up for that legendary S62 draft that brought them their future successes. 4. S62 Winnipeg Aurora: 5-60-1, 0.083 point %, 95GF, 354GA, -259Diff We’re going right back to another Winnipeg team for number 4, in the season right after the number 5 team, no less. There could be an argument made for the S61 team being worse than this one given that they earned fewer wins. I decided to put the S62 team here, however, as they both had the same point percentage, but this team had a worse goal differential. This team also only managed two players that scored over 10 goals, while there were four in their previous season. 3. S74 Montreal Patriotes: 4-59-3, 0.083 point %, 125GF, 474GA, -349Diff Once again a team with the same point percentage, and once again I decided to use goal differential as a tiebreaker. While the team did manage to score a few more goals than the two Winnipeg teams, they also allowed over 100 more for a goal differential of -349. After some much better seasons in Montreal, the team tore it all down for a rebuild just the season prior in S73 where they finished 19th. S74 proved to be much worse for them as they finished in last place for the first time in their history. 2. S75 Montreal Patriotes: 1-64-1, 0.023 point %, 139GF, 544GA, -405Diff Montreal had another abysmal season in S75 managing to win only one game all season, a 2-1 victory against 19th place Seattle. Allowing only two goals in a game was a surprising feat for a team that allowed a total of 544 goals throughout the season, an average of just over 8 goals per game. I’m too lazy to check but I have to imagine that many goals against must be a record in the FHM era. Included in their many losses were two 15-2 losses to Baltimore and Tampa Bay, a 16-1 loss to Philadelphia, and an amazing 17-0 loss to New England. 1. S54 Tampa Bay Barracuda: 0-50-0, 0.000 point %, 45GF, 309GA, -264Diff Of course, a list like this cannot be complete without the infamous S54 Tampa Bay Barracuda. The only team in the FHM era to go winless, not even managing an OT loss, finishing with an impressive 0 points. Interestingly, the team finished with a better goal differential than the Montreal teams on this list, although of course that was done in fewer games. It can be argued that this team was better defensively than some of the other teams on this list, but they were certainly the worst offensive team. Scoring only 45 goals, the team managed only one player with over 10 goals, and only five with over 10 points. Just like the S61 Winnipeg team, the Barracuda’s starting goaltender also put up a .908 save percentage. It’s funny to think their season may have been worse if not for their goaltending. |
