Welcome to the roster announcement for team Finland!
Finland
~~~
We're still some days away from the IIHF tournament's start, but while the SHL/SMJHL playoffs are going on, the IIHF staff has worked behind the scenes to prepare for the upcoming event and so did we to build a fresh roster for our team. Finland has always been a team with a roster where not a lot has changed over the years and many players stayed with us for a long time. However this time we do have a few changes to announce. Let's take a look what's new in Winland.
As it is tradition by now we will start with retirements and other departures from last year's roster.
~~~
Let's start with Just-To-By My-Love who hasn't played with us for very long, only two tournaments to be exact, and already decided to retire again. Sorry we couldn't get you any medal this time. I'm relatively sure this wasn't the last time we've seen one of your incarnations here Wink. Happy retirement!
Similarly we have to say goodbye to William Tree who's had a relatively short stint with the team as well, but was part of the S73 bronze team. Who knows maybe we'll see you again too in the future.
A much bigger loss will be our long-time goalie GOAT Mat Smith who has done so much for the team in the past. Starting as a rookie as a backup to Harry Carpet, growing into a full starter role later for a long time and then returning into the backup role for the younger Carpet in the end; Mat has seen every aspect of goalie life within the team you can see. What a career this was. In one way or another Mat helped us win three gold medals, three bronze and a silver. A Winland legend for sure. Enjoy your retirement, too.
Last, but not least, also leaving us is our captain William Salming. Still going strong in the SHL, he makes space for younger players on the roster. Salming has been on Winland's roster for roughly the same time as Smith (they've even played on the WJC together before) and has also played a huge part in the success during the S60s and early S70s where the team won the seven medals mentioned above. Thanks for leading the team and being with us for such a long time. We know you'll be watching every tournament.
~~~
We also have two players playing in their last season with us this tournament that deserve some praise. Yannick Svoboda has been with us for many seasons and joined during the 'golden years' winning multiple medals with the team. Nibbles, the Winland Squirrel, hasn't been us for quite as long, but was part of the last bronze medal team in S73. Sad to see both of you go, but let's get another medal one last time!
~~~

Time to introduce our rookies, there are four of them this time, more than usual.
Let's start with Jani Mänty, a forward playing for Hamilton in the SHL who has been with us in a previous life - welcome back! Almost the same can be said for Ubba Lodbrok other that he's playing for Philadelphia instead - another long-time Winland member is returning to us. Welcome back as well! The other two are a bit newer here. Kristian Seppanen on defense and Tanner Pitts joining as a rookie backup goalie, both playing for Atlanta next season, complete the roster for us. We're excited to have all four of you on the team, let's go Winland!
~~~
Before we get to the part everyone is waiting for, a few more administrative announcements. For the first time in a long time we have more defenders than forwards on the team, so Yannick Svoboda was chosen to return to his old position as forward and Christian Kinsinger will also change positions for this tournament.
~~~

As mentioned above our old captain William Salming is no longer on the roster, so we asked the team internally to vote for a new captain. Last season both Mikko Rashford and Nash Topalo wore the A and the team picked Mikko Rashford as our new captain. Chosen to complete the leadership team with the second A this tournament was Shōyō Hinata. Congrats to everyone!

It has been a pleasure to be a captain of the Finnish national team. A dream come true. Thank you for that honour for the management and other players. I love a lion jersey more than anything else. I trust that the team will be in good hands from this point onwards. I have had some wonderful memories in Finnish federation and I won't never forget them.

Vamos Winland.
