Written Option 2:
Goalie IS the most important position. Starting goalie specifically, because they're the only thing keeping some guy off the street from polluting our net. As a defenceman, I pride myself in my ability to make my goalie's life easier, and helping them out on the mental side of things isn't just for sports therapists anymore. The method to handle each goalie differs depending on the goalie you're interacting with. I'm not equipped to deal with every single goalie, however, so I do the same stuff every time. I leave them be if a goal was on them during the moment. If I'm at fault, I'll hit them with a "my bad" and not dwell on it. For the most part, intermission and post game is when I have to handle them, and for the most part it is just by listening. I'll initiate it by mentioning something about a goal against by taking some blame. This will usually get them talking and complaining about something, usually their own mistake or inability to see the puck due to bodies in front or a deflection. Letting them vent and being able to say "it's all good, don't sweat it" just to let them get out their feelings and then let them know I don't care about the goal against. Listening is free and if you aren't good at it, you can just drown them out. |
