2x Draft Media - SHL Random Cube Draft Draft
#1

Hello and welcome everyone to the next installment of mock draft media you will be reading this offseason! My name is lemonoppy, both here and other places like the ISFL and PBE, and I am BROKE. 3WW Wingmate Roc is a forward, for now, for the Philly Forge and I feel guilty that I was such a NONFACTOR in the post season, and part of that is because I have NO MONEY. It is almost shameful how poor I am, just like in real life and just like how the Ottawa Senators make me feel when I watch them (although we bear Calgary last night lmao, Flames suck lmao).

Like the home town Senators and unlike the fictional Philly Forge, I am putting in a mediocre performance here full of bone headed mistakes, forgetting how to cover a rush, and immeasurable amounts of turnovers (aka incorrect draft predictions) by giving you a mock draft. I will potentially have a mock draft for both the majors and minors because I need that scran.

I would like to make sure everyone is aware of the mega disclaimer that I literally do not know anything about the SHL. I know that the Forge exist, so do the Quebec City Citadelles, I am apparently no longer on Russia, and that Zoot is goated but also that I think hotdog is not on my team. I also know that Flex aka Barqs aka a good dude is on my team as my only other facts. This means that this mock will be inaccurate, it will be farcical, and it is eligible for 2x draft media. From ISFL, I also grade media so if you give me a bonus I will do so for you (JUST KIDDING HAHA OF COURSE… UNLESS???)

I have watched 1 SHL draft live, it was the SMJHL one where I got drafted and then I watched the YouTube replay with the SHL one where I got drafted after I got DM'd a link to the Philly locker room, and so what I vaguely recall is that the draft here is WEIRD. This is also a PBE thing as well where the PBE draft is not actually a full draft, teams are skipping, getting fined picks, and that kind of stuff which is just not how it works in the ISFL. As a side note, I do love the live draft so I will be factoring that as well into my mock draft.

For my mock draft we will be assuming that there are no trades and that all teams will pick players at their draft spot. And now, how do we get draft spots? Well, I hadn't thought that far in advance. The plan is to beg in chat for a draft list and use that as my basis. I have had a few (homemade) meads alongside some nabe mille-feulle that my phone keeps auto correcting to mille-fuulle for some reason, so its going to be as sloppy as this huge ass intro already is. If I haven't already tried to bribe you, SHL graders, please note that I AM DOING SO NOW (IN MINECRAFT).

Okay, I’m back from my walk with the boi (Theo) and there was no reply about an SMJHL mock draft order, but there is one with the actual, real SHL one, so this is now a mock draft. This is a new mock draft technology called the triple blind mock draft, a person blind to SHL will mock a randomly selected player and describe them with a randomly selected card in my MTG cube, strap in!

Really, if you are not truly desperate for content, don’t read this, it’s not good lol.

Round 1

1. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - aishaansari - Left Wing Aisha Ansari - 155 TPE - Rank 79

The Hamilton Steelhawks, with the first pick of the SHL Season 80 draft, select Aisha Ansari, someone who I think is IA because they are literally last in TPE in the class, maybe the Steelhawks know something we all don’t! Using my patented MTG Cube randomizer technology, Aisha Ansari projects to be a Spellseeker like card, while someone like Jace, the Mind Sculptor is right beside them. Truly unlucky for the Steelhawks to go all in on a great value piece when there are so many more valuable cards aka players available. I think the Steelhawks GMs forgot to put in a pick and got random’d this one.

2. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - Wrehkz - Left Defense Pavel Mintyukov - 339 TPE - Rank 22

This is truly a pleasure, I know literally nothing about these except that they’re bad at picking based on my randomizer. Edmonton takes a player that might be going in the end of the first way at the front, and Pavel Mintyukov must have really popped in scouting. The good news is that the Blizzard took an Ozolith, the Shattered Spire, which means that they have a really strong pick here. A strong pack 1 pick 1, this is a player you can build around and is always good, even when you don’t specifically set strats for them, but get even better when you do!

3. Patriotes Montréal Patriotes - ocho - Left Wing Greyson Willis - 282 TPE - Rank 38

Three picks in and we don’t have a player in the top 20 in TPE picked yet, which isn’t super unusual from a pure odds perspective, but is fun! Greyson Willis is a Dragon’s Rage Channeler, great card, great player, super efficient and will be a threat in the end of the game and at the start. Will be a great player to enable everyone around them, and will be able to pressure the opponents into panicking and playing inefficient answers to this speedy winger.

4. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via syndicate Chicago Syndicate) - schotte74 - Left Defense Uwe Bindewald - 355 TPE - Rank 9

Woah, the Steelhawks again! I wonder if this is going to be a team we see a lot in this draft, big tank job maybe? Well, to make up for the weird 1.01 pick, the Hammer takes Village Rites, aka Uwe Bindewald! This is a very reasonable pick, we’ve got a player who is right at the top of the TPE charts and this is a pick that will be a good role player, but that’s not what we want from the 4th overall pick. The Steelhawks are taking players that are good, but it’s cube and SHL draft, everyone is good, the question is if they’re not taking valuable buildarounds and instead just taking glue-y good cards (players).

5. Rage Manhattan Rage - Marshi - Right Wing Shiny Rainbow - 360 TPE - Rank 3

The Rage swoop in and take the third highest TPE player in the class in Shiny Rainbow. They’ve got a big target found and will be happy to nab them. Unfortunately, in Magic terms they took a Woodfall Primus, WHICH ISN’T BAD but is definitely not good. Overreaching for a payoff that they did not need so early. I project Marshi to be a good reanimation target but maybe not something you take aggressively.

6. Aurora Winnipeg Aurora - mehmad - Left Wing mehmad durrani - 173 TPE - Rank 70

Oh no, another player without a juniors team. The Aurora must have also not shown up to the draft as well, but good news for them, they’ve taken an Overlord of the Floodpits, but bad news, that card is pretty good but isn’t like… great. Sometimes it doesn’t make the cut, and I’m afraid that’ll be the case here.

7. Argonauts Seattle Argonauts - JamesT - Center Kim Chaewon - 364 TPE - Rank 1

Oh my god, Chaewon is in this draft class? She plays SHL? Spotify literally played Crazy right now. 10/10 pick depending on era but unfortunately, Chaewon projects to be a Temple Garden. Guys, if we’re playing cube, we are not taking friggin Temple Garden this early. Chaewon is a bust who is too busy putting out bangers and doesn’t achieve much in SHL. Maybe I am just a Selesyna hater idk.

8. Specters New Orleans Specters - phinigin.twitch - Right Defense Kermit Zhaba - 166 TPE - Rank 72

At 8 we have a Twitch streamer, let’s go, some more viewership, too bad that watching SHL streams literally makes me want to die. Kermit Zhaba is a Bone Shards, which is AGAIN just a great glue role player but isn’t what you want to take so early, but I guess that’s just what happens when you’re too busy watching Twitch.

9. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (via Platoon Baltimore Platoon) - Rojjter - Center Leo Carlsson - 349 TPE - Rank 15

The Syndicate come in with a great pic in Leo Carlsson, a player that is around where they’d get drafted in TPE order. Unfortunately for them, and for me maybe, Carlsson is a Traverse the Ulvenwald. This is a pretty okay card, it looks kinda okay and is kinda fun but often just is underwhelming. Should I just cut it from the cube? Hopefully Rojjter doesn’t have that same conversation in the SHL.

10. Stars Toronto North Stars - TheGreatToeJam - Left Defense Chungledown Bim - 356 TPE - Rank 8

Chungledown Bim is a pretty great name, and a pretty great pick by the North Stars. At P1 P10 they snag a Go for the Throat, a solid, versatile removal spell which you will end up needing. Chungledown is going to be clutch, going to be versatile, and will make sure to shut down the opposing offense, and break through the stalls when you need something going.

11. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - roddy2hotty - Right Wing Ivan Volchenkov - 165 TPE - Rank 73

Oh my, another Rank 70s player, this isn’t great news for the Wolfpack, and the card drafted also backs that up. At the powerlevel of my cube, Gravedig just isn’t strong enough or efficient enough to see much play and is on the verge of getting cut. I suspect Volchenkov won’t make the starting 40 (or whatever the SHL roster count is).

12. Rage Manhattan Rage (via Panthers Los Angeles Panthers) - DylTheThrill - Left Wing Geno Vajihollahi - 339 TPE - Rank 23

DylTheThrill goes to the Rage, as Manhatten pairs a Noble Hierarch with their previously taken Woodfall Primus, which goes to show that the Rage have a plan, they have something they want to do, and I’m willing to let them cook.

13. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (via Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs) - Aurora - Right Wing Aurora Borealis - 285 TPE - Rank 35

The Blizzard take a Hornet Queen in Aurora Borealis at 13, which is a pet card that I love but is kind of unfun and not even good enough maybe? Borealis, based on Hornet Queen, is going to be a player who is absolutely lights out when they’re on, but they might just be too slow or finicky to be a star in all match ups and all games.

14. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (via Stampede Buffalo Stampede) - DarthDaevin - Left Defense Tiny Princess - 356 TPE - Rank 6

Man, there are a lot of players being taken by the same few teams, the SHL feels like it has more teams tanking at one time than other leagues, which is kind of interesting. DarthDaevin is a steal here for the Syndicate (oh fuck me, that’s a pun I didn’t mean). And more importantly, they’re a Carnage Interpreter, a card from the Magic x Clue board game (yeah lol) crossover. Carnage Interpreter is a banger card that enables everything, is cool as all heck, and will just kill the opponent out of nowhere. Absolute robbery by the Syndicate (again, did not mean the pun) and is a 10/10 pick here.

15. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda) - Stofz - Left Defense Kris Sabev - 165 TPE - Rank 74

The Steelhawks are left with the last pick in the pack and take Thundering Falls (full art) which is a great push card in a draft, but we’re at pick 15 in the SHL draft, not the magic one. The Steelhawks have had a disastrous start so far based off of what random.org has assigned them, they have selected Spellseeker and Village Rites previously (technically a synergy) but it’s just a puzzling draft so far.

16. Stampede Buffalo Stamped (via Dragons Calgary Dragons) - Raf_TML - Goalie Trent Mackenzie - 353 TPE - Rank 12

To give you a peek behind the hood, some inside baseball, I just rolled up a Cube Cobra playtest draft and am taking the first card in each pack, which makes the power of each card and therefore the player taken’s projection, super weird. Anyway, the Stampede are taking the classic in TARMOGOYF. This card is amazing, nostalgic, and I love it, therefore, I love Raf_TML and Trent Mackenzie will be a perennial all-star that everyone loves but will taper off into good memories you keep on the bench but has eventually had the game pass him by, but that’s after a decade plus of dominance.

17. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via Inferno Atlanta Inferno) - GrïmR3æpêr - Center GrïmR3æpêr - 248 TPE - Rank 49

The Platoon come in here with an aggressive pick of Grim Reaper but spelt with real letters, and the corresponding pick is Kumano Faces Kakazan, a familiar face that’s got a lot of power. It’s a card that wants to go and kill the opponent fast, but that aggro might be a bit.. much?

18. Rage Manhattan Rage (via Renegades Texas Renegades) - a_canuck - Right Defense Jack Ellul - 354 TPE - Rank 11

The Rage see a_canuck and decide that Jack Ellul is worth doing a hard pivot for, and what are we pivoting for? It’s Lurrus of the Dream Den of course! One of the most powerful cards of all time, Ellul is a surprise to see so late, and is someone you play your whole franchise (deck) around. Move over Woodfall Primus (Shiny Rainbow), the real star is in town, and they’re going right with Geno Vajihollahi (Noble Hierach)

19. Forge Philadelphia Forge - jackkmart - Right Defense Aloysius Hoglord III - 266 TPE - Rank 43

I truly thought we had traded away our first, it just seemed like it’d have happened because of all these teams repeating in the first round, guess not! Hoglord the third is a Carrion Feeder, a super strong, super scary aggro combo card that can both kill you, blank removal, and combo you. A triple threat that the Rage would have loved to pair with their previous pick!

20. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via pride San Francisco Pride) - looees_77 - Left Defense Jaquavion Tavius - 218 TPE - Rank 61

In continuing the questionable picks, we’ve got the Steelhawks taking another low ranked player, and a pretty low ranked card in Nahiri, the Harbinger. The Steelhawks are flitting around with different ideas, but haven’t bought a main plan yet, I fear they may have to spend a few more seasons tanking based on how bad they are at rolling random dice.

Round 2

21. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - KenitohMenara - Center Drew McIntyre - 353 TPE - Rank 13

The Steelhawks back up their weird pick with a great one in the SHL with KenitohMenara, but a questionable one in the Magic portion of the draft with Grim Lavamancer. Another strong card, one that pressures the opponent and technically has synergy with their deck but is… just too many dreams happening at the same time.

22. Argonauts Seattle Argonauts (via Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard) - Andy - Goalie Meowlnir Kittenson - 340 TPE - Rank 21

The goalie Meowlnir Kittenson is represented as Wrath of God in the Magic portion of our triple blind draft. We’ve got a player who projects to be a solid wall between the pipes. You think you have a good shot? Well, we’ve got the lord almighty himself saying no. I expect the Argonauts to call the shutouts they get in the playoffs Wrath of God for a long time to come. A classic and a long standing pro.

23. Patriotes Montréal Patriotes - JBeckQuest - Right Wing Quazon Brosonchi - 300 TPE - Rank 32

The Patriotes select The Underworld Cookbook in Quazon Bronsonchi! A lovely card that enables a ton of strategies and goes with their previous pick of Greyson Willis (Dragon’s Rage Channeler). I expect to see a lot of steady grinding and great positional play combined with explosive blowouts with a 1-2 pass to Willis in the future.

24. Specters New Orleans Specters (via syndicate Chicago Syndicate) - EthanSea611 - Center Ethan Ashcroft - 196 TPE - Rank 68

The Specters are taking an IA player (I assume) in Ethan Ashcroft, and a very medium card in Dreams of Steel and Oil in the draft. The Specters seem afraid to commit to a power card and are just taking people who will be okay at best. Of course, I’m projecting solely on Magic powerlevel, not the SHL which I know nothing about.

25. Rage Manhattan Rage - quanin - Right Wing James Mawk - 197 TPE - Rank 67

Alright, the Rage don’t take a great SHL player here from a TPE perspective, we can do a lot better, but from a Magic perspective, they take Oona’s Prowler which is a super cool and pretty good card, and also, AMAZING with Lurrus, AKA a_canuck. They know what they’re doing in Manhattan, and that is making sure they’re going to feed Jack Ellul.

26. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (via Aurora Winnipeg Aurora) - Peyton - Left Wing Peyton McLazy - 238 TPE - Rank 51

Oh no, I had too much faith, who let the Syndicate cook. I think the Syndicate have gotten enamoured by an objectively badass card in Bloodbraid Challenger aka Peyton McLazy and haven’t done enough thinking of their team composition. Luckily for them, Peyon is good and cool enough that this is a great pick that will pop off ALL THE TIME and be super exciting to watch.

27. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Argonauts Seattle Argonauts) - JejuDaejiGogi - Right Defense Damante Gogi - 288 TPE - Rank 34

I have a slight question about this user’s name, why is it DaejiGogi and not like HeukDaejiGogi, what’s going on here???? Anyway, the Stampede are getting it, they’re taking great players, great role players, and amazing locker room vibes, I’m talking of course of Knight of Autumn going alongside Tarmogoyf. Love to see it, love the pick, love the strategy.

28. Argonauts Seattle Argonauts (via Specters New Orleans Specters) - jiels - Left Wing jiels - 232 TPE - Rank 55

I don’t know what TPE is actually good for this spot in the draft but I feel like we’re a little too low here, and that bears out in the Argonauts taking Student of Warfare in the Magic draft. Temple Garden, Wrath of God, Student of Warfare is like… fine? I guess it’s okay but we’re kind of just taking players here, let jiels be your guy, unleash him and he’ll solo games for you. I expect locker room beef between jiels and goalie Meowlnir Kittenson coming a mile away.

29. Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Dirty Puma - Right Defense Dirty Puma - 330 TPE - Rank 25

We’ve got the Platoon feeling kinda STOMPY as they take the Dirty Puma at 29. We’ve got a great player, great TPE, a great fit with the Kumano taken earlier, and Dirty Puma is going to be coming out of nowhere, as they are the card Ram Through. Dirty Puma is going to be levelling anyone with their heads down and just firing missiles at the goal.

30. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Stars Toronto North Stars) - leymed - Left Wing Heaver McLovin - 164 TPE - Rank 75

The Stampede get a little antsy and want to join in on the Bloodbraid party as they take Heaver McLovin, not great reach, and make their draft a bit weaker in order to take Bloodbraid Elf, but little did the SHL know, Heaver McLovin is actually stashing all their TPE in a hidden bank and is going to absolutely run over teams and create unbeatable cascades (ugh, ‘nother pun).

31. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Wolfpack New England Wolfpack) - Ferwx - Right Defense Jean Bon - 309 TPE - Rank 30

Woah, we’ve got a player taken so close to their actual TPE ranking! That’s kinda cool! The Stampede are taking Jean Bon, a great player aka Xander’s Lounge aka a triome, but it seems like a luxury pick they kind of panicked about, not super great. Luckily, Jean Bon is so versatile and powerful that they’ll help the Stampede mix it around and play a team with whatever pieces they have.

32. Aurora Winnipeg Aurora (via Panthers Los Angeles Panthers) - This Guy - Right Wing Mick Geno - 265 TPE - Rank 44

This Guy, Mick Geno, is the Aurora pick at 32 (someone kill me for writing that horrible sentence, I apologize). Mick Geno is a Voldaren Epicure, someone who can fit all the roles you need, a real glue guy who’ll make sure that all the plays you run have someone taking point and enabling the play. Not a huge goal scorer but will be the guy every analytics person wants on the team.

33. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (via Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs) - Kar3n - Right Defense Cheese N'Wine - 322 TPE - Rank 27

I apologize to the Wolfpack, I didn’t realize that they were CHEFS. They cook here, taking Cheese N’Wine (oh shoot, is that another pun? I swear that one was an accident) and Archfiend of Ifnir in the Magic side of the draft. Going well with their Grave Dig, we’ve got something assembling an engine, a great machine being built, I hope we can see some more around it.

34. Argonauts Seattle Argonauts (via Stampede Buffalo Stampede) - ivanoff - Right Defense Ivanoff - 234 TPE - Rank 53

Alright Argonauts, PICK A LANE. We’ve got Chord of Calling aka Ivanoff being taken here, but this just doesn’t fit with what they’re doing, looks like we’ve got a great set of players but the GM and head coach of the Argos not on the same page. Hopefully they can make it work, but it’s not looking great over in Seattle.

35. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda) - MightyMulder - Right Defense Zach Mulder - 255 TPE - Rank 45

The Steelhawks take who is sure to be the most powerful player left, Zach Mulder aka Phalge, Tita of Fire’s Fury. We’ve got a player here who might not look as good as they are at first glance, still good mind you, but is going to absolutely turn the league on its head as soon as they get on the ice for the first time. Pro comp? Quinn Hughes.

36. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (via Dragons Calgary Dragons) - Martycharlie - Center Marty Charlie - 216 TPE - Rank 62

Guys, the Syndicate are not listening to me, they aren’t taking who I want them to take! Marty is looking kind of TPE sparse, but the Syndicate believe in him and Steel Seraph and that they can cobble something together. Maybe they don’t know the Bloodbraid Challenger cascade and Protoype rules, that must be it.

37. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (via Inferno Atlanta Inferno) - Seagull_6 - Left Defense Jimmy Twoshoes - 246 TPE - Rank 50

The Syndicate follow up a questionable pick with a great one in Jimmy TwoShoes and a Raucous Theatre. If you want to try something cool and fun, you gotta make sure you’ve got a responsible mana base aka defense and Jimmy Twoshoes is going to keep opponents honest. Love this pick here.

38. Specters New Orleans Specters (via Renegades Texas Renegades) - Tylala - Left Defense Tylah Fortune - 211 TPE - Rank 64

The Specters are turning it around with their pick of Tylah Fortune aka Karmic Guide. They’ve figured out something powerful and see the possibilities a versatile and baseline great defenseman and card can have. We’ve finally found our destination and I’m in for the ride.

39. Inferno Atlanta Inferno (via Forge Philadelphia Forge) - LambFish66 - Right Defense Trey Lambert-Gill - 278 TPE - Rank 41

Oh no, the Forge don’t have a second! What the heck, give it back! Anyway, the Inferno take one of the most fun and dynamic players in the draft in Trey Lambert-Gill aka Ephemerate. Trey plays defence well, but as we all know with Ephemerate, it can enable some great trick plays, facilitate the interesting tricks that the coach has, and is just the best vibes.

40. Aurora Winnipeg Aurora (via pride San Francisco Pride) - Elad315 - Right Defense Colton Paraygeko - 355 TPE - Rank 10

Okay, let’s go Aurora. At the bottom of the second, they find the 10th ranked player! And to boot, it’s an Enduring Curiosity which goes super well with their previous picks. Someone give these Winnipeg GMs a raise. Colton Praygeko is going to surprise with his speed, and that’s going to lead to more assists than you might ever expect.

Round 3

41. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Thirmulligan - Right Defense Hal MacGuiness - 238 TPE - Rank 52

The Steelhawks continue a puzzling draft and take a solid player but not a huge difference maker in Batterskull aka the 52nd ranked Hal MacGuiness. MacGuiness will be a great defensive option, and even make his way into the red zone but might not have the quickness to keep up in the modern SHL game.

42. pride San Francisco Pride (via Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard) - Bru4thelou - Left Wing Dirk Dienhart - 285 TPE - Rank 36

Fortunately, from an SHL and Magic perspective we’ve got a great value pick! Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis, which kind of goes great as a first pick for a team in San Francisco will end up being Dirk Dienhart who breaks the SHL league and requires build rule changes because they are so fast and strong that the opposing teams can’t stop him, even if they put three on him at all times. We’ve got a difference maker here folks.

43. Patriotes Montréal Patriotes - MaxK_41 - Center Max Roberts - 161 TPE - Rank 76

Unfortuantely from an SHL TPE perspective, we can do more. But from a Magic perspective, we’ve got Mental Note which is a fantastic pick and will enable a lot of fun, explosive starts. I don’t know if I can say that this IA player comes back and works as a primary line pivot to create explosive plays, but we can hope.

44. syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Triscuttt3 - Goalie DarthDaevin - 249 TPE - Rank 48

The Syndicate with their million picks have somehow not doubled up at goalie here and we’ve got another Star Wars guy that comes in at solid TPE with loads of room to grow, great selection here by Chicago. A little questionable from a Magic POV with taking Goblin Guide, maybe their goalie pipeline is a bit full and so we’ve got a player that doesn’t quite fit the Chicago timeline without trades happening.

45. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Rage Manhattan Rage) - Dilly X 11 - Goalie Lucas Dill - 221 TPE - Rank 59

Is this a mini goalie run??? Probably not, only two in a row! The Stampede are taking a second-choice goalie maybe, with missing out on DarthDaevin and also ending up with Sower of Temptatation, enabled by the Xander’s Lounge from before but a bit ambitious on coloured pips!

With these 45 picks our Magic draft is over and so is our mock draft. Sorry it got so long and rambly and word repeaty but sometimes you just need some SHL money. As a bonus, I’ll have the rest of the draft as done by random at the bottom, but let’s look at our Magic draft pool and see if we have a deck we can build!

I think our pool is basically a trash fire, we’ve got loads of good cards, not enough cards that put it all together and our mana is horrible. We can’t really play our good white cards like Phlage so that has to go, and so we’re left with some kind of Jund (red green black) mid-range pile that might try to win on just killing the opponent or casting a big guy (in a fair way lmao), but I’m not optimistic!
