![]() On my current media high of trying to give the people what they want, I perused back into my media library to get inspiration from past projects. What I found was my most viewed set of articles - by far. I wrote a two part analysis on Player Ratings and Forum Hours for the SHL and SMJHL. I wrote these articles one month after I joined the site as a green newbie back in Season 59. Each of those articles got upwards of 2,200 views each, so I thought it would be interesting to approach the subject again mirroring the work of the first pieces, but also exploring the data as a time series. A lot has changed in 21 seasons in the SHL. The original pieces on the SHL and SMJHL data can be found in these links, but I will also review what the findings were then and extrapolate. Chapter 0: About the Data This data was mined by yours truly. I visited all of your profiles to gather this data. JamesT level of sleuthing. I did this both in Season 59 and just now, in Season 80. Things to know about the data: - If there was some error I made in 2021, that data is now gone. Oops. I don't see any of those instances, but nevertheless. - Hours on site were collected 1/18/25. Ratings were collected 1/19/25. It's inevitable that these numbers changed somewhat in the few days between. - Users have the option to hide their time spent on the forums. These users have a zero in the column. It subverts the truth somewhat, but some of you wanted to be private so, so be it. - A number of users have changed their usernames in the time between 2021 and today. If I knew about the change, I tried to change it to capture the data. If I didn't know about it or forgot, your user data is probably not present when comparing the past and now. - This data ONLY INCLUDES USERS WITH ACTIVE PLAYERS ROSTERED TO A TEAM. If your player is a free agent or you don't have a player, tough cookies. This goes for Season 59 and Season 80 data. - Some users have gone inactive. There are new users. Both these groups are not included in time period comparisons. - This time around I also collected when you all joined the site to normalize data over time for one of the later chapters. - For users with players in both leagues, you are counted twice when SHL and SMJHL data is split, but only counted once when looking sitewide. Chapter 1: The Season 59 Data and Findings When I did this analysis in Season 59, there were only 18 SHL teams and 14 SMJHL teams (now 20 SHL and 18 SMJHL). Those teams were comprised of 567 players (users) total. In Season 59, total site hours among active users were 213,446 while total site ratings were 14,664. When breaking it down by team, we see that Manhattan's users had the most combined site experience of all the SHL teams and Detroit has the most combined user experience of the SMJHL teams. Manhattan significantly led the field, almost singlehandedly thanks to luke. Luke basically triples anyone else in site time, as we will see later. ![]() As expected, many of the SHL teams housed more seasoned users, therefore their sum of site hours were higher than SMJHL teams. The only exceptions to this rule were the rock bottom teams of the SHL and the better teams of the SMJHL swapping positions on the hierarchy. As mentioned earlier, 6 teams did not exist, so were not a part of the initial report. The only team that has since rebranded is the Yukon Malamutes, who were the Anaheim Outlaws in Season 59. Team ratings, or the most "beloved" teams shook out like this: ![]() Calgary was the most loved team in the SHL while Kelowna was the most loved team in the SMJHL. No one liked the players playing for Baltimore and No one liked the players in St Louis (cry, me). Overall, though the teams fighting for the top spots are again floated by a few users that have most of the site ratings. When we previously looked at active rostered users in Season 59, the top 10 users looked like this: 1. luke - 8,760 hours 2. WannabeFinn - 3,528 hours 3. Leppish - 3,360 hours 4. ml002 - 2,952 hours 5. JR95 - 2,352 hours T-6. Kalakar - 2,160 hours T-6. Tomen - 2,160 hours 8. Sve7en - 2,136 hours 9. Briedaqueduc - 2,112 hours T-10. RedCapeDiver - 2,088 hours T-10. Rich - 2,088 hours For reference, 2,000 hours is ~83 days. Of all active users, below is the distribution of total site hours. I did not include luke because he throws the whole chart off balance. In Season 59, only 63 users had a total site time balance of hours over 1,000. The rest of the 466 (not including people with hidden hours) were under 1,000 hours. You can easily see that site experience is an oligarchy of thoroughbred users. ![]() ![]() That oligarchy of users is not limited to those people that joined the site pre-2015. For example, sve7en only joined the site in January 2020 and this initial poll was taken in April of 2021. Talk about a huge growth in site hours in year 1. Time does help users accumulate site hours, but it really just depends on the user and how much free time they have. Ratings did not directly correlate with site time, neither in Season 59 or in Season 80. In Season 59, the top 10 users in forum rating were: 1. Mike Izzy - 324 2. SlashACM - 239 3. PremierBromanov - 230 4. luke - 209 T-5. hotdog - 205 T-5. slothfacekilla - 205 7. trella - 195 8. WannabeFinn - 194 9. .bojo - 159 T-10. caltroit_red_flames - 146 T-10. Slappydoodle - 146 Only luke and WannabeFinn repeat from the site hours list to this list. In Season 59, only 29 users had a site rating of 100 or more. One user, Frostbite, had a -29 rating during the time of the Season 59 analysis. The chart below show the relationship between rating ang hours. Users like Mike Izzy who hid their site hours will not show up on their graph because their site time is effectively zero. ![]() Chapter 2: The Season 80 Data and Findings We'll start with the good stuff. The top ten rostered users by rating and site time are: Site Rating 1. sköldpaddor - 420 rating (nice) 2. luke - 368 rating 3. trella - 355 rating 4. hotdog - 292 rating 5. WannabeFinn - 284 rating 6. slothfacekilla - 259 rating 7. Sve7en - 251 rating 8. micool132 - 214 rating 9. caltroit_red_flames - 207 rating 10. hhh81 - 202 rating Site Hours 1. luke - 16,001 2. sköldpaddor - 5,830 3. WannabeFinn - 5,806 4. Sve7en - 5,446 5. Rich - 4,908 6. puolivalmiste - 3,328 7. JR95 - 3,256 8. Muerto - 3,208 9. Ace - 3,064 10. hhh81 - 2,968 We see a few repeats from Season 59, but otherwise it's a lot of new users to the top lists. Luke holds his #1 position in hours by.... a lot. Skoldpaddor (Jess) took the mantle of "best loved on the site" and is #2 in site hours. WannabeFinn, Sve7en, and hhh81 make both lists as well. ![]() By team, Los Angeles took control of "the most loved team" while Buffalo sunk down to the least liked. New to the crew San Diego is the most liked SMJHL franchise while Vancouver is the least liked. It's pretty close near the top for the SHL and one well-liked player moving here or there would topple the standings. ![]() By experience, LAP is also the most experienced team with a combined 22,131 site hours. This blows other teams out of the water. Edmonton is the least experienced team in site time in the SHL. For the SMJHL, Great Falls is luke in disguise, but nevertheless the most experienced (they would be 8th without luke). Vancouver is the least experienced. ![]() Chapter 3: Time Series Comparison I will start off this section by saying that 26 users that logged 1,000+ hours of site time in Season 59 (of 63 total) did not have a rostered player in Season 80. So please understand that this is not "all users site time ever," but site time and ratings between rostered players. Similarly, 9 of those well loved users over 100 site rating (29 total) are not rostered in Season 80. Leaguewide, the average user rating increased from 25.9 in Season 59 to 32.4 in Season 80. Average user hours increased from 403.5 per user in Season 59 to 478.8 per user in Season 80. Remember, this includes an increase of six whole teams worth of players. In sum numbers, see the below table: ![]() Looking at users who changed the most: Ratings Change from Season 59 to Season 80 1. sköldpaddor - +288 rating 2. trella - +160 3. luke - +159 4. Sve7en - +151 5. micool132 - +144 6. Ragnar - +131 7. boom - +120 8. Evok - +114 9. Ruggsy - +95 10. goldenglutes - +92 Hours Change from Season 59 to Season 80 1. luke - +7,241 hours 2. sköldpaddor - +4,390 3. Sve7en - +3,310 4. Rich - +2,820 5. Carpy48 - +2,814 6. WannabeFinn - +2,278 7. boom - +1,566 8. leviadan - +1,508 9. Wally - +1,484 10. puolivalmiste - +1,480 Jess really brought the heat in the past 21 seasons. All of these users are great and worthy of the recognition. I also wanted to give a quick look at when users joined the site vs their rating and hours. Here is when users currently on active rosters joined the league. ![]() Here is the users with the most amount of their time spent on the site. To explain, since luke joined the SHL, 2,391 days have passed. If you take the amount of hours in that time period and divide by the amount of hours luke has, it shows that 27.88% of all time luke has been logged into the site. ![]() Looking at ratings per day on the site: ![]() And in case you were interested, the most experienced actively rostered users: ![]() And that's all I have. I definitely could have spent more time writing a narrative and explaining all this, but I've put like 10 hours into it already and I'm hungry and I don't want to write this article anymore lol. Just look at the attached sheet and I trust you all can extrapolate findings by yourself. There's so much here. Spreadsheet link. Look at the Teams and Users sheets. I'm curious about the number of hours on the website. How can the data differentiate between active and passive time on site?
