I always feel like I should say something when this day rolls around, but I’ve done all my thank-you posts recently with the holidays and the PTs and all that, so I’m going to keep this general instead of specific.

Six years ago today I joined the SHL! It took me a while to get as heavily involved as I am now, but it’s crazy how much time flies. In some ways, it really doesn’t feel like it’s been that long, but in others, it feels like it must be more than six years that this community has been a part of my life.

Six years of the SHL also means it’s been three years, as of a few days ago, that I was hired to head office - which means that I now pass the point at which I will have spent more time in the league in leadership than I did outside of that realm of responsibility.

This past year, I stepped away from some responsibilities (namely jobs I actually thought other people would be interested in doing, like rookie mentoring) and took on others (I am now on both awards committees, and I actually enjoy it a lot more than I ever imagined I would). I have made new friends, I have lost some who were not worthy of the loyalty I gave them; I have, as usual, laughed and cried and thrown up my hands in both frustration and excitement over things that have happened here.

I have wrapped up yet another career, and embarked on my third one, and I am really, genuinely excited to tell another silly little fake hockey story here with my friends. I don’t know where I’m going to end up in the draft coming up, but I’m excited to see what happens, excited to start a new chapter in whatever locker room I end up in.

I want to say thank you to everybody who has my back, especially the people who don’t always agree with me but turn that into productive dialogue and discuss things like grownups, who genuinely have the best interests of our little community here at heart. When you have spent a decade working in a space that doesn’t take you seriously, surrounded by people who constantly make you feel like you have to prove yourself, that kind of interpersonal respect and kindness mean the absolute world. And to the others - the ones who instead choose to make up lies about me and spread untrue stories in dark corners of war rooms and whatnot - I hope you know that you will never, ever steal my joy for this place, you will never kill my desire to keep making things better, and if that’s what you choose to devote your time and energy to, I can’t stop you, but I promise you, there are so much more fulfilling things to do with your life.

I hope everyone has the most amazing year, and I hope you all find something to pour your heart into that means as much to you as this place has come to mean to me. <3

Congrats on 6 years that is an amazing accomplishment.
