5. Who are the most unexpected players taking part in the event? Why?

For Team Pacific, I was surprised to see 2 defensemen named to the team, namely Jaden Tanner from the Calgary Dragons, and Simo Jaaskelainen from the Seattle Argos. All-Star nods are usually given to players who have a more offensive flair to them. These 2 are the opposite, as a couple of the best defensive players in the league. Tanner was the number one shot blocker in the league, and Simo was number 2. To see players who contribute to that side of the game being recognized shows that the All-Star committee isn't just always blinded by flashy point scoring. These types of players should definitely be given the chance to get to play in the game, maybe it will make the games more competitive as they try to shut down the opposing stud players, instead of just being a pond hockey no-defense type of game. Good for them and maybe they can surprise by chipping in a few points of their own!

Make a case for a player or user of your choice to win an award or multiple awards. Is it a clear case or do you think it would be a pretty close vote for the awards committee. Or is your case more out of left field and you hope that the awards team will see this in time to read the stats as they should be?

I'm going to make a case for the Ryan Jesster Trophy for Rookie of the Year being given to Seattle defenseman Roquefort Cotswald. Defensemen don't often get a lot of points, especially as rookies, so they are easily overlooked when it comes to doling out awards. Especially when recently you've had rookies like Shadow Fenix or Alexa Johanssen putting up massive point totals in their rookie seasons. Roquefort was able to be a very good player, leading all rookie defense in goals, assists and points, 2nd in hits, and decent metrics defensively. He was one of only 3 rookies to have a positive +/- differential. And this was all playing as a 3rd pairing defender without top line minutes or prime powerplay opportunities. It's not a stretch to argue that a rookie player coming in and helping shore up the defense on a team which had previously struggled to keep pucks out of their net is a massive accomplishment. And no shade against any other rookies but there wasn't any forwards who had a particularly explosive season to really place themselves ahead in the conversation, especially when you consider that several of the higher scoring rookie forwards were given more ice time and played higher in the depth chart. So I hope the awards committee will consider that Roquefort was indeed the best rookie out there in S80.

1) Milestone here.

10) Assuming we're talking about divisional teams here, I think you gotta hand the tournament to the Atlantic. I mean the worst team in the Atlantic would've been a playoff team in two other divisions. They were all over .500! It would be pretty tough not to put a banger team together from guys on Atlanta and Tampa Bay, two of the top three teams in the league, but then you get a few more stars sprinkled in from the Forge, from Manhattan, from Baltimore. All these teams have some fire power and I think it'd be tough for anyone to challenge them. It's hard to completely write off the Pacific, what with them having the reigning cup champs and Seattle as well, a team that really surprised the league this year, but in a tournament format I just don't think that, as of season 80 at least, the Pacific can go toe to toe with the Atlantic. In two or three seasons maybe it's a different story, but right now I think it'd be the Atlantic's tournament to lose. (179)

11) Greetings my dearest sister. An unfortunately early playoff exit this year has afforded me the time to return home a few weeks earlier than expected. I know that last off season I wasn't able to make it back, but this year I have set aside a full month to be home before I'm off to the IIHF tournament! Yes, that's right, we'll get four whole weeks of hiking, talkling, drinking, and swimming before I have to leave again. Do let me know if there's anything you wish for me to pick you up from America-- I know you have a penchant for some of their terrible snacks and foods. I'll set aside a suitcase specifically for novelty potato chip flavours and other such things. Truth be told now that I have some time to myself I may even help you eat some of them. My training regiment can wait a week or two, can't it? What's the harm in 4-6 bags of Doritos? Anyways I'm really looking forward to our time together and seeing the rest of the family again. I've been gone far too long and I promise not to let it happen again! Now that I have my footing in the SHL I think I can carve out the time for those that matter most to me. Cheers, Pinli. (221)

2. Do you like the new format? Why or why not?
I'm gonna be honest, I genuinely do not care about all-star games at all in real life. Here, I only really care if my player's playing, and even then it's mostly just an "oh nice, let's add that to the awards and honors section." If the All-Star Committee thought this a good chance of pace, I won't begrudge them, I'm just not in the demographic here. (68 words)

5. Who are the most unexpected players taking part in the event? Why?
Is there any answer besides the retired legends? I think that's probably the thing that intrigues me most. The idea of past greats playing alongside today's stars is something you can't really do in real life. But within the SHL's realm, it's very possible. If this format means Dejana or any of my future players get to play with old players of my friends' (or even my own old player!), sign me up. (73 words)

6. Who do you think should be captain of each team? Why?
Honestly, let's shake it up. We'll do co-captains. One retired legend from each team, and one current player.

From the Atlantic - let's go Jae-ik Barron as the current player (league's top scorer makes this really easy), and the past player is Bojo Biscuit. One of the best defensive players in the league's history, and its current best offensive player.

From the Central - Ron Mexico as the past player. Four time MVP speaks for itself, and an early icon of the SHL. Anthony Dionne as current player - great goalie that deserves his flowers.

Northeast - heart says Doyle as past player and Lightning as current player. But in terms of mind and logical picks...Wilson as past player, and honestly I don't hate choosing Lightning for current.

Pacific - current player, Time, he's been captain basically everywhere. Tony Pepperoni for past just because I feel like it. A couple of Edmonton Blizzard legends. (152 words)

To include more faces for the Montreal Patriotes we are advocating to also add Jussi Mutou to the line up. In a roster that has a hard time to compete in the SHL we see that Mutou still was able to score a point per game, and not only assisting, but he scored 29 goals actually, which seems quite an achievement. In order to make room for Mutou, we are removing Aaron Wilson of the Hamilton Steelhawks, mostly because we want to give our team an edge by removing one of the old legends and replacing him with a young fox on the ice, to ensure we have an advantage over the other teams. With another of our old players being a goalie, we do not have to worry that she will get tired as fast as the old skaters do, so this must give the NTH team a big competitive advantage over the other teams. I believe this is a swap that should be made from a team perspective, but i do understand that the all star committee wanted to include the legend players on ice. But it does make the tournament more of a circus with all these oldies, despite it being a big honor to form a goalie tandem together with Elizabeth Doyle.

2. Do you like the new format? Why or why not?

Far be it from me to criticize the powers that be in making this format change, but I'm personally not a huge fan of the new All-Star format.

I don't mind having this different format as a one-off event. If the intent here was to do something different to help celebrate the league's 80th season, then I'm fine with that. Shaking things up every now and then is something I would generally support. You never want to have the sense of routine creep in too much, and an occasional change helps keep users interested and motivated.

But making this new format into a permanent change is not something that I would support. I think that the All-Star game (and the same applies to both IIHF and WJC) should remain something that is exclusive. Only the very best of the best -- the stars who stand head and shoulder above the rest of the league -- should get to participate. When we have four fully-rostered All-Star teams, that means that 20% of the entire league gets to participate, and that doesn't count the fact that some percentage of players are inactive. Opening it up to so many players might be nice for the bubble players who wouldn't get selected otherwise, but it lessens the value of the honour if so many players are chosen.  I would prefer the All-Star game to remain a true best-on-best showcase of the league's top players.

7. What would be your starting lineup, 3 forwards, 2 defencemen and a goalie for one of the SMJHL conferences?

The Northern Conference is a powerhouse of J talent. Here's the best starting lineup:

C:  Cristoforo Roccamontepiano
LW: Djoe Anderson
RW: Chuck Lumbermouth
LD: Peter
RD: Rodwin Dionicio
G:  Katharina Rosenthal

This lineup isn't necessarily the highest-scoring lineup that could be put together.  But it's a great balance of top-end scoring (Roccamontepiano) and solid defensive talent (Anderson, Dionicio).
