S81 PT #0: It’s All About The Hockey Due: Sunday, February 16th @ 11:59 PM PST
#61

Rence Sykut has always found going home to Latvia as his safe space away from the glitz and glamour of life as a professional athlete. In the summer, he stays at his grandmother's house in the Latvian countryside where his parents also live. He finds it so grounding to return to his childhood activities of gardening, tending to chickens, and taking evening swims in the local water feature which happens to an old defunct Soviet era gravel pit that has filled with water over time. On the weekends, he travels to the capital, Riga, and mingles with his childhood friends and fellow Latvian National Team players as many of them also come back to Latvia in the offseason. From a hockey perspective, Rence usually only skate once or twice a week in the offseason as he like to leave hockey behind for a couple months. When the season comes closer, he finds that not having skated a lot rekindles his love for the game every fall.

With my player entering the family stage of their career, its become a balancing act of trying to find more than enough time to train at the levels one is used to but also spending enough time with the family. As a new father I find myself feeling guilty a lot of the time when I am away for long periods knowing I could just be spending time with the kid(s). What I have to remind myself is that time with their mom, grandma, aunts and uncles is just as important for them as well. I know they are having tons of fun with them and I need to focus on what pays the bills to do well at that as well. Make what time I can for them as much as possible but dont feel guilty about the time away when I know its for a good cause and I am not purposefully leaving them all the time. They are in good hands and I need to focus on that and bettering my game as well.

After the topline of the Quebec City Citadels of Roccamontepiano, Thompson Smythe and Morandi graduated to the SHL the owls are now missing a combined 117 goals and 307 points. And with McFisherman of the Kaptina line also graduation there is only one forward line for the Citadels that stayed intact. Dominic Enselmo, Levon Doijkic and Shiny Rainbow have to prove now, that they are capable of leading the team and elevating their S80 performance by atleast another 20 goals 70 points. Dojkic has already shown during the WJC, that he can be a goal per game player alongside Shiny Rainbow, but now these 3 have to function in perfection together to give Quebec another chance to defend their Cup. That's why all 3 of them will spend their offseason somewhere in the wilderness of Quebec with their own personal pond to train on. Rumors say they may be joined by a couple of coaches and visited by the former QCC Allstars for help and advice. But either way, they may only return in perfect unity and with that as the most dangerous offensive force of the entire league.

Matthias and Alexa had been training together since very early in Matthias' career - from draft day with his partner Ozzy, to jogging in Edmonton, and every day during the season and off-season, there's always been some form of training going on. Lifting weights, jogging, boxing, shooting, skating, puckhandling - and it isn't uncommon to invite up some of the younger players to take a stab at things, either - likewise for the Quebec national team, though admittedly, the American team dwarfs the size of all three aforementioned teams put together. Offseason can be a nasty and lonely time, when you're missing the camaraderie of your teammates, and Matthias doesn't have any biological family of his own - not that he knows, anyways, so staying with rookies, international teams, and whichever teammates stick around is good for him - and there are benefits to having a massive bear of a man around when you need one. Alexa is well-known to train herself and her teammates to utter exhaustion, and while her bootcamp might not be the most brutal in the league, it's one that Matthias wouldn't dare to miss.

Alexandros takes the offseason in waves with multiple training groups and usually spends much less time resting then he should. After a brief period with family he will make sure to keep up going to the gym until he’s ready to train with his first group from his Carolina days just to say hello and keep the bonds with his former team especially Lazer Gato, Westley Kickpatrick and Betzee Nickelback. Next the proper training camp begins for Chicago for which he is certain he is the harshest training camp because he is committed to training even during rest periods. He makes sure to train with everyone on the team to work with his synergy but taking extra time to work/track down his teammate and linemate sad ketchup who is surely trying to hide somewhere to be sad. Lastly, he has a new objective this season as Chicago has brought in a new linemate for himself and sad ketchup in Slava-Ukraini Heroyam-Slava, so he wants to spend extra time this offseason working on drills and building chemistry with him.

Written Option 2: Or maybe there are more important things in life.

Robo Sven has had many great acquaintances and friends throughout his life, but no one that he can really call family. Sven is married to the game of hockey, as evidenced by the fact that when he got too old to play at a high level, he literally got his entire body mechanically remade to start it all over again. Sven eats, drinks, sleeps and breathes hockey. There really is just no room in his life for other relationships outside of the locker room. Hell, he doesn't even remember most people's names, much less anything else defining about them. He's already achieved just about everything you can in the SHL and SMJHL, but the hunger and drive is still there to keep pushing. Most people can ease into retirement and find fulfillment in a peaceful sunset, but not Sven. He will keep doing this until he literally can't, and with the marvels of modern technology and medicine, who knows where the end is at this point?

Will Nuck comes from a long lineage of SHL players. He may not have a ton of relatives in the SHL but both his grandfather and great grandfather played in the league as a result of the history and money made, the family has land back home in Germany. That land is a dedicated hockey world of wonder. There is a indoor rink, a pond rink and a few of the grand kids have personal garage/basement rinks at their own houses. There is also a track and field track that doubles as a bike loop/track. They have multiple different dry land training facilities that also include a fully decked out gym. The property houses 5 pools, a rock climbing facility and a dedicated wood chopping area that fuels all 17 houses on the multi hector plot. Finding a training partner is never hard to find as the Nuck clan has participants in many high profile sports. But Will's favorite partner is his great grandfather Bubba. The two are almost inseparable from one another.

How is this even a question Barca and Salad have been friends since they were young and spend every bit of time together they can. Of course this means taking the breaks and going on trips and of course training together as well. With the recent purchase of the island by Barca they decided what better place to go and get the best of both worlds this offseason and not only take the families out there for the much needed rest and relaxation but also they set up the state of the art gym and even a half ice rink to get time on the ice and gym in to make sure they are in the best shape they can be come season start. Getting that these two are at the tail end of the prime of their careers they have decided working on conditioning and maintaining is the most important way they can stay healthy for the upcoming season. This has meant changing up the workouts they do and focusing more on health as well including the introduction of hot yoga which the boys have found a new appreciation for!

Darby Reznor has some family, but most of them live in Seattle so he doesn't get to talk to them outside of the offseason. While he never knew his father, he does have his mom who was his rock for many years. He lived with her and his half brother Simon, who could have gotten into hockey like Darby if he didn't like skateboarding more. There are also his two cousins that live close by named Sara and Kenny, along with his uncle Dominic. He was close to his grandparents on his mom's side, but only his grandpa is alive right now unfortunately.

As for his close friend group, in Seattle he had his two best friends Kendrick and Tyler. Kendrick is a locally renowned skateboarder, and Tyler is nicknamed Big Ty and got into wrestling before going to Washington University to get into college amateur wrestling. Big Ty is currently working his way through the independent professional wrestling circuit, and he and Darby hang out whenever they are in the same town together.

Lindberg is big on taking the offseason for solo training and getting his mind right. While hockey is a team sport, sometimes you need a mental reset after the long season. During the offseason Lindberg takes an off the grid self journey. This offseason he is traveling to Spain to hike the Anillo de Picos in Asturias. During this he will do some hiking and camping to get away from the every day drag of training, resting, playing, repeating. Mentally this is his reset during the offseason. After taking a couple weeks he will be back to the grind of hockey. Following the trip, he will return to team activites at the rink and continuing training with fellow draft mate Apollo Seaborne and also mentoring and welcoming rookie Holeh Guacamoleh. The rookie has been struggling to adapt to the big league training regime, but has all the tools to succeed with the help of Seaborne and Lindberg.

Marsh spends his off-season training mostly alone but also with friends from his childhood team. Not really a need to rent the rink as any break in the schedule they let Marsh on the ice. Conditioning is a big portion of his off-season but is one of the most important aspects of his development as he grows into his frame. Adding muscle and speed are the biggest goals of his off season while on ice training is used as more of a fun break away from the track and weight room.

Playing on a men's league team over the summer made up of mostly college players home for the summer does provide a relaxed challenge where he can get a bit into the competitive spirit, but again just men's league and far from playing for a cup.

As far as diet goes it's fairly strict but allows for cheats especially when he has the ability for some home cooking he doesn't get during the season.

1. Levon really does aspire to be the best, and after taking home the Four star cup for the first time, he is feeling even more motivated from off season training. He has pushed himself in all aspects, and we saw some major fruit in the WJC when he led all scorers with 12 goals! Despite the lack of wins, he really enjoyed the tournament and is hoping for a medal sometime soon. His ever present and trophy winning teammate and training buddy Dominic Enselmo just missed out on getting a bronze with Canada Black. They will both be working hard for next year, but first they got to get Quebec through the regular season without Cristoforo Roccamontepiano. Levon himself probably wouldn’t go as far as to say that it is all about hockey, he enjoys other sports and quality time with his friends, but for him it is mostly about hockey.

Being a veteran now and knowing a lots of players, it's fun to train with guys from your team but also with players from your home region.
Players like Derek Martin, Louis Bélanger, Jean Bon, Joe and Bastien Primeau, Sam Volta, Xavier Beausoleil, Paul Koivu, Leighton Oligny and obviously my brother Émile are some SMJHL and SHL players that liked to train and play against each other.
Myself and Martin are two superstars that have a lot of money so we rent a ice each week to get some ice training. We get together from time to time in a gym to push ourself and get some physical training. It's hard to be successful in the SHL so we try to push the young to give their best.
We don't stay in Québec all summer long so we can't play in a summer/beer league, but some of us play when we can and if we can replace somebody else.

In the offseason, Louis Belanger likes to meet his friend @HillsHaveHats to train. Like he mentioned in his previous story, Louis is planning on going to the UK to see Olivier and they are preparing a huge workout. They will step on the ice and do 50 circles around the ice at max speed to get very tired. Sometimes other players join in the fun and come train with them. The rink used to be free to rent, because Oliver was seen as a local legend by the community but it all changed when he announced his decision to switch for France. Rinks are super expensive now. They focus on a lot of things but mostly hitting people 2 on 1 to do a sandwich, Oliver's favorite activity. it's fun to train with Olivier and Louis always have fun with him, he hopes to come back next offseason so they train and eat peanut butter together again.

After 11 years in Los Angeles, I think Prpich would consider it his primary home. I think he'd take a little time in the offseason to go back to Norway to visit his parents and some friends. Outside of that, most of his time would be spent in LA. The point he is at in his career, the game has become a lot more serious, and he has a very professional approach. The offseason isn't really time off, in that sense. He uses the time to remain in shape, and keeping his skills from diminishing too much. I think he'd take full advantage of the team's training facilities, within the confines of whatever rules the league has in place. He'd work on his own, but be more than happy if and when other Panthers wanted to join him. Prpich also works with a personal strength and conditioning trainer, focusing on things like flexibility and mobility to avoid injury in his relatively old age, and extend his career.
