S81 SMJHL PT #2 - Rivalry Week Due: Sunday, March 2nd @ 11:59 PM PST
#46

Well, considering @Tmoney6996 has named me a rival, I name him a rival as well! As he mentioned we are a husband and wife duo here. In our other league we GM a team together and have to place nice for the good of the team. However, we are both highly competitive people so we were itching to compete against each other in a new league space this time around! Now’s the chance!

For the team rivalries, I’m on Detroit and well… We are now 30+ games into the season.. Can the whole conference be a rival since we are in last? Real talk though, a personal in-conference, but friendly rivalry for me are the Colorado Raptors. I was formerly drafted there, and love to both see them do well… and kick their butt. Colorado also beat Detroit the last time they were in the playoffs back in Season 79 so there is some historic rivalry going on from that as well.

The Colorado Raptors rival as of late is the Carolina Kraken. Colorado and Carolina have become bitter rivals due to constantly matching up in the post season in hard fought series. The most recent playoffs matchup took place in Season 79, where the Raptors beat the Kraken 4 games to 1 in the Eastern Conference Finals. The teams also squared off the season before that. In Season 78, The Raptors beat the Kraken in Game 7 to advance out of the first round. Prior to that, Carolina beat Colorado in 7 games in the second round in Season 76. In Season 75, the two teams also squared off in the second round – this time Colorado advanced in six games. In Season 72, Carolina beat Colorado in 5 games in the first round. In the past 10 seasons playoffs, Colorado and Carolina have matched up 5 times and Colorado leads the match up 3-2 in series.

I don't know who the heck the Highlander's biggest rivals are so I'm gonna say @ocho because he is my opp right now!!! I guess you could consider it personal beef. I don't technically have real beef with him but he is on a different team than me so yeah I HAVE to beef with him but in a super cool and humble sportsmanship way. He is on the Carolina Kraken. I love Kahri and so many people in there but I AM DETERMINED TO WIN. Also, Krakens are like giant squids and Highlanders are highland cows (I presume) so it's like sea versus land and LAND WILL WIN YEAH GO GRASS PUPPIES!!!!!!! I also cannot swim so I basically have to be jealous of them and envy them but in a mysterious way like super nonchalantly. I am basically a chill guy. Anyways, in general I like to think I don't actually have any personal rivals, I really like how everyone gets along. I just want everyone to have fun.

As a newer member of the Grizzlies, and the team being fairly new in general, there isn't a lot I know about a big rivalry between teams. I guess from what I've seen it would be the Scarecrows. And right now with the teams growing and trying to get better at the same time in the league. We're setting the stage for primetime matchups in the next few seasons. The Grizzlies and Scarecrows are both very young teams and both teams are looking to take a step into the limelight. For the Grizzlies it's finally being truly relevant for the first time and continued success. While it's returning to form for the Scarecrows to their long legacy of talented teams in the S30s and S40s (I am dating myself and my league knowledge here). Overall both teams will be looking to make a jump and there will likely be some bad blood if they become contenders around the same time. But it's that just the best thing about hockey and rivalries? I am looking forward to being a big part of it!

If I had to pick a rival for the Detroit Falcons, specifically this season, I would choose the St Louis Scarecrows. The main reason I'm choosing St Louis as our biggest rival is simple, but it gets deeper. Scarecrows are made to do what their name suggests, and while we aren't crows, we are still birds. With that said every time we go out to play them, we have to prove we are not intimidated by their branding. Deeper than the logos, both teams are expected to be bottom feeders this season. Being closer in the standing always increases the intensity of games. Although both teams will be competing to get higher draft picks, picking up a win or two against a team that is around their same skill level is always a great boost for any team. Although it will be tough to watch many games from either of these two teams, it should be a safe guess that at least the games between the two should be exciting.

If I had to pick our biggest Rival I'd say it's any team who constantly has a good record and we meet in the play offs. Maybe QCC. The reality is I don't care about proximity to Maine or any other details. What I care about is these teams that constantly attempt to try and stand in our way during the most important time of the year. These week in the middle of the season to gain viewers and spice up the attention is great but if you're not doing it at the end of the season and trying to end eachothers season then it's not that'll big of deal.

As for my players rivals? None. Holeh Guacamoleh Is a fun and lovable guy. There's not need to have any hate towards other people doing their job. Off the ice we can go and get a drink at the pub, but on the ice it's going to be all business.

As someone not super well versed in SHL history, I'll say that the Scarecrows current rival is the Detroit Falcons. Both teams are rebuilding, leading to them being in a fierce battle over the wooden spoon, with each team trying to not be last. St. Louis is currently 2-0 in the series, with a 4-0 win and a recent 5-2 win. However, the two play again in the near future with both games being at Detroit, so who knows if they can even up the score! While neither team has championship expectations, “not being last” is certainly a good motivator. The two teams are also fairly close to each other geographically, so it's not difficult for away fans to make the trip to support their team, perhaps leading to fights on the ice and in the stands! Hopefully as both of these young teams grow and develop, this rivalry can transform into one where both teams are fighting for the first seed.

One of the biggest rivalries for the St. Louis Scarecrows is the Detroit Falcons. They're a hard-nosed team that sometimes takes things a bit outside the rule books. Their "passionate" fanbase are just a bunch of drunken idiots looking for a fight. On top of that, they're one of the worst cities to visit and their arena looks like it's older than my grandma. Hell, it's even safer here in St. Louis than Detroit. I'm surprised their team has been foreclosed and put up for auction like everything else in Detroit. It's embarrassing to play there, I don't want my parents having to come out to watch me and I sure as hell ain't bringing any girl I care about around these parts. It's a tough rivalry, but I think given the young core we have right now, we'll pass Detroit by just like the rest of the world has following the decline and demise of the auto industry and manufacturing as a whole.

While just about every team with championship aspirations is gunning for QCC's title and might like to knock them down a peg, a rivalry needs more than that. It needs a special kind of friction, it needs a formidable opponent standing between your team and everything they hope to achieve, it needs exactly what you find in a 7-game series for the ultimate prize. At the conclusion of Round 3 of the S80 playoffs. Quebec City had just emerged victorious over the Armada in their own drawn-out series, while the Carolina Kraken seemed to be building momentum with a four game sweep of the Maine Timber. The first two games of the final round were close, as the Citadelles and Kraken traded 1-goal victories, but QCC subsequently took the lead with a 4-0 shutout and another narrow, penalty-ridden win. With a 3-1 series lead, QCC looked poised for greatness, and although history would remember this as inevitable, such moments rarely feel inevitable in their midst. Then, like their mythological namesake, the Kraken rose from the depths and caught the Citadelles off-guard with two decisive victories of their own, tying the series. Had QCC faltered, history would have laughed them off for allowing the Kraken to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. There's an old saying about Russian politics, that it's like a dogfight under a carpet; you see one dog come out after the fight is over, but you never see how close the fight was. In game 7, no matter what the numbers show and no matter what the analysts say, QCC will never forget how close the fight was.

Jean-Luc Gagnon’s rivalry with the Yukon Malamutes runs deep, tracing back to his days playing in the Yukon before being drafted by the Maine Timber. His time in Yukon was filled with intense competition, where the Malamutes tried to announce themselves as the dominant force in the league. Jean-Luc's competitive fire was kindled in these brutal matchups, and while he appreciated the team's tenacity, there was no love lost between him and his teammates at the time. He was a rising star in Yukon, but the tension between him and the Malamutes’ top players, who saw him as a threat to their ice time, only added fuel to the fire.

Now, as a Timber, Jean-Luc brings that same passion when facing his old rivals. The intensity on the ice is clear for all to see, with each game feeling like a personal grudge match. Fans from both sides feel the history every time they meet, as Jean-Luc’s return to face the Malamutes is more than just a game, it’s a reminder of the battles that defined the early stage of his career.

Even in their rebuilding state where they shouldn't be expected to take any games, there will always be games that the Scarecrows will always want to win, just for bragging rights. One such rival that the St Louis Scarecros have to contend with is the Maine Timbers. This choice in rivalry comes with deep history between the two, as the Timbers and the Scarecrows have met constantly in the playoffs, however this always comes up to St. Louis' detrement. Within the last 10 seasons of the SMJHL playoffs, St. Louis has never gotten past Maine whenever they have met in the playoffs. They are also the most recent team that we have lost to in the last playoffs we competed in. There is some deep seated bad blood from St. Louis as we see them as the wall to smash through, and given time with this young cohort that the Crows have, I would say that this day of reckoming will be arriving very soon.
