The answer, though, is we don't go looking unless we have a specific reason to. We also don't just take anonymous tips because we are well aware that there are plenty of people here who would take a petty in-league beef far enough to say "I heard X is a Nazi" just to start something. I think the kerfuffle in this thread is probably proof enough that we will bend over backwards to preserve the privacy of people making those reports and to keep them anonymous to the general public, but we in HO aren't just taking tips from an anonymous tip line to find an excuse to start stalking people.

When the concern is brought to us in good faith by a user(s) in our community, and accompanied by evidence (even if not initially enough evidence to be actionable), we take the safety of our users here seriously enough that we will look into it to find out if it IS actionable.

Thank you I truly appreciate this response. I apologize if my initial comment came off as antagonistic.i just wanted to get further clarifications on how things came about. My concern was that it could potentially lead to abuses for that reason of getting revenge for squabbles.

yeah of course, if people are asking in good faith, I will answer in good faith! But yeah, I know about as well as anybody in this thread, I think, that people will literally just make stuff up about you if they hate you enough, so if you need to report something as serious as someone being a Nazi, you have to be able to stand behind that with head office (even if we are going to later have to put ourselves in the position of having to say "we've shared this with enough people to be satisfied in our process, but we are not going to be making any more of it public").

I enjoyed reading the conversations in this thread. I think there are good conversations to be had when it comes to the privacy of users and the severity of what can be found on their private profiles. I will say i don't agree with some of the users in this thread that claim that "there's nothing to worry about if you're not a Nazi," and it's good to see that HO is taking a stance when it comes to preserving the privacy of our users.

It may not seem like it, but with this situation there is a lot of room for nuance when it comes to privacy, and it's something that has been debated since the beginning of the concept of surveillance. The "Nothing to Hide" arguments are very dangerous and i hope that people can see the problems with it both on the site and in real life. Some people DO want some semblance of privacy, and that should be fine with people.

And truly? None of us has time to do that, let alone want to. Go live your lives, I don't give that much about what you do in your private time. We just also, like, are going to make sure that a nazi is a nazi, before we ban them for being a nazi. I think anyone would appreciate us giving them that initial benefit of the doubt too.

Totally get you. It is sad to see that Nazism and fascism is growing in the west throughout countries of all kinds. I have faith that in Canada people that look like me are safe from dangerous philosophies like that.
