I would say the MVP race is coming down to the following players:

Shiny Rainbow (Quebec City)
Josie Cass (San Diego)
Ethan Cross (San Diego)

These are the three players that seem to be consistently helping their teams in scoring, either by goals or assists.

Shiny Rainbow leads the SMJHL in goals with 36 goals. He has 5 more goals than the next players. He comes in 3rd in total points at 69 (nice!).

Josie Cass is leading the J in points with 74. They have 31 Goals sitting in 3rd in the league. While getting 43 assists to be forth in the league. They also have a 85 offense game rating average on the season.

Ethan Cross sits 2nd in the league in points with 71. They are 2nd in assists with 44 and tenth in goals with 27. They boast a 63% faceoff percentage as well.

There are other candidates just on the bubble who could pull off the surprise MVP win as well.

Winning MVP is a tough task and that makes it a much coveted award. I think there are four candidates right now, and they only come from two teams, Quebec and San Diego.

Shiny Rainbow is the clear favorite in my opinion leading the league with 36 goals, five more than anyone else. But it is not all about goals, and Shiny Rainbow’s linemate, Levon Dojkic is showing that, putting up 48 assists which is about an assist per game. This sort of unselfish play is totally becoming of an MVP and it’s hard to imagine where the scoring offense of the Citadelles would be without his
prowess.

The San Diego duo of Ethan Cross and Josie Cass actually lead the league in points, so I could easily see the argument for them as well. It’s hard when there’s two players who are so clearly ahead of the rest and they’re on the same team, both QCC and SDT have that issue but I still think it will be one of these four for sure!

Which 3 players are competing to become SMJHL S81 MVP? Here are the 3 players atm who I think have the best chance of winning MVP

Ela Solberg, Goalie Citadelles Render: Doesn't have a render
Solberg has had a really great season with Quebec City.

Solberg has an ATM 92.1 save percentage and out of Solberg's 30 starts this season, has Solberg has helped the team to 25 wins, giving Solberg a win percentage of over 80% and she has been involved in 73.5% of all Quebec City's wins this season.

Solberg is one of the absolute greatest goalkeeping talents and Solberg has really shown that this season and is one of, if not the biggest reason for Quebec City's fantastic season.

Josie Cass, RW  Tidal Render: Doesn't have a render
Josie Cass is just 1 point away from matching her best season ever with 16 games remaining.

Atm Cass is on 74 points and has 31 goals and 43 assists in 50 games.

Cass has a points average of 1.48% per game and that makes Cass one of the most dangerous points in the entire league and this is what Cass has really shown this season. Goals average is 0.62% per game and assists average is 0.86% per game.

Cass is currently 1st in the points league with as many games played as 2nd place scorer Ehtan Cross who has 71 points.

Ethan Cross, Center  Tidal Render: Sydney Crosby
Ethan Cross plays for the San Diego Tidal. He has had a fantastic season and is only 3 points behind teammate Josie Cass.

Cross is having his best season in terms of points, goals and assists and has played 16 fewer games than Cross has in his previous 2 seasons in the league.

Here are the stats from Cross' previous seasons and this one.
S81:
points: 71
Goals: 27
Assist: 44
S80:
Points: 49
Goals: 24
Assist: 25
S79:
Points: 26
Goals: 4
Assist: 22

Cross has really grown and this season you can really see how much Cross has developed as a player during his almost 3 seasons in the league.

MVP is always a tough ask, and it can be even harder depending what metrics the voters value. I'll probably take a more simplistic view here on the MVP race, but it can be a good baseline for reviews moving forward:

I think the first one that comes to mind if Josie Cass. Top 3 in Goals, Assists, and Points, is leading a very a strong SDT offense.

I think Jason Bourne could be a dark horse here from pure F standpoint. Currently 5th in +- and sitting at 2nd in goals scored. To be honest, it's hard to judge anyone on NBB at the moment, because they are all so good at the moment.

Big Sweg should absolutely be in the conversation though. 1st in Dman assists, 1st in points, 2nd in +-, and the quarterback for NBBs powerful offense.

Lastly, need to throw a Goalie in there, and there's only one that fits the bill at the moment. Ella Sodberg from QCC. Currently, they sit in 1st in GAA, GSAA, Save%, Shutouts, and are 2nd in wins. They've had a dominate season in net and should be rewarded for the effort.

I absolutely do not envy the award committees responsibilities for this award this season, it’s a very close race and will truly come down to the final sims to decide a victor as there’s no clear cut choice at this time. In no particular order below are my three front runners for the award.

First up like many others have said is Josie Cass of the Tidal. Leads the league in points, T-2nd in goals, 4th in assists. Only thing I could see hindering their progress towards is having only a +10 goal differential while on the ice.

Second on the list is from QCC, this one goes to Ela Solberg. She’s been in net for 25 of her teams 34 wins posting a league leading save percentage of .921 and is in a three way tie for first place in shutouts with 4. While Shiny is a goal scoring superstar up front, Ela has been an important piece of the puzzle to prevent anyone on the opposing team from catching Shiny in goal totals.

Last but certainly not least on the list is Levon Dojkic. Based on his build this guy can do just about everything, however what’s shined this year has been his ability to pile up assists. Levon leads the league in assists, tied for 6th in points, only has 14 PIM, lays out hits, and has a nearly even TA/GA ratio. Leaves on to wonder if the offensive performance on QCC is from Shiny tucking it in the net, or Levon setting it up.

Its hard to argue against the consensus of Ethan Cross, Shiny Rainbow and Josie Cass, but the question has to be asked in an MVP conversation: are the teams as good as they are because of these players, or are these players having such successful seasons because of the depth and skill of the team around them? Indeed, favourites Cross and Cass play on the same line and are 1 & 2 for the team in scoring, however, with the team itself is hovering around .500 and those two nearly 20 points clear of the next scoring leader, their value to the team is probably greater of that than Shiny Rainbow to QCC (who have a very strong and deep lineup). With that said, I believe Ela Solberg has to be a part of the MVP conversation, and is my clear favourite to win, as they are a integral piece of the QCC machine, and is currently the league leader in SV%, GAA, GSAA, Shutouts, and 2nd in wins. You can have the deepest group of forwards and defense, but you still need a sound goalie to win games, and QCC is doing that with ease this season.

To avoid being too much of a homer, I will only allow myself to choose one MVP candidate from QCC (long may we reign), and while I will largely echo the sentiments of the other commentators, I think there is a sleeper candidate who has gone unrecognized (saved for last).

1. Ela Solberg Citadelles
Ela has gone above and beyond what was already an impressive season in S80, outdoing herself with a .921 save percentage (1st in the league), 2.47 goals against average (1st in the league), 4 shutouts (tied for 1st in the league), and a mind-blowing 25.86 goals saved above average (1st in the league by a healthy margin). Even when QCC had its rough patches early in the season, Ela was at the top of the goalie leaderboards and kept her team competitive in every game.

2. Josie Cass Tidal
Across 50 games, Josie currently leads all players in points with 74, is tied for second in goals with 31, and is fourth in assists with 43. For a team sitting firmly in the middle of the pack in league standings, the value of a player who can put up those numbers with a +10 rating cannot be overstated.

3. Ivan Ivanovitch Berserkers
The league leader in plus/minus has a +49 rating through 48 games, during which they've scored 13 goals and 33 assists for a total of 46 points. Impressive, you might say, but why do they deserve consideration over those with more goals or assists? They're putting up those numbers as a defenseman! On a team that has performed incredibly well this season, Ivan Ivanovitch has done just about everything you could ask a defenseman to do, spending considerable time on both the powerplay and penalty kill for a Berserkers team that, dare I say, is currently looking like QCC's biggest challenge in holding onto their title.

It seems there is a consensus forming around the MVP race, but there are other considerations than points and stats leadership. While these are of course important, I would like to base my list on who has truly been most valuable to their team. My MVP candidates are as follows:

Ela Solberg  Citadelles
I know this flies in the face of what I JUST said, but Solberg is the favorite for a reason. Taking a commanding lead in S% (.921), GAA (2.47) and goals saved above average (25.86) Ela Solberg has stood on her head for the Citadelles this season, and is a huge reason they are in the number 1 spot in the league.

Slava Kasyanenko  Berserkers
The Berserkers are going berserk this season, and it in large part due to their roster depth. Kasyanenko is third in scoring for Newfoundland, and as a second liner only trails the starting center by 3 points. With 28g, 33a, 61p Kasyanenko is producing at an incredible pace and making it look like the Berserkers have two first lines. If Newfoundland can get it done in the postseason, Kasyanenko should be looking at some MVP votes

Katharina Rosenthal  Berserkers
Another thing going for the Newfoundland Berserkers is their ability to create offense while not giving up goals the other way. Boasting the best goal differential in the league, one has to look at their netminder Katharina Rosenthal. Rosenthal has quietly had a season that could rival Solberg's. Rosenthal can be found in the top 10 of most goaltender categories, and leads the leagues in wins. With 26 wins, 6 losses and 2 OT losses Rosenthal gives their team confidence they need to be true contenders.

MVP awards are sometimes an easy choice, this is not the case in the SMJHL this season. There are a number of candidates that could take the honour in the final weeks. Here are my top three choices for MVP this season.

Jauhnne Hawky RW  Knights
Hawky has been one of the strongest performers on the ice this season. He is probably an underrated choice for MVP as he flies under the radar in most stats, but he has been an absolute beast for Kelowna this season. He is boasting a league leading 82 Game Rating, and sits second @ 86 Offensive Game Rating. He is over 60% at the dot and has added 44 points showing his contributions have made a difference.

note worthy stats:
GR:82 (1)
OGR:85(2)
SHG:4 (t1)

Josie Cass RW  Tidal
Currently the league leader in Points, hovering near the top 5 in both Goals and Assist. They have shown tremendous offensive talent. All but 18 of their 74 points come even strength which means they are driving the play most of the time and not just getting points when the team is on the man advantage. They are also boasting a top 5 85 OGR.

note worthy stats:
G:36 (3)
A: 44 (t5)
P: 80 (1)
S: 201(7)

Ela Solberg G  Citadelles
Stats don't lie. This goalkeeper has been the cream of the crop and is, in my opinion, the only reason QCC is anywhere near the top of the table. Ela can steal any game and is tops in the league in almost every goalkeeper category that matters. They have a 28.6 Goals saved above average!!! That number is absolutely foolish.

note worthy stats:
26 W (2)
2.5 GAA (1)
.922 SV% (1)
4 Shutouts (1)
28.4% GSAA (1 by a country mile)

This season has been the host of some great storylines, unexpected players stepping up, and the introduction of a HUGE SMJHL entry draft. Throughout the chaos, there has been some lots of fantastic players who have really proven to be one step up on the rest of us, but a few come to mind in particular

In no order whatsoever:

Hotdog Lunch  Highlanders
Render: “Phil Kessel wearing a 13 gallon hat”
Hotdog Lunch has really stepped up for the Highlanders in a way that's allowed him to lead the team to the position they are in. The Highlanders are 32-17-3, with 16 points (1st in the Southern Conference) at the time of this PT. Individually, Hotdog Lunch has 36 goals (T2nd in the SMJHL), 74 Points (3rd in the SMJHL), and a whopping 257 shots (1st in the SMJHL), 50 more than 2nd place!

Shiny Rainbow  Citadelles
Render: “Rainbow Dash as a Unicorn (pink horn) instead of a Pegasus.”
Shiny Rainbow is an exceptional goal scorer who has guided the Quebec city Citadels to yet another dominating regular season. The Citadels are 37-15-3, with 77 points (1st in the Northern Conference) at the time of this PT, Individually, Shiny Rainbow has 40 goals (1st in the SMJHL), 75 points (2nd in the SMJHL), a shot percent of 23.67% (2nd in the SMJHL) and 17 PPG (1st in the SMJHL), 4 more than 2nd place

Josie Cass  Tidal
Render: N/A
Josie Cass is your perfect all-around player, excelling in almost every aspect of the game. Josie Cass remains one of the best players in the SMJHL despite the Tidals struggles. The Tidal are 28-23-2, with 58 points on the season (4th in the southern conference) at the time of this PT. Josie Cass has 80 points (1st in the SMJHL), 36 goals (T2nd in the SMJHL), and 44 assists (6th in the SMJHL)

Dark horses:

Hamper Linthome (NFL) 68 points (T6th), 46 assists (T2nd)

Ethan Cross (SDT) 74 points (T3rd), 45 assists (4th)

Mel Guolla (KEL) 68 points (T6th), 32 goals (5th)

Ela Solberg (QCC) 2.50 GAA (1st), 0.922 Save% (1st)

Now when it comes to the MVP discussion I have a few names in mind.

First of all, going the obvious route you have the current points leader in the league, Ottawa's Josie Cass. I cannot lie I am impressed the Highlanders being this young in the league had it in them to get a player to MVP contention level, but Josie has been very impressive. 80 points puts them top by five points and the Cass-Cross combo with Ethan Cross has been the determining factor in a very impressive Ottawa regular season thus far.

Next, Shiny Rainbow from the Quebec City Citadelles. Not so much to say because Quebec is always good and always has an MVP level player, but can't argue with a league leading 40 goals and being as of now the point getting runner up to Cass.

Finally, and my pick for MVP, Ella Solberg. Retconning what I said about Quebec players doing well not being impressive, Solberg has been absolutely ridiculous this season, Ella has over twice the second place goalie's GSAA this season and a save percentage of .922%, which with the second place goalie being at a .906% is just hilariously good. Gotta hand it to Ella here if she finishes the season even remotely well she should be an easy winner. (219 words)

The MVP race is coming down to the wire, and the playoffs are going to be full of fun.

Speaking of which, these are my leaders for MVP:

1) Shiny Rainbow - The Citadelles are currently the best team in the SMJHL, with a record of 37-15. Shiny Rainbow has 5% of their goals, with 40 goals on the season, along with 35 assists. He's averaging 1.36 goal contributions per game, making his impact immense on the ice. The Citadelles' chemistry is top tier, and their offense have shown enormous firepower they possess at any given moment.

2) Hotdog Lunch - The Ottawa Highlanders have always had a fantastic season, but this will hit different compared to the rest of the seasons, as Hotdog Lunch has shown his worth to be a credible candidate for MVP, leading the league in shots per game. He has 44 more shots than anyone else in the SMJHL. He currently has 36 goals and 38 assists, with 21 +/- on the year. His impact have skyrisen the Highlanders to new heights, giving them a new sense of belief in this stacked conference.

3) Josie Cass - The San Diego Tidal have found their main man in Josie Cass, leading the league in points. He has 36 goals and 44 assists in 53 games, leading the league in goal contributions. The Tidal have had a solid season, and their offense has proved massively. He will be in the running along with these other candidates, and his impact will be telling point of this story.

There are plenty of great players this season! Here are my top 3 I would consider for MVP.

Ela Solberg  Citadelles - G

There is a lot happening in Quebec this season. They were destined to be a league leader this season, but their performance has excelled in all corners of the ice. Would they be performing just as well without their outstanding performance in net? Ela has is leading the league in goals saved above average with 28.64, a huge lead over the next goalie who sits at 13.20. In addition to their League leading GSAA, they are also leading in save percentage with a fantastic 0.922% while also holding the league lead in shutouts at 4 with 2 other goalies. Ela makes a great case for an MVP candidate this season.

Shiny Rainbow  Citadelles - F
Now sticking with QCC, Ela's teammate Shiny Rainbow has been unstoppable this season. They currently lead the league in goals with 40 and sit 2nd in points with 75. You need goals to win games and Shiny is doing exactly that. 7 of those goals are game winning goals, they are also the power play force leading with 17 powerplay goals. They don't have much of a defensive appeal, but they are leaving that up to the rest of the team.

Slava Kasyanenko  Berserkers - F
Finally I stepped out a bit and have Slava on my list. Slava is doing it all here in Newfoundland. 64 points, just outside the league leading top ten. They have a fantastic GA?TA ratio at 50/60 and have been dominating the faceoff circle with a 64.2% win percentage.

There are many others who can contend for this, and I think the J Awards committee will have a tough decision to make. For sure there will be many players in the nominations short list!
